NURSES - Moving to Australia

So today I received an email with the great news that I'm eligible to register! I'm a UK DipHE trained mental health nurse, so I've been registered with conditions of supervision - mostly its just saying I must be supervised in my practice for 12 months by someone who has been registered with AHPRA for 2 years with no conditions on their registration. I also have to complete an 'assessment' after 12 months to assess my performance against the National Competency Standards for RNs.Still having to jump through AHPRAs hoops but at least I've got my registration after a year of waiting!Hopefully this signals more good news to come for those waiting on their registration.Good luck to everyone waiting - I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for you all. Thanks for all your support Joe :)
Hi Joe,

Have you 'accepted' these conditions yet and had confirmation? I am a Midwife and after 10 months, had similar news. I was told it would take a further 2 days to process, but after 5 days still nothing! I know 5 days is nothing in comparison, but still frustrating, and who's to say it won't be another 2 months!

Hi All,

I also received the same news as Joe this week. I am to a RMN with a HE Diploma. I applied back in January and have been following this thread since then. I haven't commented or registered with Poms in Oz till now.

Until a couple of months ago I thought that I was going to get offered a bridging course, as (in my mind) behind the scenes at APHRA they had already decided to knock back anyone who can't meet criteria 8 knowing it would be a large portion of applicants and reduce it further by offering bridging courses to diploma trained nurses knowing it would, due to the course cost and impractical nature of not earning while studying put off all but the most determined or affluent. Due to there government moving away from immigration of skilled workers where possible and filling the need with home grown talent. Also I understand that there aren't as many posts going now as they have been filled by newly qualified Australian's who don't initially specialise in mental health, paediatric or LD so they get jobs in adult wards. Hence why the supervised practise is not offered to adult nurses with diplomas from UK (feel for u guys).

Perhaps I am being over cynical, but it seems to fit for me.

I actually respect Australian immigration for being stringent and so concerned about who they let into the country. But I do feel there is some warranted criticism aimed at APHRA on how they have managed the change in there registration procedures, I know for one the uncertainty, miss information, ignored communications and protracted nature of the application has caused me undue stress, uncertainty and anxiety. This isn't a critic of all the individual staff members at APHRA as they have suffered from the poor management of the change as well, having to manage a huge backlog and I am sure being bombarded by 'what's going on! phone calls and e-mails', I feel for them also.

My partner is paediatric trained and applied at the same time but we haven't heard a final decision for her yet, so it still might not be over, finger crossed...

To try and answer your query Leep123. It said on my decision letter that I had to the 31st October to appeal in writing the conditions placed on my registration. if I did not I would be automatically registered from that date. So sounds a little different in your case?

I also have a couple of questions:

Has anyone who is registered and is working done so with a work sponsored VISA? as this would be my preferred path, but I hear these aren't so popular now too?

And has anyone who has been registered with the supervisory conditions had difficultly in finding work or is in employment, as I am unsure on how prospective employers may react to the conditions?

Hello,

I'm looking at trying to get assessed by AHPRA. I was previously registered in perth in 2003 when I held a working holiday visa.

I was wondering if this makes any difference to be being accepted for registration by AHPRA as I'm a diploma trained adult nurse.

Has anyone else who is diploma trained and has been previously registered been assessed and allowed registration since they changed all the rules?

Hi MartinH

just to answer your question on work with sponsership visa... i am RMN , i hav had my LOE from AHPRA since March 2014 and have been applying for Jobs

since May 2014, i have send my CV to over 5O hospitals and agencies and have had 2 interviews which they have not offered or rejected with the post, got references

too by will just not make a decision. I belive if the posts are not filled by Australians or people with PR already in Australia then those like me and you at the bottom of the list will get the job offers.

Am thinking of Appying for PR now which will cost me an arm and a leg and come March 2015 my LOE will expire and will have to start again with AHPRA. i have a Diploma and i have just completed a top up degree and am terrified to face AHPRA again.

Just to add my experience. I'm a midwife who came to Oz on OH 457 visa. I applied for 20+ jobs in the area which I live and never even got an interview, so I started calling for feedback. I was told that on a 457 I would not even be considered and that citizens and PR are always considered first and that I would never get a job on 457 as all the posts would be filled as I was on the bottom of the pile.

