Guest The Pom Queen
How on earth do hospitals live with themselves charging huge fees for parking. It cost $90 a week at the hospital in Brisbane, so ended up costing us $180. I was in a ward with lots of elderly people who would be struggling on the pension, how on this earth do they expect people to pay $180, what if you are in for a month or more:arghh:
amibovered
That's a disgrace, I thought it was bad enough here, but it looks like a bargain in comparison.

I'm shocked staff have to pay for parking as well @ali don't they get a pass?
Guest hill billy
I went with my daughter in law and grandson to the Royal children's hospital in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago, the parking fees were ridiculous, the nurse told us they have to pay to park as well!! Guest
yeah was over $100 for 5 days in Brisbane this week, so I just parked a 5 min walk down the road where I knew I could park for free as wasn't paying that!
Marisawright
Parking at Sydney hospitals is much higher than that, but I don't think there's an expectation that in-patients will use it, it's mainly for visitors and people seeing specialists. If I were going into hospital for any length of time, I'd take a taxi. I know you had a long way to drive - I guess if I was in that position, I would look for cheaper parking away from the hospital and then taxi it in. Yes but inpatients have their family visit, Rob can't walk far so had to use the car park rather than the street, he visited twice a day. I'm shocked staff have to pay for parking as well @ali don't they get a pass? Cost me $18 for my last appointment at the Royal Brisbane. I dread it when they're running late with appointments as you're clocking up another fee increase if you only go over by a few minutes. I was parking in Mitre 10 car park when I had an appointment at the Prince Charles about a 5 minute walk away, but when I went last Thursday, they'd put up a "No Hospital Parking" sign. I don't know how they sussed it 'cause the car park's nearly empty anyway, despite servicing three other businesses. "So sue me"! I parked anyway. I won't have to think about it anymore other than the 1 month and 6 month follow up as my next appointment is for admission..............that's if I survive for a follow up! VERYSTORMY
Odd - we only have a private hospital - Peel Health Campus but which also treats public patients, but parking is free

Yep, $12 for me yesterday when I went just a few minutes over the hour for my O/P appt. If the money went to the hospital it wouldn't be so bad, but it probably goes to some private company who is laughing all the way to the bank. Skani
Odd - we only have a private hospital - Peel Health Campus but which also treats public patients, but parking is free Yes, we have free parking at our private hospitals. The public hospital is opposite the largest city council carpark which is free for the first 1.5 hours . One of the advantages of living in a smaller city - for which I am very grateful. Guest
Rockingham is quite far out though, the hospital I was at is in South bank Brisbane. If it offered free parking it would be totally overloaded. Unfortunately, also many 3rd parties own the carparks to save money when building them. Chortlepuss
People needing to park at hospitals either work there or don't particularly want to be there (maternity excepted...). So I think it is scandalous to have to pay such huge sums for parking - and if it really doesn't go to increase the hospital coffers, that is appalling... AussieMum
So if hospital parking is free, who pays for building/maintaining the parking? Imagine the outcry if a hospital said "oh, we're going to spend $x million dollars on our carpark but that comes out of our funding pool so which piece of medical equipment should we forgo to pay for it?" It was in the region of £120 for six months, can't remember exactly. Which is not bad as I have paid £15 just for a day. You can take public transport, and its the visitors that get hit not the patients. Although the patients need visitors to survive. I wouldn't mind if the money went to the hospital. newjez
Followed up with, "It took me 3 hrs to make up my mind" :-) Or you could buy the item, then bring it back three hours later saying you changed your mind. Actually I did hear that a supermarket near my work has cameras and issues fines if you overstay, but I couldn't see any notices, and I doubt you could do that without stating your terms. amibovered
When I was in Truro earlier this year Tesco had number plate recognition cameras at the entrance/exit to catch people overstaying the parking time limit.
Petkula73
Cabrini in Brighton and in Malvern both charge outrageous parking fees. I had respiratory issues earlier in the year, which meant I was getting out of breath just walking from one room to another, but I thought I'm buggered if I'm paying $20 extra on top of everything else for parking. So I parked on the street and wheezed myself along over a few hundred metres to the hospital. Daylight bloody robbery is what it is, especially given street parking in Brighton right outside the hospital costs nothing.
bristolman
At our local hospital in Logan the parking was free but was full of commuters as the train station was opposite. It would invariably take ages driving around trying to find a spot.
fish.01
When attending a near city centre hospital try and book your appointments for a weekend (if you have a choice) as some of the hospital adjacent car parks have much cheaper weekend rates as they don't have all the commuters piling in. Also, if you can walk, the zones around the hospital are published on council websites so you can park on the street just beyond the restricted zone.
