Melbourne Valiant
Having applied for 100 jobs and no luck I decided to go to TAFE to improve my chances in electronics. Having four years experience in fitting trackers into vehicles I just can't get a job doing anything. I have warehouse experience-can't get a job, data entry experience-can't get a job. Now unto 150 job applications, been here since February. I really wish I didn't leave the UK, i'm stuck in the house all day, no friends, no family, and camper van that is ****ed. The carburettor blew when we imported it. After loving the place after backpacking from 2005-08, I now actually hate Melbourne, I hate Australia. So a warning to all before you come over, make sure you have loads of money or have a job lined up, because life is just pure **** at the moment. Quoll
So sorry to hear that MV - what's next then? Moving on to UK or elsewhere? I hope you've enough cash in reserve to make the jump. Good luck with the next step!
wolvesaussie
Have u tried geelong. I have seen the same company advertise a data entry job for months. Maybe they struggle to fill. Look at geelong IT jobs on seek
Melbourne Valiant
It's a bit of a commute from South Yarra! I want to get my taxback from the UK, mend my camper van, flog it, buy a single ticket back to the UK where I can get my old 40k a year job back, play golf, snooker and football and watch my beloved crap team Port Vale!!! That is far better than being holed up in my house for eight hours a day applying for jobs. I'm going insane, insane enough to move back to Stoke!!! :-)
Aunt Agatha
Sorry it hasn't worked out. I was going to suggest looking for work elsewhere in Oz but it sounds like your heart is set on going home. You've certainly tried hard with 150 job applications. Lots of luck with selling your van and the big move!
Melbourne Valiant
Probably more than that I've applied for, 22 since June 26th. It's getting worse now though, I don't even get rejection letters anymore. I don't have money to relocate so I'm off. Cheers guys.

Lucia
Oh man, that's rough! I'm so sorry that this has happened! If you can get your old job back in the UK then you're laughing. Your UK life sounded great anyway! Good luck
Perthbum
It really seems as bad in Oz to get a job as it is in the UK, why do they keep advertising for immigrants.?

rosiew
It's not visa fees, per se. But the economy relies on building population numbers, and those numbers might as well be skilled ones who are also willing to cover the costs of their application through visa fees. Heaven forbid that we should take a few less people with skills we can't actually use right now and replace them with a few more of the world's 15 million refugees! jac2011
Before you give up, have had wondered why you may not have got a job? Have you spent time ensuring your CV is good enough to stand out, have you ensured that you have changed it to an Aussie style CV perhaps taking advice from recruitment agencies that specialise in this situation? Have you been out and about introducing yourself to people in your industry getting your face and name known that you are looking for work? Really sorry to hear your having a shitty time mate, I've only been in Australia just over a month and have had a totally different experience obtaining employment but I'm in Perth perhaps the job market is more bouyant here, your skill sounds pretty specialised have you thought about going self employed? 3FatCats
I hate to hear you are having such a bad time, and I really understand as I was unemployed for 10 months when we first arrived in Aus. Sometimes it isn't anything you are doing or aren't doing, it is just the way it is... What I will say, and of course this is just my own experience, is that I ended up getting a job through someone who knew someone and made a personal introduction. Once I was "in" and they saw my CV and had a chat with me, they employed me there and then in a fairly senior role. I was about ready to give up then too and just go home, in the end I got the job and we were able to get life back on track, but some money back in the bank. We are now back in the UK but that is by-the-by. I really hope it works out for you either way, if you do come back to the UK send me a PM and I will gladly loan you the necessities for your first weeks back!!! Today I picked up a 16 piece cutlery set for 1.75, you have to love Asda :cute: Good luck anyway. newjez
My top tip is to always call back to get feedback from application or interview. The feedback is valuable, once or twice I've got a job this way, and I love the sound of them russling round to find your CV(it always sounds like they filed it in the bin). Chortlepuss
I'm sorry you're having a rough time - went thru a similar thing early last year, months unemployed, running out of $ with everything being so expensive (the high price of things relative to UK matters so much more when you're not earning $), in the end went to UK for holiday - got contract thru serendipity (ex employer approached me), came back after 5 months, calmer and more confident and through contacts got a job and not out of work since. When I was out of work I thought I was unemployable and got very very down - You spend your whole day on top quality applications (I was often commended on the quality!), searching for work and get nothing in return - now I am earning pretty good money albeit in a very insecure contract situation. Things do change - I do understand why you want to go back (as do I) though. It's a real roller coaster working here with casual hours, insecurity (no sick pay, benefits or safety net) offsetting higher relative wages. All things considered, I'd rather have the security of a lower paid role knowing that I can plan for holidays etc and not feeling obliged to work all hours offered as I never know when I'm going to be out of work again. Good luck, and try to keep your spirits up. I found the library and local gym a godsend when I was out of work - It's hard to be miserable swimming in the sunshine.