So for 6 months post registration I did nothing, but in the meantime applied for PR. As soon as I got PR I applied for jobs again and was offered 3 within a week and one from my local hospital who had previously turned me down. So now I'm working but what a waste of time for me and them, where I work now is always short of staff but on the 457 I simply was never offered anything, they would rather be short staffed than employ someone on a 457, sorry but this is fact.

You need PR, Aussie look after their 'own' first.

Good luck all

Tina

I am a newly qualified RMN and I have had 3 hospitals/state HR dept's who keep in regular contact with me to find out when I will have my PR as they would like to either offer me a job or employ me within their health service. One lady said she would love to employ me and if she couldn't she would find me temporary work until a position became available. A woman from QLD Health emails me monthly just to say hello, talk about the weather and tell us what's currently happening over there in terms of work and news.

I think the PR may be what is making the difference. I am not even due to come over till August/September next year.

I've sent two web enquiries to AHPRA neither have been answered yet and I called them the other day I wasn't able to get a clear answer. Think I will call again and try to get them to send me something in writing.

Just need to know if its a No so I can get cracking on with the top up degree.

Hi Tina

when you send your CV to hospitals do you register on their website and upload your resume? I am coming on a PR and I am not sure where to start looking for jobs. I am a RMN.

thanks

Hi,

I applied for jobs via the website in my case Queensland health and mater but actually what got me a job was sending direct to the hospital. I did also apply direct to each recruitment department (Queensland Health have these on their website) once had PR and also got a couple of offers via this method. I rang around and got the name of the NUM or MUM nurse unit manager or midwifery unit manager and sent a paper copy to them. I have this week also been working at another hospital as was recommended and have seen lots of jobs posted there even though none of them are on the website.

I was told to approach each hospital, literally turn up with ,y CV in hand but did not feel this was really me! However, knowing what I do now if I had my time again I would at least call each MUM/NUM and speak with them, Aussie do like the direct approach.

Its all about getting your foot in the door and once in your will get plenty of work. PM me if any more questions.

Tina

Good Luck Lisa, I think it helps that I am not always looking at the most popular areas and I am not being too fussy in the role I do on arrival. Fiona Stanley are recruiting without interviewing at present and were requesting references only. However, I have decided to be a little more choosy in the area I live in and therefore it may take me a few months to secure the work I want to do in the location I want to do. I don't move to September, so have decided to wait until I get AHPRA in the new year and get my ANMAC skills assessment posted off and I will start looking again for work. Worst case scenario, with 12 months work experience there are the nursing agencies.

Good luck with the end of your degree, I am sure it will end before you realise. It's a completely different experience being a qualified. I was the only nurse in charge of 2 challenging behaviour wards yesterday :-(... It was such a hard day!

Thank you. I bet you handled everything just fine! I was thinking of applying to the graduate nurses programme but will still start my job in jan either way. I know it is difficult to get on to but what's the harm in trying? It's good to know I've got my job though incase nothing materialises. What areas are you thinking of?

I would prefer QLD however would be happy in WA or VIC. In QLD We are not so fussy, we like Gold Coast, Bris, Sunshine Coast, Townsville and Cairns so these are what we are focussing on at present. We have 4 weeks accomodation in Sunshine Coast on arrival so it would be lovely to find something in this area.

As a MH nurse I am avoiding grad programs just due to the aussie nursing programs being different to the UK ones. I did hear from several employers who would have considered me with 6 months experience. Not sure if that is the same for other branches. Just email around... x

A variety of areas then, that will increase your options. We would prefer queensland's Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast which are popular areas I know so much more competition for jobs, especially grad positions! We would also consider Perth, WA, but out first choice is queensland. We lived in Qld for a short while, we were on a student visa and came home dueto our visa having lots of restrictions and me wanting to do my nursing. We loved the Sunshine Coast, miss it so much. If we go the PR route is it right that I need at least 12 months experience to qualify for it? I thought I knew this! I've read so much I'm forgetting what I've read! Good luck with everything. Keep in touch and let us know how your getting on x
