  1. Hello people~ I need help to understand the residence calculator on DHA website. Very confused. It says before applying for Citizenship, you must have lived in Australia lawfully for 4 years, including 1 year as a permanent resident. And you cannot have been outside Australia for 12 months total, during the past 4 years. So I did enter my dates in the calculator as seen below. Permanent Residence Date: 31/08/2019 Lawful Residence Date: 07/02/2016 Intended Lodgement Date: 11/09/2020 and the absence dates: From Date: 05 Jun 2016 To Date: 02 Feb 2017 From Date: 30 Apr 2017 To Date: 01 Aug 2017 From Date: 01 Oct 2018 To Date: 23 Dec 2018 From Date: 03 Dec 2019 To Date: 20 Jan 2020 Now the calculator says yes I can apply for Citizenship but we can clearly see that I've been out for 17 months...it doesn't make sense. Also..should I count from the first visa I got in Australia? which was in 2008. or the first visa i got 4 years before the citizenship application. Any help or clarification would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
  2. The deadline for appointing a registered tax agent and securing an extension of the 31st October 2023 for filing your personal 2023 Australian tax return is now only 5 weeks away. If you want more time to prepare and submit your 2023 Australian tax return you should be on a registered tax agent's lodgment program by the end of October 2023. Doing this can also push back the due date for paying any tax owing to the Australian Taxation Office - so if you have untaxed income from a source such as a positively geared rental property or a capital gain from the disposal of a property or shares you are likely to benefit from appointing a registered tax agent. https://www.ato.gov.au/.../How-to-lodge-your-tax-return/...
  3. Hi all, I am a School Direct SCITT trained teacher with 8 years experience in the UK. I am relocating to Sydney in December. While my training university does not provide a transcript and certificate, they have written two letter. One titles “transcript” and details of the course and another explaining the course, my pass and 120 days supervised teaching. Does anybody know whether this might be accepted by AITSL without a formal certificate? Many thanks.
  4. Hi, Does anyone have any recommendations for a financial advisor/planner who they have personally used when working out their move to Oz? We have property in the UK and looking for some advice on how to navigate a move and best ways to mitigate financial loss etc. Lots of confusing info out there! Any help would be hugely appreciated Thank you
  5. Ok... here's a strange question that might be easy to answer, but I cant find the answer online anywhere. I'm going back to Scotland at the end of August. I've got a full UK Car licence, and had passed my CBT for motorbikes but left for Australia before actually sitting my test. In Australia, i got my bike licence, unrestricted, and have been riding big bikes for over 5 years... Now, i know i can convert an australian licence to a UK licence, but i already have a uk licence. I just need my Motorbike entitlement added to my UK licence, so i can get insurance when i buy a bike when i get back home. Is that possible? is it just a form? im guessing ill have to take a trip to the local DVLA office, no big deal, kjust thought id ask here in case someones been through the same process at all?
  6. My partner and I are at that critical decision stage in our process. The housing market is booming so we want to sell. SA have sponsored my partner as a registered nurse. We are still waiting on AHPRA to grant the registration, so that we can apply for jobs that will support an application for a travel exemption. Visa granted October 2020 and the clock is ticking on activating it. Does anyone have any advice or experiences that they can share regarding the supporting evidence required in order to get the travel exemption over the line?
  7. Hi All, I have applied for my 187 RSMS application in May 2016 when i was on bridging visa A and because of that i was granted a BVC with Nil conditions. In December 2018 my nomination and visa was refused that business doesn't need a manager. we appealed to AAT and i was given same BVC with NIL conditions and yesterday we have lost the appeal and now going for FCC and will have to apply for another BVC. My question is about working rights. Will it come with same working rights as my previous BVC ? or do i need to apply for work rights separately? i am asking all this because i need to make arrangements at my work place by giving them enough notice if i am going to loose my work rights for some time. Incase i need to apply for work rights by showing financial hardship, do i need to mention about my de facto partner name as my family who is on a student visa and not capable to supporting me or should i not mention about her, Is she my family in Australia?? Please please please help me by answering these couple of questions about my working rights when applying for a new BVC for my FCC for 187 RSMS application. thank you
  8. Hi guys, I am currently living in Australia on a bridging visa A, with my immediate family who are Australian residents. Long story short : My parents and 3 little brothers moved here 7 years ago whilst I was at university and due to me being classed as independent (I was 23) I was removed from their visa (skilled work). I then applied for a remaining relative visa (onshore) to which gave me a 50 year wait time for my visa (with no working rights as I entered Australia on a holiday visa). I am now 27, and have found a partner (Australian citizen). We tick a lot of the boxes required to apply for a partner visa, however we recently approached a few visa agents regarding the application. We have had two responses, one said yes all good we can apply. The other said, due to my current application and bridging visa, I won’t be able to apply. I contacted immigration and the woman I spoke to pretty much read off the website and couldn’t answer the simplest of questions (she suggested I contact a visa agent ) I’m just looking for someone who might have been in a similar situation, or someone who has experience in this field. Apologies if I’ve not included enough info for you guys to advise me! Thanks in advance! Jack
  9. hello i'm planning on moving back 'home' after 20 years living in england with my UK husband and half mancunian/half australian 4 year old daughter! i'm not moving back to perth where i'm from - hoping to go to sydney or melbourne. we're finding it a pretty daunting prospect - and that's with me knowing the country fairly well, so I do empathise with all the other expats moving to a new place. i just wondered whether anyone knew of a forum for expats returning to australia at all - or if anyone is in the same position to me. what i'm most worried about is settling in to australian society. australia has changed massively since i last lived there and i really have no idea what its like to live there now. i worry that i will be in a limbo - not really being australian or english anymore. anyone gone through the same doubting process? cheers
  10. We applied for citizenship from Australia in 2019, but had to head back to the Uk temporarily ... as we were planning to move back to Australia andsit the test, COVID meant our citizenship tests got delayed to later in 2020 and then ultimately got put on hold. We have applied for and paid for the process but we haven’t heard anything since. Without any success I’ve been trying to establish if we can sit our citizenship test remotely in a consulate in the UK. Has anyone heard of any instances of this happening at all? or can you offer any advice/ facts? thanks
  11. Hi, I have applied for Australian citizenship and met all the criteria. However, after applying, I had to move back to the UK for family reasons so no longer have an address in Australia. I received the citizenship test notification just now and will fly back to Australia to sit the test. My two questions: 1. Does moving back to the UK before the citizenship test effect my application at all? 2. Do I need to update my application to show my UK address? Thanks in advance!
