Hello All, I have a 3 year old that’s about to start school in Oz next year. We are planning to move back to UK in a few years, when she is 7 or 8. I mentioned to my mum the booklist of things I needed to buy for my daughter going into kindy next year ( specific pen, glue, scissors, etc that the school requires us to buy) and she said that when we went to school in England when we were little, she didn’t have to buy any of that for us, that it was all provided by the school. Is that still the case? Reason I ask is many public primary schools in Oz now-a-days require parents to purchase their child an iPad come year 4 ( which my school is saying will be around $1100) and want to know for budgeting reasons is this the case in Scotland? Or are computer rooms still a thing? What schooling associated costs should I be aware of for primary and secondary school in Scotland? (Looking at government schools only) Thank you!

I moved here with my husband and 2 girls aged 10 and 12 in October last year after 3 years of stress and heartache. Now my worst fears have happenend, they love it quite understandably as they are in fantastic schools and my husband has a job he enjoys on a lot less hours than in the uk - but I am feeling so badly homesick I cannot even think about the future here. My most overwhelming feeling is guilt, the kids were in good schools in England and we had family around us especially my mum who devoted herself to us all. I have a terrible fear that if I decided I couln't cope anymore and dragged us all back, I would end up without a decent school for the girls as the competition for places is so fierce. It took my youngest daughter a long time to settle here as she is very anxious and shy and due to her age, she would have be thrown into a scary high school after being nurtured in a small caring primary school which she now loves. I spend every day in tears feeling lonely and worrying about what I have done and wondering if I should just learn to live with the pain I have created rather than run the risk of ruining their lives. We have skype and free calls to Uk, I do have some good friends here too but the ache in my heart wont go away. Australia is an amazing place I want to be happy here but my heart won't let me.

Hi, We are a (French) family landing in Brisbane in 2 weeks with a 175 visa. Our 2 oldest children are being enrolled at Indooroopilly State High School but we need to find a primary school for our last son. We heard about 2 primaty schools in Indooroopilly area : Ironside State School and Indooroopilly State School. Does anybody have any advice for one of these 2 schools? BTW, if a family is arriving in Brisbane for Christmas with a 175 visa, it could be nice to get in touch! Thanks. HenryJones

Hello everyone Please can someone help me with my Skills Assessment applicaton to AITSL. I am a secondary teacher with 3 years experience, I completed my PGCE with a University alongside doing a SCITT with a teacher training organisation at the same time. It was a joint course where the university and the teacher training organisation worked together. I completed my PGCE which consisted of three modules each worth 20 credits and my supervised teaching practice (45 days plus) at a secondary school was completed through the SCITT. I am worried I will not be accepted by the AITSL as my 45 days + surpervised teaching practice was not completed wthin the PGCE but within the SCITT. After checking the AITLS website it says that they require a transcript from the University outlining my supervised teaching practice. I have this from the Teacher Training Organisation who ran my SCITT but not the University who provided the PGCE as they wont provide me with one. Has anyone had any experience of completing their skills assessment witihin the same circumstances or have any advice they can give me? Thanks

Hello Everyone, Every exited to have received our visas and looking forward to call Adelaide our new home and meet new people. I know these queries would have been addressed here before many times. But i am still unclear after a lot of digging. But any additional advises on the below queries will help me greatly to clear my doubt clouds. I am planning to move with my 5 year old son in August 2020 from Dubai. At the moment just us as my husband will stay back, so he can finance us till i get a job and settle. So i am all the more nervous but thats the safer option. My queries:- Q 1- my son turned 5 yrs old this October 2019 and is currently in third term of his KG 1 here. looks like we have to break his schooling here. the SA education website says this -- If your child turns 5 on or after 1 May, they can start primary school (reception) the first day of term 1 of the following year. Which means my son can join primary school only in january 2020 rite ?? plz correct me if i am wrong. My question is does schools in south australia take kids in between their term. ? Because he will have to do a full reception again from jan 2021 till dec. and he will complete 6 yrs by then. Also can a kid join grade 1 straight if they reach the age criteria. Even if their preschool is incomplete from the place where they are coming ? Q 2- I am confused whether I should get our stuffs like kitchen utensils , tv , music system, books and few personal items collected over period of time. No furniture's or heavy home appliances though. Is it worth shipping them or should I just sell them and buy everything from scratch. Which is a big pain in the **s and also expensive I guess compared to Dubai. Q 3 - I have read in many places that getting the first house is a big deal. bcz many landlords dont give without job or fund proof. in our case my husband will still be working in dubai. So is that proof enough. his bank statements, Our dubai home electricity bills or tenancy papers. Will that help ??? Finally anyone here who have migrated from Dubai or planning to mig soon..!!? Hi, We are looking to move to Oz from the UK next year, but have no real idea of schools. We were wondering if anyone has any suggestions or recommendations. We are ideally looking at a secondary school with smaller classes, good pastoral care and a strong awareness of special educational needs. Both our kids have dyspraxia and slow processing, one has mild dyslexia, the other dyscalculia. They score very highly on cognitive tests, though. The state we end up in largely depends on which job I get, but probably one of Qld/SA/ACT. Visas are no problem, since the kids are Australian citizens through me (their Mum). Any suggestions/recommendations would be gratefully received! Thanks, Clare

