With regards to the previous post about finalising visas lodged in May 2016, I take it to mean that immi is continuing to process and finalise parent visas but is not actually granting them until Australian Borders are open again. Soon they will be hitting June 2016 where there are a huge number of applicants to deal with - apparently nearly half of the total year’s visa allowance applied in one month! It seems to be their policy to keep us Completely in the dark, never mind that after 4 years we are all going quietly insane! It’s the not-knowing that is almost the worst, if we were given a realistic idea of when our Application will come up, at least we’d know and be able to make plans instead of living in limbo! It’s their end of year on 30th June. They’ve probably already used up their allocation of grants (c 6000) for 2019-2020. It always slows down in the couple of months before their financial year end and Covid-19 and closure of borders is definitely prolonging the wait. There will be more after 1st July once the new year starts but again the pandemic is adding to the problems. Although you get PR once the visa is granted and, in theory, could enter as residents they’re obviously trying to keep people out to avoid any further transmission of the virus plus there aren’t a lot of flights available. Then there’s also the mandatory 14 days quarantine, which you now have to pay for yourself in Queensland (other states will probably follow suit) . I've looked into what's required and it doesn't seem that difficult (plus I did my partner visa myself 4 years ago/PR granted this year). All agents I checked charge 5-6K fee and it's basically same with the department's application fee. So I'll have to fork out $12K just to start. I guess the answer is always it’s best for an expert to do the necessary. As for whether it’s needed, only you/your parents can decide whether you’re happy that everything is in order and you’ve no need for outside help. Many have successfully lodged applications themselves so it’s perfectly possible. Some have come up with problems and wished they’d used a professional. If you’re happy your parents meet the criteria and you do as sponsor then decide to either just go for it or pay up to take the hassle off your shoulders. I assume you are aware but the wait time for applications being lodged now is approximately 8 years. This can be an issue for some as at lodgement date, parents can be healthy and all appears good but many years later they could fail a medical and that’s the end of it. I think an agent is essential these days if you're going for a skilled visa, because they can get complicated. However as you say, a parent visa is fairly straightforward - they're either eligible or they're not. The only worry would be if they have any health issues which might lead them to fail the medical, in which case I'd definitely hire an agent who specialises in people with health issues. As Tulip1 says, I hope you're aware that the waiting time for parent visas now is at least 8 years. The government website is misleading - it says 4 years, but that is based on the fact that early 2016 applications are being granted now. The trouble is that in mid-2016, there was a huge surge of new applications - and every year since, more new applications have come in than visas granted. The Prime Minister has said that there are no plans to cut permanent migration after the Covid-19 emergency is over. The question is, will they hire extra staff to process the backlog of applications that have been on hold during this crisis? TIA We did it ourselves, the form like you say is straight forward, read everything twice and read the guidelines booklet.