  12. Could someone share the PROCESS and LISTof documents required for OVERSEAS CITIZEN of INDIA OCI for AUSTRALIAN Citizenship ( of Indian origin by BIRTH). Do we need PCC from any country for this. Also share details of Passport surrender and renunciation of Indian citizenship
  13. So following a horrific phone call back in March regarding my mum's health I was granted exemption to leave Oz to return to the UK. Thank goodness she is recovering and I am currently living with her and supporting her in that journey. I however left behind my job (who have so kindly let me continue working remotely), my partner and my home. I was granted my 820 visa a couple of days before leaving the country also. My question is, as my mum continues to recover i'm beginning to think about my return to Oz. I always knew it would be incredibly hard but I wonder if anyone has managed it and how hard it was? From what I gather as an 820 holder I don't need exemption to get back in it's just getting flights that's the impossible part? Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated.
  14. Hello all, New to this forum and hoping you can help me with my endeavours! I am a practicing doctor in the UK, and have the ambition to move abroad to Australia to practice there, and hopefully specialise at some point also. I have experience in emergency medicine, general medicine and general surgery, and have preferences to work in emergency medicine and/or medicine. I would hope to start work in Australia from March 2022 onwards, and was just hoping for a summary of information of how it works, and when is the best time to apply for my desired start date... Thank you for any help! Rikki
  15. Hey guys, hope everyone is well and to anyone affected by Covid our thoughts are with you all. I used to be a member of this site back in 2010 ish, we moved to Oz in 2014 and not needed to log in until now. I have since completely forgot my login details so I created a new account. This was BY FAR the best resource tool for us when we was going through the stages back in 2009 when we began our search down the rabbit hole. We now have a podcast here in Perth, WA called Expats 'n' Cork Hats. We are on iTunes, Spotify, Google podcasts and all the others too. If you want to be a guest on our show we would REALLY LOVE to have you on to discuss everything about your journey. You may be here in Oz wanting to go home, or you may be still in the UK thinking about coming here... Whatever your circumstances we would love to talk to you. We have done a few recordings now via Skype, it keeps it personal and intimate. We don't show the video, we just use it for the audio so don't worry, no one will see you. So, if you want to share your story to help or inspire others, please get in touch. Mark Rogers (One half of Expats 'n' Cork Hats).
  16. Many of us have left our original country of birth, or even moved between many countries over the course of our lives. Moving to a new country is an incredibly big jump of faith into the unknown. Having to learn a new language, meet new people and create new relationships, none of which is easy and can make you feel isolated. Yet, many of us, myself included, make the jump to move to a new country and take the chance. I would love to know, and am sure many other too, what some of the reasons are why you made the decision to move to Australia, which benefits outweighed those of living in the country you left. Thankyou
  17. Hi there, My family and I will be aiming to move back to the UK around April this year, after 12 years in Sydney. Can anyone offer their experience on finding a job in London or the South of England, from Australia? What is the likelihood of securing a job before departing? I work in SaaS as a Service Delivery Manager but have had a variety of roles in customer service and contact centre management. Also, has anyone moved back during Covid and could offer experience on the job market activity within IT / customer service & finance? Many thanks, Paul

Hi everyone! Im Emma! im looking to return back to Oz next year (Jan 2021) i am a former PR of Australia as my family returned in 2008 after 6 months of being there. I am 19 turning 20 now. I’ll be 20 by the time i go. Im finishing my equivalent to the tertiary qualification at college. I have had internships and then will look for job in marketing (what i study) here after summer. When do you suggest lodging my application if i want to go in January? Considering I don’t meet residency requirements?. Also when it says “personal ties - you have an intention to reside in Australia” what does that entail? I want to live there but im not sure how to support evidence. However my profession is on the skilled lists and i have reasons of how it’ll be beneficial to Australia - should i look for a job before I lodge my application considering that the processing times vary? And i have a reason for absence. Does anyone have any idea when roughly I should submit my application? Thanks guys! Stay well!
