It's a worry, life can be so confusing sometimes to know your Arthur from Martha!!!?

@ramot, confusing?? When discussing this thread, one should be Frank and Earnest, don't you agree?

Because of the threat from ex cyclone Iris, still making up her mind as to where to go next, we have had high winds and rain squalls, ergo, I watched the lot...Might, if the weather improves, watch the marathon, all three on the last morning.

Cheers, Bobj.

Look at your own country though, top of the pile mate.

Australia top of the pile at the moment.  Don’t expect it to last though as they don’t really have any major threats in the track and field.

Track and field medals are spread out far more though with African nations strong in long distance and Caribbean nations strong in the sprints.  There is no strong nation in field events generally within the Commonwealth, it tends to come down to individuals.

There are dozens of events in the pool however and Australia have traditionally dominated that.  England are expected to dominate gymnastics.  The other category where there are a lot of events is cycling where most of the golds will be shared between Australia, England and Scotland.

It would be a major shock if Australia did not win most gold, silver and bronze medals in their ‘home’ games

Disagreee, it would be a shock if they did.  Sports funding hasn’t been a govt priority for two decades and will be cut further especially to sports such as athletics.  Australia needs sports funding like the U.K but it won’t be happening anytime soon

The only serious contender to Australia topping the medals tally is England, and England won’t win many medals in track & field athletics.  Australia have clearly sunk money into swimming and cycling but possibly not into gymnastics and rowing.  However, it is clear that a lot of money has been spent on the Games facilities and no nation is going to waste that investment without also investing in success.  It is why GB benefitted so massively from the 2012 Olympics with success both at Beijing preceding it and Rio.

Australia historically are by far and away the major medals winners in CG history with 852 Gold medals in the previous 20 Games compared with 669 to England who are in second place.

The feds don’t invest in sport in fact here in Canberra it’s a dirty word. The lack of funding  for so many female athletes resulted in them joining the ranks of AFLW for the guaranteed salary.  Australia need a lottery to fund sport like the U.K has done very successfully

Natives will do nothing in the athletics etc.  World champ Sally Pearson just withdrew and many of the others left athletics, hockey, netball etc for AFLW, for good reason.  Expect England to easily top medal tally as of course they should with their population

Not just thye population, England have always punched above their weight in almost every sport....they just love competing. Unfortunately my country only loves rugby and football and cricket..:(

Out at a cafe and watching athletics and Carrara is nearly empty.  Compare that to the Warriors NRL game in Auckland on the weekend which was a lockout (26,500) and they’re looking for a larger ground.  Not a good idea to put an event on with marginal interest during football season

It's the old Olympic cycle.  Massive funding prior to a home games, then a residual effect for the next one...then a decrease as the next generation don't come through because the funding was cut 8 years previously.  Happened to Australia, will happen to the UK.

France will be gearing up for 2024, then the Yanks in 2028 after a few shakey games by their high standards.

What i didn't realise is that a lot of it is due to the coaching, and the top coaches just jump from host nation to host nation, earning the big bucks when the budget is there.  Very business-orientated system.

The swimming is just a procession, it's easier for the Aussies than the v USA swim meets and they don't really seem that interested.

Cycling has surprised me, but again the UK cycles (no pun intended) to peak for the Olympics and often don't do much in between.  Then again, the Aussies have been stung by the money the UK chucked at cycling, pretty much wiping them out for a decade.

The rowing should be interesting too.

Do you consider that Australia can only cope with one sporting event at a time?

ignoring that Auckland isn't even in Australia, and this is the first time the NZ Warriors have had a team that isn't choking for years !

Except for AFL, crowds are pretty poor across all other sports here. They just don't have that culture of following in large numbers.

I tend to disagree.  RFL is well supported here, and cricket’s Big Bash games were regularly played in front of 30-40,000 people across the country.  Australia has smaller population than the UK spread out over a vast land mass too.
