  1. Places like Kmart sell them. Have you looked at the car seat laws in NSW? I don't remember the site but it was one if the first that came up in a google search. Or maybe a friend of a friend has a car seat collecting dust? I got rid of mine that way! Good luck!
  2. Someone will probably correct me, but I believe tourist visas have 'no further stay' conditions attached. I'm also under the impression that applying for permant resident while on a tourist visa would be the quickest way to p155 immigration off. If rules aren't followed strictly then it might be that you can't apply for a few years. Moving to Aus is not cheap, quick, or easy. Check out the dept for immigration's website. It's huge and will answer most of your questions. Good luck!
  3. Have a good read of your lease agreement. Look for break of tenancy clause, and the one that mentions living without landlord/agent turning up without due notice. Sometimes they hide a condition that states if you give notice that you have to let them show the property to prospective tenants. However, you still should be given ample nnotice that someone will be coming round. Good luck!
  4. Yeah I was too til my mum sowed the seeds of doubt...apparently there are some that have a long relationship & kids as a way to an 'easy' visa. Personally I think that's nuts! I couldn't bring kids into a relationship that wasn't loving.
  5. Maybe I'm just over-thinking this, but I've read posts of others who seem to have sent a mountain of photos etc to prove their relationship is genuine. We've been together since 01, married in 05 & we have 3 kids. So, for the 309 spouse visa I'm planning on sending in: 2x form 888 (oz stat dec) a joint statement re our relationship 5x photos 2x cards ( Xmas & valentines from oh to me) 2x statements re our relationship, one from my bridesmaid (I'm also gm to her son) & the other from my cousin as they have seen our relationship from the start. council tax bill with both our names child tax credit statement which has our & the kids names on copies of marriage certs, passports 6 months of bank statements showing money flowing between accounts oh, & one of those fake newspaper front pages that oh gave me as an anniversary gift ( it's a spare as the main one is framed in our lounge). Reckon that's enough? We're not hoarders so I haven't got the wedding invitation to besties wedding 4 yrs ago!
  6. Plenty of people have low-key semi-secret ceremonies & then chuck a party when ready to celebrate. My bro have very small & intimate ceremony on a beach in Bali, then had a party a month later. His misuse is rather shy & doesn't do big public displays. I threatened to elope if everyone didn't butt out of mine & that calmed everyone down! So long as your relationship is genuine, it doesn't matter how you do it. congrats & enjoy your day, however you decide to do it!
  7. The cheapest way to travel over distances is by coach (greyhound is one company). Train travel over the same kind of distances is incredibly expensive & most to it for the experience rather than a method of getting from A to B. You might find that a year isn't long enough to travel & see everything you want to see. My parents are 18 months into their 10 years long tour! You could take AU$ with you, and transfer the rest into the bank account you've already set up. Check out http://www.moneysavingexpert.com for info on international transfers. If you've got hotel sorted before you go, take the time to get local knowledge about backpacker accommodation. I don't know about websites, but gumtree has loads of scams so maybe local papers etc when you get there? The 'must see' will be personal as it depends on what you're into. Grab a lonely planet or rough guide & get excited! Enjoy your adventure!
  8. The CTF is stuck there until the child turns 18. Inform the fund holders of your new address( & every time you move!). Keep documents relating to it safe so that when the time comes your child can have it.
  9. Have you applied for your australian passport yet? Rupert is correct that your wife and any children can apply for a spouse visa and you don't need to have job etc ready to go in Oz. Look on the Australian immigration website for your particular circumstances; a citizen by descent who has never visited. If you get no luck on the website (and it might take a while as there's a lot to read!) then a migration agent could help. I've not personally used one, but plenty of users here have. Good luck!
  10. OP, I'm with Perthbum; it can take 2 yrs to settle. Also WA might not be the place for you. Have you travelled to other states/cities? It's hard when the homesickness hits & won't go away. I was homesick for the UK for a long time. Now I'm 'homesick' for Oz! Can't win eh!