Hi I'm sure these must have been answered in various threads so apologies if so - looking for advice - we are looking to move to Mornington/ Mount Martha in January of next year. Currently our children (an August born boy - age 5 when we move - and February born girl - soon to be 7 when we move) are in primary school in the UK (a state OFSTED outstanding school). I have a couple of questions: 1. year groups of the children when they move (our son is very young in his year group - which is currently reception year - being only 2 weeks in the threshold of the year group). 2. schools that are recommended in the areas mentioned above 3. how to we go about registering them - do we need to have an address in the area first/ how have others gone about doing this logistically in terms of move/ registering/ timings etc 4. how long does the registration process take - and is there a chance they may not get in to a school at all (or end up in a school we don't feel is suitable)? We'd be super grateful if anyone who has been through this process recently with similar aged children could offer tips/ process information/ contacts that we should be in touch with? Hi Guys, Well by God's grace things seem to be progressing well and hopefully if we clear our Health Check then we seem to inch closer in acquiring a 489 Visa and considering it would take 5 to 6 months i.e. May - June we should have our visa in our hand. If things go as per plan then we intend doing our landing in Sept - Oct 2018 but I have many queries on how to go about it? We are a family of 4 (2 children aged 9 and 4) which suburb in Adelaide do we decide to live in and what should be the criteria while choosing a suburb ? (close proximity to the city, schools, public transport etc) considering that there wont be any income when we reach, what is the monthly outgoing should we expect? We plan to rent 2 bedroom apartment / house. can my children get admissions in a government school? ( i know it wont be free as I am on a 489 visa) and what would the fee structure be like? (Grade 6 and Grade 1) what is the best way to scout for jobs? appreciate if anyone can share a template of CV's that are normally followed. are rental properties normally furnished or unfurnished? can we get a short term rental where we can be flexible to move out once we decide on the suburb we want to live in? I would also appreciate any additional info that you think can be useful, like from your own experiences, lessons learnt, do's and don'ts etc. Thank you. KPG

Hi all, My family and I are moving over to Sydney at the end of November. I'm having a massive panic about schools and which year my son will be enrolled in. My 7 year old's DOB is 21.07.10. He started school in the UK when he was 4 years old in 2014. He's one of the youngest in his year and gets on fine. He's currently in Year 3 in the UK and I'm being told if he starts in Oz at the beginning of the year (2018) he'd start in Year 2. Which means, if we catch the end of this school year (which I'd like to because he might make a couple of friends before the school break up over Xmas) he'd actually enter Year 1 which sounds like a huge step backwards for him in terms of where he'll be at academically compared to the other children. Has anyone else had similar worries and how have you addressed them? Someone said that if he is finding it too easy then he would be moved up a year. Can anyone clarify any of this for me please? Hi all, We are lucky enough to have our 189 VISA granted and are planning on moving over to Perth December/January in time for the new school year to begin in February. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice or experience trying to get a school place sorted for a little one before moving to the other side of the world!? We are fairly certain on the area we want to settle as it is close to family and friends, but that still depends on available rentals etc. I am presuming we have to try to get something sorted before the schools break up in December but am really unsure how to go about this and would love some advice from anyone who has been in a similar situation. Hi all PomsInOz, We are moving fairly soon to the Bunbury area and are looking at schools in the area. Kids are 4, 6 and 9 and to be honest I don't even know where to start. Help! Happy to fee-pay if that means better education. My 9 year old is introvert and likes his maths, my 6 year old is pretty good at reading and writing, would like to be an 'author' and write bout science, that tells you enough, and my 4 year old hasn't gone to school yet but loves scribbeling and singing and drawing.... Any good advice is welcome. AlandEs

Hi All I have been offered a 12 month stint working back in the UK and I am thinking of taking it up but my 14yr old daughter is in Year 9 at school here in Sydney. I have a number of questions which hopefully someone can shed some light. Does anyone know what the impact a move to the UK will be on her HSC preparation? I would send her to school in the UK and from memory as she turns 15 this Oct so she would start 4th year of comprehensive school, which is year 10, I believe. Does the UK follow the same program of work as here especially for Maths and English so that she would not miss out on too much? Also what if the contract is extended for a further 12 months (that has not been discussed) how would that affect her HSC prep? Would she be able to take her GCSEs instead and would these count towards a University place here in Aus? TIA John

