Hi Nuttynan

We also had our acknowledgement in August 2012 and 17 months later like you we are stll waiting for a Case Officer, we have been told by our agent this could be another 2 months as they were advised by the pvc it could be as long as 19 months needless to say we are getting quite frustrated, as a person 3 days before us has already got a CO allocated in December.

Hi Genie1,

Hope everything is is well with you. We have done our medical on 30/12/2013. PCC,form 80,form 47a and dependency form for my younger son have been received by the department on 14/01/2014. Only thing remaining is AOS. My sponsor which is my older son, just come back to Australia from his three week vacation. Hope he do this by this week. Getting closer to the end of this long waited journey. Can't wait to end this waiting game.

I know I haven't posted a lot, since being a member, but thought I'd pass on our good news. We have been assigned a case officer and our parent visa 103 should be granted, so long as health is ok, by April. Our queue date was Nov 2007, so 6 and a half years waiting wasn't too bad. Good luck to everyone else who is on the list.

Hi Kelvintom

Our agent have had a letter stating it now takes approx. 18 months from lodgement date for a CO and that they are dealing with all the applications as quickly as possible. I know we have had Christmas and New Year but as you say two people have had their CO allocated before Christmas so I expected to hear by now. I have now sent the dreaded form 80 off (which has been revised 11/2013) and our PCC to our Agents. Just need the CO for the HAP to get our medicals done. Luckily our buyers are happy to wait a bit longer which is lucky for us. Good luck with getting your CO. Please post this forum when you do so it gives hope to the rest of us.

Hi all,

This is for those lucky ones who have already made the move; did any of you take a fridge/freezer with you and if so, were there any problems either with customs or the general working order of it once installed in its new home?

I'd also be interested in any advice you can give on shipping do's and don'ts.

Cheers, Val

Hi there,we are waiting for our Temp 173 visa. We had our medicals done in London on 21st Jan. There were some issues with mine and we suspected that we were in for a long delay ! Three days later get a call from the panel Drs stating that most of most tests were now OK ! Still a bit of a question mark hanging over us but CO has confirmed that they have been received at immi. Have also submitted our form 80 and numerous other docs. CO states that we should hear back from her within a few weeks and if all OK she will request the 2nd VAC. Might get to see The Rolling Stones after all (March 20th) !

So, know we continue to wait. Any advise from anyone about the best method of paying. Not sure whether to use Moneycorp and transfer funds to my OZ account and get bankers draft from them or to pay in London at Australia House. The exchange rate has improved a lot lately so this will help us save a few dollars. To everyone who is also waiting ...I feel your pain !!

G'day Val

Glad to hear you've got that far!

I expect there are people who have brought one out, but the general advice is, I think, don't – especially if you can get a reasonable price for it before leaving.

1. Fridges & freezers generally react temperamentally to being moved, and have to be left for some time time to settle down after being moved.

2. You may need to have all the refrigerant drained out (a specialist job), and then refilled in Oz. (I know that this applies to cars' air conditioning systems.) Of course, if this is done, it should negate problem 1!

3. It used to be said that European fridges are not powerful enough for Aussie conditions, but I'm not sure that this applies any more. I do know, however, that you're likely to want a good deal bigger fridge/freezer than in the Uk – especially if you're going to one of the warmer parts of Oz.

All in all, I would suggest asking your shippers for their advice – if they are specialists re removals to Oz they should know.

(BTW, after getting several quotes, we used PSS who were pretty good except for trying to charge us the cost of a parking ticket they got despite our warnings not to park on a disabled bay!! I suspect a lot is down to the crew you get on the day; our mob did an excellent packing job.)

The only general advice is not to take any booze – it's liable to attract heavy import duty, so drink it all at a farewell party instead!

Good luck! Mike

Hi Mike, thanks for the info. We were really only trying to save money as they're cheaper here in the uk. Ours is on its last legs so it may have to last a bit longer - we haven't sold the house yet. At least the exchange rate is better now!

Kindest regards,

Val

You may be better starting a new thread in the immigration forum as most people on this thread are knowledgeable about the CPV but would not know the answer to your question as you will probably need some sort of other visa for your wife to be. However, I do know there are limitations for a CPV holder on sponsoring a partner, athough I do not know if this would apply to you as a dependant:

Contributory parent visa holders

If you were granted a Contributory Parent visa after 30 June 2009, you cannot

sponsor your partner for this visa for five years from the date your visa was

granted if you were in a relationship with that person before your Contributory

Parent visa was granted.

Does anyone who is as yet non resident have a savings account in Australia?

Now the exchange rate is so much better I would really like to move some cash to our non resident bank account in Sydney, against (eventual) visa payments. This is unlikely to be for some years because we have commitments in the UK at the mo, but I would really like to feel we had the money 'on one side' and could forget about it for now.

Problem is our e-saver account pays only 1 percent interest, which is okay for holiday money but not okay for larger sums. Any suggestions?

Hi there,

We have a savings account at ANZ which we have had for a couple of years and also a current account which we opened in 2007 in Australia. We are still resident here but we do have our 143 visa. I don't remember if that was a condition attached to opening the savings account. A lovely lady at ANZ in London arranged it. We got a healthy 6.5% for the first 6 months but its now 2.5%. I would give them a ring and have a chat. There are also live chats on here regarding banking occasionally too.

Hope this helps a bit.

Val

Guest Brennie

We are currently in the process of selling our house to pay for and are going down the Parents contributory subclass 143.... We have been on the non contributory waiting list for 5 years, and our agent informed me we are still looking at another 9 years.....Eeek!

I will keep you posted on our process stage by stage! Our daughter is an Australian citizen and we have decided after all this time that Melbourne & our daughter is where we want tribe. ?

Hi all,

This just an enquiry to see if anyone has used the 143 and 173 visa for their parent(s)?

Looking at the latest info it would seem that getting a 173, then coming over to Oz and once here applying for the 143 would seem the way to go, as there is a £6,000 saving to be made, at current exchange rates. Rather than just applying for a 143 straight off!

Has anyone's parents had the misfortune of coming over on a 173 and then not being granted the 143?

Just trying to get a feel of the best route for MiL.....it will be two years before she can apply, and, I know that the visas may have changed but I just want to get a feel for what/how others parents went about it using the above visas or any others that are currently available.

I look forward to your wise words.

Mis

My parents have shifted all their money over to Oz already whilst waiting for their 173. They opened a westpac account in the UK (savings and current) and moved the money through a forex company. Once they got here (on their tourist visa) they went into the branch and negotiated the interest rate - as bankwest we're offering a better one. Westpac matched it and said to come back in when it expired in 3 months time to 'see what they can do' as otherwise my Dad will be moving it out to a better rate. The first woman they spoke to flummoxed them saying without a TFN they'd take 40% tax on the interest, after querying this with a second more senior person they are not liable for any tax on the interest.

Hope that helps.

If they have an Australian residential address they should provide a TFN or tax at 46.5% will be withheld.

The interest is then taxable in Australia and should be declared on an Aus tax return each year.

If they have a UK residential address tax on the interest should be withheld by the Aus bank at 10%.

The interest should also be declared on a UK tax return each year (Foreign supplement required), with the 10% tax already paid claimed as a foreign tax credit.

Best regards.

Well they aren't being charged any tax at the source at the moment. Hopefully their 173 will be through before June 30 and they can have a TFN and do a regular tax return at that point to sort it out. They were advised they couldn't get a TFN whilst on a tourist visa.
