Dismal England reactions?

I've read on other threads that some new migrants haven't found work for months. :dull: That would really be a huge worry. On top of arriving in a new, strange country to not have a job (for me) would be top of the list for stress. No wonder some of them feel like packing it all in and go back home.

6-8 months average in adelaide, and that's for someone who is skilled, experienced and capable.

Pity those who are betting on slender chances...

My husband was in the construction industry and that was a bit boom and bust. We moved from one side of Australia to the other because of the bust times. Once we were in Sydney it was years of steady work and I was lucky enough to have a good job for more than two decades in the same company. Not so easy to move around once children are in school though.

Thank you for being so honest with your experiences of moving back home.

It has made me reflect on why we want to move home.

The main reasons being:

1) Geneticially modified food - is freely grown, produced and sold in Australia and is highly toxic.

I only discovered this when i visited the uk a few years ago and a the severe allergies i had developed siince living in Australia disappeared.

After considerable research i discovered it was gmo which is band/limited in Europe. As there is significant scientific evidence that they cause serious health and environmental issues.

Since last year my son has also developed the same allergies.

2) support for learning disabilities

Our son has learning difficulties and we are constantly fighting for the private school to support him. His disability does not fit the Queensland funding model so it makes no difference private or public.

It was only last year (grade 7) that his teacher who is from the uk said that he would get so much more help at home in the uk. I researched this and he would qualify for the send program at home v nothing here in Australia.

3) Queensland has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world.

I, until diagnosed with an aggresive skin cancer on my face last year (fortunately removed and all clear), have been a very passionate horsey lady - ride dressage and a hiker. So being outside is the norm. But i have always been careful with sun protection as i have fair skin. So now avoid going outside. I have spent the last 5 months pretty much inside as the heat this year in Brisbane has been unbearable. I am also now very concerned for my family, especially my son who is also fair skined and the risk of skin cancer. At least you can wrap up if it is cold - not the same in the heat which i find suffocating.

4) to be closer to extended family

So really i know that it has been tough for your family to move back, any move is stressful no matter where it is. I think you are safer in the uk, free from the risks of skin cancer and free from gmo's. I cannot even eat out anymore or enjoy being ouside in Australia - so just enjoying lifes basics have been taken away..

I'm not a fan of GM food. But why would it cause allergies?

Hasn't genetically modified foodstuff including farm animals been going on for centuries? Tomatoes used to be tiny little berries until modified to the much bigger things we see today. Grapefruit is some sort of fairly recent hybrid as are a few other fruits. Chickens used to be half the size they are now.

GM food is a whole different ballgame to selective crop management. GM is about manipulating food crops at a molecular level producing something that cannot be replicated naturally.

in a basic way it has, selective breeding has been used to try and improve traits, but GM is different in that you can introduce a gene from one species into another, from a pig into a tomato for instance.

Was explaining this to someone a while back and also zero rated for new builds in uk

watching TV today about up coming budget Tax is going to rise.

I am definitely better off in oz earn far more ,have more disposable income and better life style

Not knocking the uk as I think oz and uk are best in world just one suits people better than the other

That's exactly it, we earn more, have more disposable income and for US our lifestyle is far better here. That's why there is no one size fits all.

They modify the crop so that it is more resistant to the stronger weed killers/roundup that is sprayed on and is absorbed by the plant which is then eaten.

My allergies 10 minutes after eating GM foods include severe diarrhoea and bleeding skin.

ah, so it is the weed killer you react too. So if we open up trade agreements with these countries after brexit you will be hammered.

Don't listen to it. We've just come over from the UK. England’s economy is relatively good at the minute, there seems to be a lot going on. Unfortunately the media propaganda is the killer. every time you watch the news its doom and gloom and unfortunately it sinks into people minds whether they like or not. There are downfalls such as illegal immigration and NHS being stretched to beyond capacity but theres issues in every country you go to.

Although we've been here for 3 weeks in Australia, we're finding it really hard. Myself and my wife both want to work and we can't find jobs anywhere at the minute. In the UK we'd be snapped up straight away. But you've just got to get on with life and enjoy the one you've got. Good Luck!!!

You're doing very well if you have a job after 3 weeks particularly if you have no contacts (not sure if you do or not). Keep plugging away!

UK outranks Aus as best place to live. it's in the DM so it must be right

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4290384/Switzerland-replaces-Germany-best-country-world.html

I see that Australia is ranked 4th for quality of life and NZ and Australia 1st and 2nd for retirement .......................... that is if you believe those ratings. I lived in Switzerland for a year and apart from it's beauty I definitely wouldn't want to live there.

I cant see how the u.k can be ranked that high....too many ongoing issues, created by consecutive govts thinking short term .....but I cant see how oz could be ranked that high for retirement either .

If and when I retire ,I want a smorgasboard of choice ...cheap travel ....choice of places to visit ....oz just doesn't have it .

Agree with your opinion about Switzerland.....like Austria ,stunning scenery ,in the main ,safe and clean ,but so bloody expensive , and mind numbingly boring .

Great for a visit though ....so close to the Italian lakes as well .....maggiore,como,garda ....iam there in the summer ...love it

It doesn't necessarily surprise me, it will come as no surprise that I consider this country a fantastic place to live. I don't think much of these surveys and reports, there is usually at least one to keep everyone happy. Having said that many in the UK really don't know just how good they have it.

We are the opposite and cannot wait to retire here.

We spent 30 odd years living in the UK and doing the Europe, Canary Islands, Malta type holidays and short breaks, now we are venturing to the likes of Vanuatu, Fiji and want to visit other South Pacific islands as well as Japan,, so then when we do retire we can travel Australia and visit all the places we have not yet seen.. Ticks all the boxes and allows us to cover much more of the world .

Japan is only about an hour and a half more flight time London than it is Brisbane.

For us, we have done pretty much all of Asia now, though would still like to do Japan. Not that interested in the south sea islands and heard a few fairly negative reports.

Have not seen as much of North America as we would like, but to be honest and I am sick to death of flying and will be happy never to have to jump on a plane again. Hence we are mainly thinking European holidays - Paris this year, maybe Italy next.

Vs ....northern Italy ....you only have to watch the new bond films to see that ...the opening of quantum of solace is filmed at lake garda and Siena .....casino Royale ending was at lake como ....and the new one had the streets of Rome shut for a few evenings....Rome ,Venice ,Siena ,the lakes, the dolomites...and then down to Florence and Sorrento ...go do it vs
