  1. I think it's unfair but then I really enjoy living in Perth
  2. Available in Woolies and i'm sure Coles
  3. In what way have they been changed? If you can give a little more information people may be able to give some suggestions.
  4. Hi and welcome to the forum. More info re: police recruitment is here: Join the WA Police Force » Step Forward (letsjoinforces.wa.gov.au). You don't say what qualifications that your partner has to work as a TA. There are some courses - cert IV springs to mind. It may be worth her exploring if these can be done as distance learning in order to have a recognised qualification when she lands here. She may find initially she might have to volunteer at a school to get her foot in the door. She'll also need a working with children check for WA
  5. My sons girlfriend did her test (Perth) in March and has got her ceremony invite for July (Cockburn).
  6. I know what you mean lol. Historically, parts of Oldham where I was originally from before moving to Preston were part of West Yorkshire and the villages around Saddleworth would still rather be Yorkshire than Lancashire.
  7. At parents evening for my daughter her French teacher was from Yorkshire and it was the first time we'd met, she picked up on my accent and asked how long we'd been here (which was about 3 years at that time), she was really surprised as she'd said that she thought from her accent that my daughter had been born here). I've had older (UK born) people here say to me that they can't decide if my accent is Lancashire or yorkshire (it's Lancs)
  8. Have to say that my dealings with the Police here (work related) has been a much more positive experience than in the UK I'd miss the wide roads both for driving and in my street. Blue skies/weather Our outdoor area - in summer we BBQ and in winter have a fire pit (and BBQ) Public transport Friendliness of people - went for a walk last weekend and every person we passed had a greeting
  9. Similar to us, I still love the journey into the city along the river. It probably took us about 10 months to feel as if we'd stood still (we were on a break in Busso) and I remember thinking that it was the first time since arriving that everything felt in order.
  10. I think accents (particularly for children change), I don't think it's a matter of trying to fit in, just that they seem to have an 'ear' to the tone and adjust. My son's girlfriend has been here years and sounds Australian .. until she's with her family and then she's Scouse. My colleague at work could tell on a Monday if i'd have a long conversation with my dad on the phone over the weekend because my accent would be broader.
  11. Trying to keep with the OP request .... whilst waiting, get ready for the move, order a box of Aussie treats/foods to try and sample some Aussie wines and beers (all in the interest of researching the move of course).
  12. I think your daughter would need to be dependent at the time of visa grant (not just application). As suggested, do have a chat with a good agent about pathways, you'll also need to undertake a skills assessment (AASW) before submitting your visa application
  13. When we built an extension in our UK home we made a much larger kitchen and made the old part of the kitchen into a laundry
  14. There might be some foods I miss but to be honest it's probably nostalgia - I loved hollands meat puddings but they're probably not as good as I remember
  15. The problem is that some people still use ED's as out of hours GP's surgeries. There's been a lot of pressure of beds recently and ambulance ramping. ED's also have the 4 hour rule (just like the UK), quite often the problem is that people need a bed elsewhere in the hospital and it isn't there/ready - so the patient has to wait in ED.
  16. We go to a matinee performance and my husband and son and daughters partner usually come into the city and meet us at a bar for drinks. This weekend we introduced my friend and son's girlfriend to the ballet - they'd not been before.
  17. We've seen some excellent shows/bands here (and some not so good) - to be honest much more than we did in the UK. it's a shame you don't like ballet - the West Australian Ballet company did the most brilliant performance of Giselle (went at the weekend), it was beautiful.
  18. Australia for me, Wales 2nd for Rugby (because of my Dad) and England if they're playing anyone else. I never thought my hubby would support Australia in the Ashes, but he does now, I think in part it's the familiarity with the players, seeing them play and feeling as if you know them/know their form - have an opinion when the selectors name the squad or give out the contracts and who they leave out. We don't have that investment with the English team.
  19. hard to say, I always say to my hubby that our two would have left home at 18 for Uni and just visited, instead they've continued to live at home and study (my daughter moved out last year to live with her boyfriend) - the majority of our children's friends all studied within the state. We're in WA and have 5 uni's within an easy commute . I guess what they don't know they can't miss.
  20. My daughter's Instagram says she's a British born Australian and that's probably how I think of myself. We've been here 14 years and Citizens for 12, both my children have now lived in in Aus. for longer than they lived in the UK. My son says he's English (apparently it gave him some success with the ladies lol). if we're overseas and people ask where are you from we'll say Australia as it's our home.
  21. If it's medically necessary due to previous complications get your current obstetrician to write a referral letter detailing your history and the reasons for the C section, if you get over before baby is born you can can present this.
  22. You've made my morning Dr D with this comment - it's made me really laugh out loud
  23. I just want to say welcome the forum and everyone has to start somewhere in gathering the information they need and having their own timeline. We do have some agents who regularly post and have good reputations and they are the experts on visas the rest of us are well meaning armatures in regard to that, but offer opinions from our own experiences. You'll get positive and negative stories and you have to sift through those for which are meaningful to you. Good luck with your fact finding and hope it all turns out sell.
