ghostgirl
This could be who my son and his wife flew with ... he said the crew were doing exercises, which is OK, but they would stop what people were doing to do it, wake people up, he also said there was very little room to move, the food was bad too ... and they spke very little English .... I just googled this, search results included a hilarious video of them all doing it, they looked like they were being forced haha can't wait for my China Southern flight... anitalund
I arrived back from Sydney yesterday - me and my 3 kids are all up at 515am (jet lag city) - we've done it a few times as my husband is working there, travelling alone with 3 kids under 10 isn't great but don't worry about it, if I can do it anyone can! Just sit, eat, drink, sleep and get up and walk about a bit, it's a bit boring but if you like reading and watching TV you'll be fine! We are moving there soon, can't wait! Incata
If it is you, alone, with two toddlers, it is hell. I would never do it willingly again.

littlefoot
If you can't sleep on the flight, book a journey that lands in the evening so your sleep will sync on arrival. If you can sleep on planes, book a journey that lands late morning/early afternoon and stay up until nighttime in Aus. I've always done the latter and have never really suffered jetlag because of it (the trip back is trickier).
Phoenix16
I envy everyone who makes that journey willingly year in year out, I mentally want to do it but I feel physically unable to (or is it mentally)? I've had 2 DVTS from flying so naturally I feel quite scared to fly back to UK, as a 25 year old diagnosed with DVT I mentally told myself ' you will never see OZ', I did subsequently emigrate but flew business class and was dosed up with clexane and got here but to jump on or off a flight back is so scary so the reality for me is I'm here and I better like it cos that's it!! Seriously, to fly home I need to see a GP who needs to refer me to a specialist who then needs to prescribe me some anti coagulant injections so I just don't think about it anymore I just accept I'm here to stay although that 'horrendous' phone call we all dread that means you need to get on the next plane scares me so much and I'm burying my head...... Tickled Pink
I hate it, dread it even. I'm not one for films so the entertainment does very little for me, although I do scan through the music and make a play list. I struggle to sleep as I'm sensitive to noise, and am a light sleeper so I just become more and more exhausted. I just dont like being confined for so long without being able to properly move about, but I'm a keen runner and boxer! There are other reasons, but I won't go on... For me, it's simply one of the worst things I have to do. I've done it five times in five years, and I've told my husband I'm not prepared to do it again for a while. oz bound pom
Really isn't that bad at all. Done manc-perth with emirates 3 times now, the last time only a couple of weeks ago with a 2yr old and apart from a couple of 'moments' because he was overtired at Dubai it really wasn't bad at all. no jet lag either way, on any trip, if you arrive mid afternoon force yourself to stay awake till 9/10ish, set your alarm for the morning et voila, works a treat. try and enjoy it, afterall you'll have paid enough for the flight! Incata
If I have to do the journey again I'm going by boat. I've done some investigations about going on a container ship and I have to say I think it looks a far better (if slower) way to travel. I've told the hubbie that he can take the kids on the plane (revenge would be oh so sweet - he who said it was no big deal to do!) and I will go by ship and see them 6 weeks later. Sadly, kids under 12 are not allowed on board so I would have to go on my lonesome. What a shame!

littlefoot
I reckon by the third day of staring at nothing on the horizon, you'll have wished you just flew.
Murta
We did it two weeks ago with a busy 3 yr old and 7 yr old. Headi back now today so will reserve judgement but the first trip was grand. We were mentally prepared and practically. No worries
Incata
I reckon by the third day of staring at nothing on the horizon, you'll have wished you just flew. Oh I don't think so. Me, pile of good books, no klds, someone else doing the cooking, cleaning and washing up. Sounds like 6 weeks of heaven to me!
sehmi101
Have done two round trips from Perth - Birmingham in the the last 6 months with a 2 year old. The key for me was pre-planning in terms of my sons sleep patterns. We stopped in Dubai each time for 12 hours and checked into Millennium Airport Hotel which is 5 mins from the airport and they let you book for the day only which is cheap (book directly with them). My tips would be to stop yourself looking at the in-flight map that shows you how long is left until arrival and also just think of the air miles that you are collecting So all in all the flight isn't bad and we've got one more to make in August and then we're stick to going to Bali for our hols
jimmyay1
have done it business & first class and it's not been bad. my experience doing it economy, is not good however, too confining and boring. if you can afford to upgrade, do it as it's a far nicer experience. mattress
We all flew business class with Emirates on one of their newer A380s. They were excellent - food, service, comfort, entertainment, etc. but the flight still knocked the stuffing out of us. Really not looking forward to having to have to do that trip again. docboat
Really? Never again?? I mean to say, get real. Imagine the stresses the poor dears feel when they have to deal with living in a foreign country, hazard a taste of vegemite, sample the strange chocolate, miss their UK TV programs - and then they can't fly back to dear old Blighty, poor dears. Done that a few times, in the old days, but on a regular steamer - anyone used the Blue Funnel line? - and it is a great way to travel. But I love the flight, really enjoy a bit of luxury in the lounges in between flights, and catch up on sleep and reading on board the flight. grahamffc
Try get into a mindset that it's almost an infinite amount of time. Take 3 books, plenty of news papers and magazines, download some tv, films, and games onto an iPad/iPhone, and take a load of snacks. You'll find that between eating, sleeping, and watching the plane's films you arrive having barely had enough time to do all that you wanted. louisella
I really like flying so enjoy the whole experience, yes it can feel a bit tedious at times but in the grand scheme of things, it's nothing. I've done the UK - Oz flights 3 times in the last 10 years and have to say Emirates so far is my favourite. Although price wise I'm looking at Qatar from my trip later this year. If you can afford to go business then definitely do so
pablo
How i wish i liked flying! have i mentioned i despise it, and begrudge people happily sleeping and enjoying the flying experience?
HappyHeart
I enjoy it up to a point. It's an exciting part of the trip for me, my son and husband are plane geeks so they get excited too. It's a bit much into the 8th hour though especially if you cant sleep. First 4 hours..fun. Next few, trying to sleep..then just counting the hours till landing. Its all good really, part of the experience. I find antihistimines and alcohol help me to sleep but not everyone does.
pablo
Even the first half an hour in the cab is to the airport is tortuous, and dont mention queuing in the airport! and people enjoy this?! masochists?