I would love to get in contact with a secondary school teacher to discuss the kind of things I should include in my cover letter when applying for my first post in Australia. There is plenty of educational lingo in the UK and a number of key areas which you are expected to touch on in an application, any advice on how to construct my application to provide an area coordinator/head teacher with what they are looking for would be greatly appreciated. To all parents in Northern parts of Perth WA, I would like feedback from anyone who is interested in a curriculum based Preschool in Northern Perth? I am a qualified primary school teacher and would like to open a new preschool near Joondalup. This would open for 2 year olds to 4 years olds. The proposed hours will be 9:00 – 11:30 or 12:00 – 2:30 or a full session from 9:00 – 4:30. The Preschool will be open for 48 weeks a year. I'm just looking at the general idea if there is a need in this area. So fees will be low as possible. I believe that play is essential in the lives of young children. My kindy program is play-based and references the “The Early Years Learning Framework”. I will create a safe environment to allow the children to develop their ability to apply their knowledge, skills and understanding independently. I believe that play is fun and exciting, enabling children to explore, solve problems and be hands on. At the kindergarten the program will be based around each individual child achieving at their own level at their own pace in a friendly, warm and vibrant setting. Hi there - I am a primary school teacher looking to emigrate to WA and was wondering if anyone knew anything about the DETs sponsorship scheme for teachers. I understand that secondary teachers are only being sought after at the mo, but that primary teachers will be for 2009 and 2010!! Yipeeeeee! The only thing is I have 3 children 4, 6 and 8 and a hubby who obviously will be coming with me and my worry is that 'apparently' through this sponsorship scheme you have no real say in 'where' you end up teaching. I don't mind working in a rural school - I did this 10 years ago in a fab school in mid NSW and had a great time, but I was single then with only myself to consider. My main worry is that I may end up in a 'bad' area - if there are such areas -!! Obviously I'd want my girls to go to a good school - the choice may be out of my control!! I have seen on here various times and also read on school websites. But i cannot seem to find exactly what these fees are. Does anyone know or can comment roughly per term how much these school fees are (for non private schools) and does it vary greatly by school/area? Does this fee include uniform also. I was assuming we would have to purchase the uniform intitially then use the school uniform shop to replace lost/stolen, damaged items as and when. If it helps, we are heading to South Aus

Hi All, I am moving to Australia next month along with my family (wife & 2 kids age 9 & 7). Currently I am living in UAE for last 5 years.. We are very eager to see Australia and get settle there. We are planning to land in Melbourne and would be looking forward to buy some cheap property in suburb around Point Cook area. Any good schools recommendation? Any guidance with regard to shipment of my stuff to Australia?? Can I ship my cars as well to get some savings on duty being an immigrant? Also wanted to know if any banks offer a credit card without getting a job. Hi, Hello..... First post here... :biggrin: Just looking for some advice really. I'm over here working as an IT Developer on the company sponsored VISA after being transferred from the UK. My girlfriend is qualified as a primary school teacher in Scotland, and chose to come with me to Australia rather than do her probation year there. She's registered to work in Victoria, but, despite lots of applications, has never been offered an interview for the graduate positions. We were under the impression that teachers were in high demand in Australia, but we've had feedback that she's up against 30-60 applicants for each role :frown: Queries: I wondered if there were any other expats out there doing teaching jobs... Whether they've had similar problems getting a job... Whether anyone has any ideas how she could make herself more attractive to potential employers... (e.g. tutoring, volunteering as a teaching assistant, doing a local course???) We're at our wits end really - She's been registered for a couple of months, and submitted 20-30 applications all over Melbourne with no luck. Any ideas ? 457ScottishExpat -
We have a 189 visa & are looking to move to Melbourne in August. We've had little success in finding jobs from the UK (well, we can find them, we just can’t get them!) so we’re now thinking we should come over & go contracting until something permanent comes up. This leaves quite a lot of scope on where to live but after a lot of research, we think we've narrowed it down to south-east Melbourne; Sandringham & around. Our lines of work mean that there are likely to be more jobs in the CBD & on the east side of Melbourne & we really fancy living somewhere close to the sea but without a long commute. We've not been to this area before but it looks good on paper. We have 2 kids; if our school year calculations are correct the eldest should be due to start secondary/high school in late Jan. The move (to Oz and from primary to secondary school) is a big upheaval & we feel under pressure to get the suburb & school right first time – we don’t want to have to move again shortly after arriving. We don’t have the luxury of being able to afford private school but neither do we want to end up living in an area we don’t like purely because there is a good state school there. So, in terms of specific questions: How have others solved this suburb/school quandary – which do you choose first? Any tips or lessons learned would be appreciated Does being 12 in December 2014 mean that you go into secondary school year 7 at the end of Jan 2015? (I’m struggling somewhat in mapping UK school years onto Australian ones) Any views on the state secondary schools in Sandringham & surrounding area for academically-inclined children? I’m thinking specifically of Sandringham, Brighton, Cheltenham & Bentleigh Secondary Colleges and Glen Eira. I've heard that most government primary schools are good - is it the case? Any specific recommendations? For zoned schools, I've heard that if you live in the zone then they legally have to give you a place – is this right for both primary & secondary schools? Any wildcard suburbs we should be looking at? Ones that we've not picked up on yet but would fit the bill? Thank you so much!

Hey, So, just wondering how school works here in AUS. Like, what grade do you graduate, what are the schools called, Middle school, High school, Secondary school, etc. etc. Just basic info. Considering I've come from the US, I may need to know as much info as possible. Ta C.P.
