Lol i bet the majority of you on here were never part of the boom anyway. Chances are you worked in Perth on standard wages while people like me worked in the boom times making the big cash. And guess what you lot all survived on standard Perth wages so don't get carried away trying to put people of coming to Perth.

Pretty much everywhere in Australia is more difficult these days. Melbourne is getting so crowded it is beyond a joke- it is looking more like Beijing everyday with the high rises and congested roads. What once were lovely semi rural towns are now horrible messes with concrete blocks spreading upwards and outwards. Apparently Melbourne now stretches about 130 kms across.  How foul is that? Perth has a long way to go before it gets like that- but it does need and always has needed a bit more life about it.

Arriving in UK after living in Perth, felt great I can promise you.  It feels like being your trip across on the plane has just blasted you forward in time by at least 15 years.

Why anyone would want to go away out there these days is beyond me - weak pound, strong dollar, it's expensive, property is way overvalued and there are no jobs.

Still it can re-invent itself as a centre for arts and culture......can't it ?   Its perfectly located for that isn't it...?

Boring is a very subjective opinion, for many its not. I've had some amazing nights out in Perth, Cottesloe, Scarborough even the Crown Hotel & Casino when I've had a suite there and had a good weekend, so the nightlife is reasonable IMHO. Golf at the Vines, or water sport has always been good to me. That being said, yes I prefer NSW.

12 years in and I am still not bored or nuts!! Each to their own.

Indeed, if it works for you then great, at least you got in at a good time.    Don't you miss being able to take off in your car somewhere different for a weekend  tho ?  Personally I just love being British.

Just love the naivety displayed with such posts to put it mildly. Most all living in WA were definitely part of the boom.....just many impacted negatively. The so called boom went way beyond a few workers in the mines earning too much. The cost of that so called 'boom' (still ringing in my ears)impacted on Perth prices big time. It was overall a negative.

That being very much a negative to living in WA. The cost of travel can be rather prohibitive as well for many. WA is rather unique in that sense though. Personally while Britain was of course okay, far preferred easy access to several countries while living in Middle Europe al within a matter of hours.

When I lived in the UK I never had the time or money to just take off as I don't here.  I still love the UK just choose not to live there as I love living here more.

I can see you point nb ....there are parts of the u.k I don't like ....and parts of life here i n the uk i don't like much ..

The over population in the south east being one of them .

i arrived back in dover ,late yesterday afternoon ( Sunday ).

because of the wall to wall traffic ,it took us 5 hours to get home to the West midlands ..it does my head in .

but the u.k is much more vibrant than Europe right now ...busy, busy ,busy ...but the traffic drives me potty ...and tbe summer has been poor .

i have a love/ hate relationship with both oz and the u.k ...nowhere is perfect

Unless I am mistaken does living in Perth stop you from being British? There are copious amounts of places you can bomb off to  off to  for a long weekend if you wish from Perth, petrol is very affordable or specials with flights!

Personally , I could retire in bunbury tomorrow ,and at one time that was a distinct possibility ,but its ebbing away .

Margaret river ...definitely not ...what is there to do ?

I want to be out and about ,especially as I get older ...not vegetating

I reckon there's more to do in Margaret River TBH. Surf's better, pubs are better, lots of live bands on, closer to wineries and breweries, Augusta not far away for the adventure race. If you're not into big surf there's always the river if you fancy a bit of pleasant boating, fishing or SUP.

I like it. Not that there's anything wrong with Busselton either. Just that the ocean is protected there and is pretty flat. Great for swimming but a bit boring even for surf skis. Plenty of decent fishing off the jetty. Kept the kids occupied for hours when they were smaller.

All this earning too much is a relative term isn't it. My eldest has been working FIFO as an electrician/instrument technician for a few years now. For the last 18 months he's been on a 4 weeks on 1 off swing, 10 hour days. He gets up at 4:00am to go the the gym. By the time he's finished work, has something to eat he's tired and goes to bed.

Fair enough he's been well paid, travelled, had long periods off work and done things, been places that other people his age (27) could only dream of.

If you break it down to hourly rate though it's not fantastically high. I get more hourly than he does, working in Perth and being home every night. He's single though and loves travelling so do it while he's young I reckon.

If you're going to bring wages into it start with the bankers and the million dollar bonuses. That's what needs to change.

there again , I have just got back from Milan , lugano , lake come and lake Maggiore ....there is no comparison .

it would be bunbury for me if I was in oz ...margaret river would keep me occupied for a couple of days ...but live there 24/7 365 ...when I have Europe on the doorstep ..no chance

i asked you this before paul ...whats the hourly rate ?

because to me ,if you are living and working up in the desert , They better be bloody paying you well .

I have a family member that does it ....his hours and working situations wouldn't be allowed in Europe .

FIFO is a big con imo.

Few years back got into a discussion with a few lads who do it and thought it was great money.

Long story short, I would earn the same if not a bit more if I worked every other weekend and that's doing a 6 - 8 hour day and get to go home every night.
