  1. Hi TeacherScot.... just want to say hi, I may be of limited assistance, my wife is a UK teacher and we moved to Geelong because it is where she found work. Geelong has a lot of good private schools, she was given a full time perm job right away. Geelong is great.. My wife enjoys teaching much more here in Geelong. She is half way through her second year now. She came from an inner city Birmingham School to work for a private school here so the difference is night and day.. but thats not UK V Australia as such as your not comparing apples with apples. All she needed to do was register with VIT which we did from the UK. She came as my partner (im dual nationality Australian) so no skills assessment required for her. You dont have to sit any exams for Australian Curriculum you just learn it on the job.. The Pros * Much more polite kids * 14 year old's that are still kids * NO OFSTEAD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! * More freedom to teach what and how you want * $$$$$$$$ The Cons * She is emailing kids and parents in the evenings (private school they sort of expect it) * Activities outside of school times (but these are fun) camps, plays, sports etc..
  2. they spend too much chasing the champions league and nearly went out of business.... There was a time not so long ago they were super popular in Australia, Champions league, Viduka and Kewell..its been a slow recovery, but they getting there
  3. my mum does vic market for all her meats, I do the supermarkets but as said above you stock up when the items are on half price. Items such as Bacon, Orange Juice, Frozen Fish, sausages, Chicken Kievs, Chocolate, Sweats, Coke, Beans, Soup, Bread, dioderant, toothpaste etc are half price at least once a month. You just stock up when they are... would never pay more than 99c for Heinz Baked beans
  4. I dont think you have to bother anymore, neighter myself nor my girlfriend told anyone, applied for any refunds etc, but we got one through automatically without asking.
  5. its my wife not me thats the teacher. She prefers Australia, less red tape and no ofstead stress. She thinks they are behind where the kids would be at same age in UK tho.. sometimes its a good thing, she says the 13 year old aussie kids are still kids. UK ones thought and acted like they were young adults
  6. Good news for Victorian teachers the new government has scrapped controversial rating scale for teachers which could be used to deny teachers rising up the pay scale and has pledged never to introduce performance related pay.
  7. Database/Programer IT all rounder 34,000 Pounds UK (Birmingham) Database/Programer IT all rounder 80,000 Dollars AUS (Melbourne)
  8. Yeah, don't think the poor bloke has much of a say in things, I am not sure their marriage will last the distance...
  9. Was off work sick yesterday so watched a few wanted down under revisited.. there was one where they were both primary teachers, in the original show it had said they had applied for the visa... on the catch up bit it had the lady saying the visa still hadn't been approved and it may end up being 12mths and she was frustrated... then as the credits rolled the latest update was something like, despite being told by her agent the visa was being processed it turned out this wasn't the case, the couple continue to investigate a way to get to Australia. They should have made more of this to warn people only to use proper registered agents etc.. The lady teacher was the most positive person I have even seen on the show, loved Australia. Another episode which was interesting was a couple with child from Newcastle, the man didn't want to leave Newcastle at all, wife badgered him into moving to Australia, so after the original show he caves and agrees to go, not only that he falls in love with Australia and cant wait to go... So they sell everything and move down south with the wife's parents to save a little extra money for the move... then the wife changes her mind... wants to stay with her parents down south.... So the guy has left Newcastle and all he loves, and it wasnt even to go to Australia which he has decided is now where he wants to be... he said to the camera that he had been "done like a kipper" by his wife.. Was interesting
  10. Are u sure u need your qualifications assessed? my wife came over on my visa so didn't need to do that that was only if u were applying for your own visa. different state tho so may be different
  11. What do you mean by tracking? they told us what ship it was in and then we could use a website to track where the ship was...
  12. Which state is the house in? I am pretty sure in Victoria you would lose the 10% PLUS you have to pay the agents costs PLUS if they sell again to another for a deduced price you are also responsible for the difference between what you agreed to pay and what the new buyer has agreed to pay... It is really hard to pull out of a purchase here, unlike the UK
  13. If my watching of border security/nothing to declare (TV show) is anything to go by you cant enter on a tourist visa to look for work, if they suspect that when you land you wont get back immigration. So return flight and no work documents on you... cv etc.. when you enter
  14. No expert but I doubt very much you would have to pay anything, if is your only house and you move back to it. You are lucky this is even an issue, my UK house is worth less than paid 8 years ago
  15. Do you actually have to pay it at all? I thought the UK system was modeled on the Aussie one. I went to uni in Australia, the day i graduated moved to UK for ten years, never paid a cent in that time, when I got back to Australia money started being deducted from my wage to pay it.. Is it not the same? What can they do from the other side of world to make you pay it?
  16. They were talking about doing this only a few weeks ago, housing is overheating, they wanted to hike the rates to stop it but they wanted a lower dollar as well. Cant have both.. I have mixed feelings, as a person trying to buy in the next few months... hope house prices dont go higher... but it gives me more motivation to sell the dump i own in the UK if I can get 2-1..
  17. So it this an option then to get parents over inside two years? You just need the $60,000? So if you had a house with a granny flat you were willing to let them stay in they could sell their UK house pay the visa and be in your back yard in two years?
  18. There are loads of other threads on here with reviews if you search, we used them twice (two large cubes sent three months apart), nothing but positive things to say. Only damage done by customs to an Ikea desk when stepped on it while inspecting.
  19. Sounds a bit odd, I thought you only did a PGCE if your first degree WAS NOT in education... ie, 3 year science degree, + PGCE = Science Teacher, 3 year Maths degree + PGCE = Maths teacher.
  20. Might try adding something to this before starting my own thread... How about this situation? it is pretty similar. My house is worth much less than I paid for it especially when you factor in what was spend on rewiring, new double glazing, new kitchen etc... Purchased for 87,000 pounds, spend maybe 15,000 on it so about 115,000 , now the estate agents are saying if want a quick sale need to sell for 80,000... So it is a pretty big loss.. having held the house for 8 years. So if I sell you would think there would be no capital gain to pay... However when I moved back to Australia (I am Australia so date of getting PR wont be a factor) the exchange rate was 1.5 now its 1.9.. Does that mean I may have to pay CGT on it? Or would I be fine? Does it make any difference other houses in the same street (so the same house as its the UK ) are on the market for 100,000 - 120000 (not that they are selling for that). What about when they change the law soon so Capital gains has to be paid in the UK, because there is NO capital gain, will I be free of it or will there be some kind of tax double dip where even tho the law says you are now assessed in the UK, the Australian Government can also dip into it and tax you for the same thing?
  21. just an update on this I was posting many pages back.. my girlfriend/wife received her PR visa 2 weeks ago which was 2 years 4 months after originally applying. Applied October 2012, Granted the TR part in June 2013 (moved to Australia August 2013) and now has been granted the PR part. Been here 18mths now, going very well she has settled great, were married two weeks ago.
  22. we flew malaysian last week, I was sort of hoping the flight would be empty after reports of people not trusting them... fortuantly for them, unfortuantly for us, it was an overbooked flight and the flight crew said the London to Melbourne routes are always full... compare that to my last flight on qantas i grabbed three seats to myself and slept for 10 hours
  23. Does anyone know how maternity leave works for teachers in Victoria. private schools? I am presuming it's really bad here Tony Abbott wanted to fix it but for some reason everyone seems to be against it. We are newly married and had planned wait a few months then start trying for baby. but I thought if we do that and have immediate success the new one will pop up during the main summer school holiday does this mean you would lose out? do they count the six weeks holidays out of your maternity leave? better off delaying so no chance of January baby?
