  1. Hi, we started off in Melbourne 10 years ago, and moved to Perth. Took me a while to get used to either place (I am from Scotland as well) and we went back and forwards a couple of times, been in Perth now for a few years. My partner does FIFO work so much easier to be in Perth for him. One time I was adamant that I didnt like Perth and wanted to move back to Melbourne, so back we went, lasted 6 months, came back here bought a house and settled now. People say Perth is boring but in my opinion after living in both, its so much better here for little kids, we are in the Northern Suburbs so have several beaches very close, including Mullaloo, Whitfords, Sorrento, Hillarys. You can easy nip down the beach after school where in Melbourne we are at least 45 minute drive from a decent beach. Melbourne City was soo busy, Perth is quiet but I am much more comfortable wandering around there myself than in Melbourne, also I will drive anywhere here, where I would only drive locally in Melbourne. We are in an older suburb and its so much nicer and friendlier that the new build estates that we lived in when over East. I do like Melbourne but Perth fits us better. We dont go out much either, prefer to socialise at home.
  2. After you do your skills assessment you can get a restricted licence which means you can work supervised as a Trade Assistant. Trade Assistants are NOT just on Apprentice wages, you have to get a licenced electrician to sign off your work. You will have to do college and work supervised for around a year I think it is, things have changed a lot since we came over. With a restricted licence you will also be able to do electrical work that does not need connecting up to mains power. Things like building Switchboards. Each states licencing is different and they are all supposed to Mutually recognise each others licences but they don't. Duncraig is a very nice suburb. You may be thinking about a contractors licence - that is to work for yourself as a sole trader. Have a look at this https://www.commerce.wa.gov.au/building-and-energy/electrical-licence
  3. Maybe poster is not sure if they identify as the wife or the husband!
  4. By the looks of all the other posts they forgot about this Centrelink condition to receive benefits Updating relationship changes You need to tell us when your circumstances change. This includes changes to your relationships. If you don’t, we may pay you the wrong amount and you’ll have to repay the money. There may be other penalties.
  5. Sure its no problem, we had our daughter with us, she was already a citizen, but came up with us when we did the pledge, they even gave her a little toy kangaroo. There will probably be loads of kids there, the speeches are quite drawn out and boring so just take something to amuse the kids until its your turn to do the pledge. Then after that its done and you get a wee party pie and a glass of wine, congratulations on getting your citizenship:-)
  6. No point stressing, fess up and pay them back what you shouldnt have had in the first place.
  7. What exactly is behind the rest of Australia?
  8. You can only apply when you are in the country.
  9. Here you go! https://www.humanservices.gov.au/individuals/services/centrelink/child-care-subsidy I said its not means tested, it is really but you can have a high income and still be entitled to at least 50% of your fees subsidised, there is a table on this link will show you
  10. Dont know about paid maternity leave etc or waiting periods. Only thing I can confirm is that you should get the Childcare subsidy as you a PR, this is not means tested either, so you can reduce your childcare cost by quite a bit.
  11. I dont know where you get that idea from. I have just installed a new gas hob, also have bayonet fittings for gas fire, lots of houses in Perth have them. I have a gas hot water system. I also lived in Melbourne and several of the houses I rented had gas cookers
  12. It is not so hard travelling with a baby, sometimes people stress too much. Book a late flight so by the time you are up in the air baby will be ready to sleep for hours. You can take baby bottles with sterilised water and formula if the baby drinks it, little tubs of food, what would your baby eat for breakfast? Baby cereal with milk, take some in a little plastic container, and the cabin crew will give you milk. Lots of little snacks. If baby is too big for bassinet at least you can sit them in it as a rest from holding them. A baby carrier is good for when you get off. I have always done it in one go, no stop over, just delays getting back into a routine with yet another time change. You can take turns sleeping, the flight to UK is less than 24 hours, you can manage getting a couple of hours sleep at a time while the other parent looks after the baby.
  13. a do you seriously believe you would still be line for that job after 3 Years? be realistic!
  14. From the Dept of Home Affairs Website You must be outside Australia when you apply for this visa and when we decide your application Don't arrange to move to Australia until we grant the visa. We will let you know in writing if we grant you the visa.
  15. ][ All that will happen is they will spend their retirement complaining that they cant survive on State Pension - well if they hadnt spent all their super contributions!
  16. We moved from Melbourne to Perth a few years ago. I would say I wasnt sure at first but I prefer Perth to Melbourne. Much better for little kids, not so busy, depends what you want really
  17. There is an awful big difference between Cook and retail manager, no wonder it does not sound geniune to immigration.
  18. I dont think they need to be citizens but should have been here a certain amount of time.
  19. Yes you can, we do our tax through an agent, (a good one not H R Block!) and we can deduct expenses like Agents fees, mortgage interest, repairs etc, we had to replace a fence and the oven last year and these were deducted. Also there is a lot more safety certs to be done in UK, some have to be renewed every year and these are deductable.
  20. Try Direct lIne for Landlords insurance.
  21. We rent ours out. You have to declare the full rent as income, but you can offset the mortgage interest (not the mortgage), agents fees, any maintenance costs, costs for yearly certification like Gas Certificates, we pay around $3200 tax per year here for a rental income less than what you will be getting. You wont pay tax in both countries, you complete NRL1 as a non resident landlord and you dont pay tax in UK
  22. It also applies to Centrelink debts, Newstart, Youth allowance etc.
  23. That would be good, but I just like to cover all bases so I would check again that it doesnt just count from when your PR is granted
  24. well if you are pregnant now you are going to have the baby before 12 months so will you be entitled to maternity leave?
