1. Cannot help you on the visa issue but maybe an older persons aspect on the ten years thing. Ten years is a long time when people are in their seventies and anything can happen, so maybe just go with the flow let them come and live and worry about it when and if it happens with the medicals. My oh is 70 this year and he says every day will be bonus, live life now.
2. Chorizo sausages or any of the South African, German type only ones I like. Bacon must admit I hated the raw stuff in the UK last year. Chocolate does not have as much sugar as we are more healthy  You get used to it.
3. There is a lot of applicants for every rental so one cannot be sure that the rental will be yours. I have read on this forum that a lot of Brits pay six months up front to secure the rental. Some good property people barter the rent. You say you know where you want to live so look at the real estate sites and see what is around. You may or may not be able to find what you are looking for in a month. Depends on the market really. Good luck
4. Because Melbourne is such a huge area I do not believe a large map would help you. Its over hundred kilometres from where I live to the airport for instance. So if you worked at Frankston Hospital you would not be living in Geelong or the western suburbs like Point Cook, unless you wanted to spend a lot of time and money commuting. Monash Medical Centre is in Clayton, The Alfred is in Prahran, Royal Melbourne in North Melbourne, Childrens in North Melbourne, Repat is in Heidelberg near Latrobe University. Geelong has a hospital as Geelong is a city itself and my friend's son spent time there whilst training and he says its a good place to work. You can look at the Metlink Site Home - Metlink - Your guide to public transport in Melbourne and Victoria this give all the transport in Melbourne and follow the routes out and check them out on realestate.com.au. It comes down to hills, flat lands, beach really so once you decide where you would like to be easier to find areas. The universities are all over the place and Deacon has a Geelong Campus but of course each university has different courses. Ballarat is a regional town cold in winter and up in the western hills old mining area, large place has a university. Bendigo is the regional town I prefer as both my children lived there doing post grad and they both loved it. Good luck.
5. We had to get a full copy of my brother's birth certificate and he has the full works on his. My parents had an extract of birth. Australia has the same thing you get an extract and have to pay for a full one.
6. Some years ago I had to get a copy of my brother's birth certificate from Zimbabwe and there were sanctions in place so had to go through a US Bank to pay for it. I actually wrote to Zimbabwe and asked what I had to do and they were helpful and we got the birth certificate. I imagine police clearance would be similar, I know its chaos there but there are some people beavering away in gov departments thank goodness. Here is how you do it http://zimbabwe-embassy.us/subpage7.html
7. It is good having a separate forum for the States as posts tend to get lost quite quickly on the main forum. This way people will find it easier to get back to their questions and find information. So Victorians and Victorians to be give us your pearls of wisdom.:wubclub:
8. Yes you will have to take out citizenship, I arrived in 68 the first time and took our citizenship in 78 before my children were born. I have a friend who is scots and left Scotland at 19 and he is still on a Brit passport his wife is a Kiwi and she is still a kiwi. Have to do the commitment thing. However as has been said we could vote. Not sure that it would affect your job as you are able to vote but is something to sort if you ever want a passport.
9. Unfortunately body corporates are only as good as the unit owners who live in them. Here in Victoria some work well for a while then owners pass on and others rent them out and things change very rapidly from a happy community to a not so happy community. I have had a lot to do with them when I worked and would I live in Strata, no way. Strata Titles Act is a good act but I say again if there are problems then the body corporate has to sue and everyone has to pay and sometimes people just do not have the money.
10. The only smallish villages on the Peninsula are on the Westernport side and tend to be further from the city although there is a train that goes to Bittern. Balnarring is the nearest village similar to what you describe and it has a lovely primary school which is very involved in the wetlands around there and very popular. However if your husband is to work in Melbourne would be too far to travel in my opinion. Melbourne tends to sprawl and suburbs run into one another, Mornington and Mount Martha run into one another and its acres and acres of housing so not the village feel to it. The beach side of the Nepean Highway tends to be older and more established so closer to the beaches and more of a cosy feel to it. I suggest you check out google and have a look around the area and streets to give you an idea. Mount Eliza is a nice Village which is closer in and people do commute to the city from there.
11. Private Schools Woodleigh very well thought of Peninsula Toorak Balcombe Grammar Church related Padua Catholic high school St Johns in Frankston catholic high school Flinders Christian Collegem Tyabb and Carrum prmary and high Bayside Christian School not sure if primary but high State Elizabeth Murdoch - Langwarrin high school Karingal high school Frankston Mount Erin high school Frankston Frankston High School Mount Eliza High Mornington High Westernport Secondary Hastings Somerville Secondary Somerville Primary there are many many state and catholic primary schools. If children are academic and intend to go to university then private probably lean more to these pursuits, if children are not academic the state system provides two streams, academic and vocationary which leads into apprenticeships etc. I sent mine to private school have friends who sent their children to state and all have turned out fine and in fact the state ones may have done a little better as if they are bright they get on at uni better as they are not spoon fed like the private schools tend to do. Really depends on the child and do we not all have geniuses. Sad but just being clever does not make for success, nouse comes into it.