  11. Your OH has to fill his own forms in. How is he doing on the writing of his statement? :cute: LOL I've only mentioned that in passing! He saw me writing mine last night & I was quick to explain he doesn't have to write that much! Of course, being a writer, mine is in 'first draft' stage..... Maybe I'll wave pork scratchings at him to prod him into it! We're booked in to have docs co-signed and witnessed in 2 weeks. Hoping for a March submit as I'm waiting for stat decs coming from Oz.
  12. Thanks Snifter! My dummy app is covered in post-its and has separate sheets for OH to fill it in! He's gonna roll his eyes when he sees what he's got to fill in LOL. Usually he gets me to complete forms as I have the patience for it, but I've insisted he fills this one in as I've got my own form to complete! Don't get me wrong, he wants to be in Oz, he just hates the mountain of paperwork! Might have to bribe him to get on with it
  13. Depends on the property. Most will have a WIR in the master bedroom and not in the kids. However I have lived in properties that had none at all, and I've seen others that had them in each bedroom! Saying that, the WIR in the kid's room was more like a cupboard with a hanging rail LOL! Good luck deciding! Most of our furniture is falling apart so we're willing it to stay together until the big move so it can be chucked!
  14. Has anyone typed the info into the PDF of the visa app, then printed to sign? Or do we have to hand write it? I'm getting fed up with re-printing pages we've made a mistake on!
  15. Hi & welcome! Do a little research into where in australia hairdressers are in need. You might find that in the cities there are plenty of hairdressers already & the need is in the rural areas. Like the middle of nowhere compared to living in London! Good luck!
  16. Hi Snifter. Dentist sure can! It's not on the list for Aussie passports but when I rang in a panic because banks don't do it anymore, I was told a dentist can. They can also witness statements too. My dentist sure is gonna earn her fee when I go in with heaps of paperwork LOL
  17. Glad to hear you made it! Yep, that sensation will never be forgotten. I still remember it clearly; 01/12/91 & walking thru the automatic doors at Adelaide airport into a wall of heat!
  18. And I had to add a name change too. Oh the nightmare of finding someone to guarantor it...eventually I found out my dentist will. Good luck with your application!
  19. On the gift voucher front, Coles-Myers group vouchers can be bought online in the UK. You pay in AUD$ & they will be in the form of a gift card posted to an australian address. My gran does it instead of sending cheques. Once I deposited a cheque and was told I still owed them money as it didn't cover charges LOL. Have a fab party & good luck with the move!
  20. Hi bluewaterz! What were you expecting to pay? We're getting our application together & when I checked last week it was £1800....really hoping its not more!
  21. Check out the centrelink website. When the links work, it has good info on payments & eligibility. Good luck!
  22. :arghh:OK, slightly panicking! I'm going through the checklist and I see that I need to provide evidence of employment as sponsor for my husband.....um, I've not worked since 2005 as I gave up work to look after children (have 3 now!). Hubby goes off to work & I make sure the bills are paid on time and everyone is clothed, fed & clean LOL. I was all ready to state that I provide other kinds of support that are valuable in a long term relationship. Anyone else been in this situation? My parents have said they'll put it in writing that they will support us if need be, should I get this in with the visa application?
  23. Hi! You might want to check with the airline as to what they consider a 'stroller' as some airlines mention 'umbrella fold' on their websites. If the phil & teds is ok, I'd get the travel bag as baggage handlers aren't known for their gentle hands LOL. I loved my p&t & I would have been mega peed to find it wrecked! have fun flying!
  24. I was 13 when we migrated in 1991. Oz was still riding high on bicentennial fever & anti-British sentiment was everywhere. I found it v hard to deal with as I didn't understand white on white racism could happen. My parents moved me from a state high to a private school that had a higher level of migrant children. It got v weird in 1996 when Britpop made it cool to be British! As an adult I found that tolerance to racists can be low; it is not unusual to tell someone off. And if someone won't give you a job because of where you come from or the colour of your skin, you won't want to work for them anyway. There are so many migrants & children of migrants that you will soon settle into life & the racists will just fade to insignificant bigots. Good luck with your move!
