Lambethlad
Over recent years there has been a growing trend, especially from poms in oz to want to celebrate Christmas in winter. So now Woolworths have bowed to pom power and are stocking Christmas Mince Pies in July. It makes sense really. We no longer do the full turkey and Christmas pud thing - nobody feels like eating when it's stinking hot. I've even heard of poms driving up to Mt Buller for the weekend so they can have Christmas in the snow.
Que Sera Sera
No its just not right! Cant be doing with Christmas much as it is without doing it twice. Think the layby thing is good though for the kids toys though if you have little ones.

The AFL guys are advertising this weekend's games on Foxtel, wearing Santa hats. Are they barmy...just because it's cold doesn't make it Xmas? The best Xmas day I ever had was spent sitting on a beach in India, ringing mates asking them how miserable they were stuck in the house playing trivial pursuit with the heating on. I might however, take a few of those mince pies all the same...
nicolac34
I'm another one that doesn't really get the Christmas in July thing! If your desparate to have Christmas in the cold then just go to Europe over Christmas, don't change the date/have it twice! I will however be popping some mince pies in my trolly - yum, no need for those to only be once a year!

RockDr
I thought xmas in july was an aussie thing, not particularly for poms? agreed, most poms I know, myself included went "wtf?" at the concept... That said, I consider mince pies/mulled wine/fondue/etc etc to be winter rather than Christmas related, and have absolutely no issues with consuming them in July. Was most disappointed with the wollies ones I picked up yesterday though (note to self don't shop when hungry...) so will just have to try to remember to make my own next year... Alaska
Seems a lot of Aussies are doing it - a few at our school. We are having a big get together at at the Everton Park Hotel which should be nice.

ramot
It's just an excuse for a get together so what is wrong with that!!! Most Australians I know do the whole sea food feast at christmas, so again what is wrong to have a lovely hot roast turkey during the coldest months. Yes we all know it's not really christmas, but we all have a laugh. Would the politically correct spoil sports on the forum prefer it to be called "Winter Festival"!!!!!!! I'll raise a glass or two, to all you miseries, on sunday while we are eating turkey with all the trimmings. Life's too short to fret the small stuff. Paul1Perth
We have done it for a few years now. Just a bunch of friends that go out quite a bit together anyway. Just another excuse for a good meal, mulled wine, Christmas cake and a laugh. Just take it in turns for who's house we go to.
JoandJon
We're doing it - as you say it's good for a laugh, and not to be taken too seriously Although we've been asked to bring along the Xmas crackers and pudding.... I'm struggling to find some I'll have to admit!!

wakeboard1980
Christmas in July is nothing new, well not in Sydney anyway. I remember it being advertised and spoken about when I was a kid. Could never understand it though, did all the grown up people not realise that they were either 6 months early or 6 months late? Xmas was and still in in December....but each to their own. We just used to call the get togethers in July................BBQ's
Guest guest30085
I remember loads of pubs/restuarants advertising Xmas menus/festivities when I first visited Perth back in June/July 1996, I did have a WTF moment like someone else has already mentioned (I thought Id been transported forwards six months - amazing what Jet Lag does to you ), but I dont remember it being mostly Poms who were celebrating the Baby Jesus in the wrong month, in fact there were a lot of Aussies celebrating. I dont think its a bad idea - another reason for people to celebrate and meet up with family and friends and be nice to each other - I cant see a problem . . . Except if the kids want 2 lots of presents each year . . . . . .

boganbear
I did see mince pies in Woolies the other day and thought how stupid can you be when Christmas is not until DECEMBER. If you want a cold Christmas, go on holiday to Europe in December. I thin Christmas is over-rated myself and think there is nothing better than having a very simple celebration with a barbie. You must be mad to want to spend all morning slaving over a hot stove making a massive, wasteful gluttonous meal. I suppose you would celebrate Bonfire Night at Easter too. boganbear
You didn't like Santa Claus as a kid did you? lol I just think its a silly idea but Christmas is a religious festival and not being a religious person anyway, I do find it quite wierd how people get into debt, eat too much, drink too much, get stressed over something which most people actually don't believe in and get sucked into all of the commercialism of buying presents to suit retailers needs. Santa wearing a red suit was originally a marketing ploy by Coca Cola and before this, was rarely portrayed wearing red. I'm not a killjoy, i love a good celebration and party for the things that are important to me. Christmas just isn't one of them!

I was a bit over the Xmas meaning a bit as well, except for spending time with family, but now we have a little irk I must say I'm looking forward to Xmas again, including Santa and all that goes with it.
