PLEASE READ: What medical condition have you had but still got your Visa? HELP!!

Hi all.

We had our meds on friday and all was going well until they got to my 4yr old son who has a medical condition called Tuberous Sclerosis. Basically it means he has benign tumours on his brain & in his heart which causes Epileptic fits. Sounds serious but if you knew him you would see he's a normal 4yr old, no learning/behaviour problems on any other problems.

He was diagnosed in January 2009 after having 5 seizures in a week. He was put on medication (which he takes twice a day) and thank god he has been seizure free since.

His consultant is hoping to take him off his meds if he is seizure free for 3 years, fingers crossed.

The dr that did our meds has asked for more info on his condition, and long term prognosis even though we gave her 12 pages of reports to read.

Im very concerned now that they wont give us a visa because of this so I wanted to know what medical condition you have had and still been given a visa? Has anyone with epilepsy or simular ever been given a visa?

Also if we are refused can we appeal?

Sorry its long but really worried and need advice please

Thanks x

Hi,

We went for our medicals in December during which time I was having investigations into a blood clot that I had in October which they thought was caused by a hole in my heart that I had since childhood, my consultant had said that I would need an operation to close the hole up and I mentioned all this at the medical, when the results were sent to Adelaide it said on my file that it had been refferred and we were waiting to be asked for further information but were granted a visa with no questions at all.

Hope this helps a bit.

Celia

At the time of our medicals ....

Hubby had high blood pressure, actually it was "white coat syndrome" and, eventually (several weeks after our actual medicals), he finally got the required 3 OK readings done at our GPs.

Our middle son has / had SVT (Supraventricular Tachycardia) which is a heart condition and was taking daily beta blocker medication at the time.

I had three slipped & ruptured discs in my back.

Ongoing medical problems - Hubby gets severe gout and takes daily medication for it.

Apart from that, everything else was fine!!

We passed our medicals

Good luck

Hi

Its quite normal to be asked for further information, even if you have submitted extra paperwork. Also be prepared to recieve notification to go and have another consultation with a private Panel Specialist who specialises in your sons condition.

All the above happened to me, at the time i was nearly having a nervous breakdown, but it didnt stop the visa being granted and i have been here over 4 years now.

Good Luck and i know its easy for me to say ,but try not to worry

Thankyou all for your replies. Im hoping that once they look into my sons condition they will see he wont be a major burden. I think its just seeing EPILEPSY that concerns people.

We've managed to get hold of his consultant & she is going to write up a report for us. His nursery teachers have also said they would write a report of his social/behaviour/learning which may help, who knows?

Anyway glad it worked out for you all & thanks again.

The more info you can get the better.

With my son's heart condition his Paediatrician/Cardiologist wrote a report stating that on his medication he had never had any repercusions of his condition and that it was highly likely he would grow out of it but if not then he could have a very simple proceedure to rectify the problem.

Everything crossed for you and I completely understand your anxiety; been there done that!

All the best,

Kari :wubclub:

Type 1 Diabetes and high blood pressure (and I was the main applicant). The doctor doing the medical ran some extra blood tests and sent them in with the report (which had to be referred) but was passed with no extra trouble.

We have medicals on friday. My 3 yr old son was born prem at 30wks and as a result as mild hypertonic muscles which translates as mild cerebral palsy. BUT he is fine and is the same as any other only just 3 yr old. We have never claimed benefits for him and he is treated as every other child but the LABEL is the main concern. People just presume the worst and the truth is you wouldnt know he had a medical condition if you saw him. So any reassurance would be great! It would break my heart for that to be a reason to be refused because I wouldnt change him for the world he is perfect in every way and I hope they see that too.

I agree with you 100%, my son is no different to the other 3/4yr olds in his nursery, he has the best personality ever & I wouldnt change a single thing about him and for this to be an issue is kind of upsetting because its like they are pointing out a disability which Ive never seen his condition as.

Fingers crossed for us all & good luck for friday x

Hiya all ,

iam worried about my hubby being to much over weight .. for when we go for our meds . Anyone had this problem ..

cheers carolyn x

Hi

Was worried aout this too as we have our medicals tomorrow. Read another post which had a link to the panel doctors' guidelines regarding BMI. Remember reading that it said a BMI of under 30 is acceptable but if your BMI is between 30 and 40, it would only be referred if there was an associated medical problem eg high blood pressure, diabetes etc. Maybe someone else can clarify this, can't find the original post.

Cheers

Hello bigbird.

Re nipple covers, this happened to my mum at a routine X-ray. She was called back urgently due to a small density. When she got there she had to tape paperclips to her nipples before they did the new X-ray!!!!! Clearly cost cutting lol. Everything was ok it has just been the nipple they could see. Apparently sometimes they show up more than others tines. Good luck. Hope it's all ok for all of you.

I had a shadow on my lung, probably caused by an ordinary chest infection. My x rays had to be sent to Sydney for referral but got the OK in 3 weeks. The case officer said that anything out of the ordinary is sent for referal as a standard procedure even when many things are obviously relatively minor.

Thanks everyone for this thread.

I had my meds on Friday and have to get a GP letter about one of my responses (I hope you don't mind but I'd rather not say what its for). I've been worrying about it since Friday - I am seeing my GP on Monday. The doctor on Friday told me that provided the GP supported what I said (and I can see no reason why he wouldn't) it shouldn't be a problem.

Still its a worry all the same.

I agree with one of the earlier posts - this really has been a roller coaster of a journey. We seem to be so close now but here's yet another hurdle....

Best wishes to all of you who are also trying to get through this final stage.

I guess it may all come down to what sort of educational provision he may require. I have known of several kids with TS and they have all been in special schools here. I believe there are varying degrees of the condition and so it is quite possible that there were other kids out there who did not require special ed support. The general impression one gets from cases like this is that if a child has special needs enough to get them into disability support in Australia, there is a good likelihood that they will be refused a visa. I would suggest that if you dont have a good agent who specializes is medical conditions (George Lombard and Peter Bollard are names that usually crop up) and if you find that the condition is a barrier to your visa, then you seek their advice. Good luck!

I have epilepsy for which I have had brain surgery to remove part of my temprol lobe, still take meds, have partial and tonic seizures how many each month/week depends on lots of stuff.

I had a long wait and had to produce an extra med report from my neurologist. I'd already included one from my GP & I got my visa.

Great thread, hubby has arthritis in both hips although one replaced last year so suppose only one now. And our son has mild autism, has no problems really in a mainstream school doing very well with little support but know both will get us referred. Reading other posts above i think we have got off lightly, lol.