12.
Hello Olly all is well

13. As someone who has suffered a major case of depression, do not give up, the tablets you are on will take a good couple of months to help, also if these tablets do not help there are many different ones, everyone is different. I tried about six types before finding one that suited me. Also from my experience with sri's all of us are different and I am very sensitive to their effects so its necessary for me to start on a very very small dose and gradually build up over weeks to get the full effect. I hope that you feel better soon.
14. We can waste our lives wishing we were somewhere else, wishing for yesterday, what we should be doing is living every day of our lives, we are like ants something can stand on us and take our lives away in an instant and as far as I know I only have one life. If those of us who are homesick and wish to be somewhere else were to write down every time we felt miserable and wished for "what was" putting down the time we spent, I think we would find we are losing a good part of our precious lives. No-one should forget the place they were brought up and I have wonderful memories of my childhood in UK but I cannot turn back the clock.
15. I feel for all of you that are homesick and its usually the females not the males or maybe they do not allow themselves time to be homesick. Having been a child migrant and pulled here and there by parents I do not agree that it does not affect the children and that it is easy for us to adapt, going to new country and new schools is quite hard to do. Unless you have experienced it as a child how would you know. I believe that whoever earns the most and can give the best life for a family is the decider. Just like post natal depression, get out of the house go and do something, if you work go out after work etc, busy hands.
16. I think Mornington Secondary is fine and know lots of children who are now adults who went there and they are all doing very well for themselves. Mount Eliza and Mornington are both nice suburbs, I probably prefer Mornington as Mount Eliza shops are a little disjointed in that they are all over the place whereas Morningtons are more like a town. The gov high schools have a lot of students and not all of them take the VCE route a lot do VCAL so that they can do a trade occupation. They are all ok on the Peninsula. A lot of the schools have Facebook groups so if you belong have a read of the groups pages and get the drift of what the students are like. Its all about getting children into work and succeeding at that rather than looking at whether they are going to university or not. Westernport secondary college achieved the highest results in getting school leavers into work and that is a terrific achievement. I sent my children to private school but if I had my time over I would not bother I believe they would have turned out just the same and if I am really honest I was more worried about bullying than what they were going to learn
17.
Hope that you are settling well in Karingal. Good cheap shopping at the centre there. Susan

18. Some young ones are terrible everywhere not not all I live in Somerville and cannot say that all the young here are well behaved, the graffiti around at the moment is awful and I wish they would catch them. Hastings probably will get more expensive, actually the people who bought before the boom are the ones who are reaping the benefit in Hastings. Its very attractive to older people as its flat and has the train and everything they need. Unfortunately if you need a doctor in Hastings you cannot get on a list you have to travel to another suburb to see one. The port is not going to be completed until 2030 so its a way to go and a long long term investment I believe. I prefer to live up the top of the Peninsula as its not so far to go to other places in Melbourne.
19. Agree with Olly and its a nicer climate, you would not think it would be but it is just ask around if you get down there, the locals will tell you. Sefton Grange is way overpriced in my view as is most of Mount Martha on the non beach side of the Nepean Highway. I call them the real estate agents selling dreams of grandeur. Sefton Grange would have been much better divided into acreage blocks but of course it costs the same to develop a large block as a small block and can sell more smaller ones. People I know now are frightened to buy on small blocks as they are worried about being shaded by McMansions and this is a real problem. I would absolutely hate to have a double story overlooking me.
20. Rosebud, Tootgarook, Rye, Blairgowrie, Sorrento, Portsea are towards the end of the Peninsula and popular with retirees and people with holiday homes. Rosebud has attracted a lot of younger people too in recent years although its predominantly people who are retired. Its quite a commute from these areas to the city however it would be okay to live there and work say in the Berwick Cranbourne, Frankston Dandenong areas. There is no train line, and the nearest large public hospital is in Frankston which would be 40- 50 minutes away. It has a resonable shopping centre. For work I guess plumbers would work for themselves as their is no industry as such down there. There is not a lot of new housing being built in the area either. Its warmer to live there than McCrae, Dromana, Mount Martha as the suburbs to the south are protected by Arthurs Seas the hill behind Rosebud and it has a mild climate. There is a freeway to Rosebud part of the way from Frankston. There are many plumbers on the Peninsula now working for themselves and a lot also contract to the large home builders. Living on the Peninsula is very nice we have done so for over twenty years and we love it.
21. I used to go to Deen from Hairmoves for a long time when he was at another salon in Frankston and he is a good cutter.
22. Great news about national registration now we just have to get the schools, and other professions to fall in line. One thing I think is so silly with our population size is that State by State is so different. Certainly makes it hard for people to move around.
