Hi everyone,

Glad to hear others' positive AHPRA experiences - gives us hope!

We're wondering whether any other nurses have had or are having a similar experience to us, and also whether any one has had to wait as long as we are for AHPRA registration?

Background info:

My partner Alan applied to AHPRA (Melbourne office) 9 months ago. We got all documents that required certification certified by a solicitor. 6 months after he had applied he was asked to re-submit 2 documents; copies of his passport and diploma, as we were told that these 2 had to be certified by a notary public, not by a plain solicitor. (Not sure whether we just missed this instruction on the website? seems a bit random that it's just these 2 documents that required certification by a notary public?). Anyway, AHPRA received these re-submitted 2 documents on 3rd May. Today Alan received the following response to his email asking why his application is taking so long:

"I am now waiting for the next available Committee meeting to review your file as you have specialised in Mental Health. Unfortunately the next meeting isn’t until July 7th. Once I have the result I will contact you as soon as possible via email. "

Hi

I too have waited 9 months and got a similar email although my application goes for approval on 16th June as I am learning disability trained, I understand it is merely a formality. Fingers crossed for us all, it has been a nightmare of a process that included complaints to AHPRA and writing to health ministers in Victoria. Good luck

I have finally got my registration!!!

I have also waited around 10 months for my AHPRA registration. I got told the same thing that it had to go to committee which I then had to wait over a month for. Because I am a children's nurse they have told me that there will be conditions on my registration that I can only work with children (as far as I'm concerned that's great, I don't want to do anything else) I will have to sign and send back a document once I have received it, then when I am finally in Oz I will have to go to a ahpra office with 3 specified forms of identification. I too applied to the Melbourne office but we are planning to go to Brisbane, at the time I applied I didn't know you could send it anywhere else.

My friend who applied to the New south wales office, who is also a children's nurse, got hers back within 5 weeks with no restrictions. I would suggest applying somewhere other than melbourne!!!!!

Goodluck everyone, it will happen in the end!

2 days short of 7 months and I am now eligible for registration YAAAAAY Also a children's nurse and applied to Melbourne office. I to had to sign a letter saying I will only work as a Paeds Nurse, thats all I want to do, which I signed and sent 2 weeks ago and today recieved an email with a scanned copy of my eligibilty letter attached saying ther original copy is in the post.

Finally I can let my new employer in Melbourne know that I can book a date to travel and then start work. They have been brilliant with me and very patient.

Was all the stress of waiting worth it????? Now I can say yes as I'm over the moon. So stick with it folks, you'll get there.

Woohoo, Melbourne here we come :-)

Horray for good news!

Melbourne office recently informed us that yes, applications sent to their main office are taking a lot, lot longer to process than applications sent to other offices. This is because they get so many more applications, as on the application form only the Melbourne address is given out. (Whilst they're aware of this problem, I don't know if it necessarily follows that they're addressing it...)

Once Alan's application goes to committe, we've asked for them to email us the document he needs to sign and post back in order to get his eligibility letter, just to save a bit more time, (probabily only a week or so - doesn't really make any difference after 9 - 10 months of waiting). They said he could expect this email 2-3 days after the committee meeting.

So I guess the thing to do is not send your application to Melbourne!

Hi my application was promptly dealt with once I had sent a written complaint using their complaints form which I then sent via the tracking mail delivery system. Complaints to David Davis, health minister for Victoria resulted in a lot of coverage in The Age ( Victoria's on line newspaper) re Ahpra and all of its issues. I have a job in LD for NWMH in Melbourne but have extensive experience in mental health so I can only pray everything runs smoothly tomorrow. Will let you know when I hear anything but would recommend a written complaint to AHPRA.

I just want to scream I hate ahpra. I've had enough. App sent in jan emails going back and forth. This and that isn't good enough for them. Old school trained. Blah blah. Won't accept one post reg course I did even though 60 credits as I can't get a transcript for it. Their latest email tonight now tells me that the mentorship course I've just done 3 months level 3. Essays assessments etc. Isn't good enough for them either aaaarrrghhh. The fact that I'm a senior nurse here does that not mean anything ??? Are uk nurses such a poor quality to aus ones that what I'm starting to feel - like a second classx citizen I just don't know what to do now What's the point in the DIAC giving me a visa on the basis of being a nurse if I'm not good enough to work there as one. So sorry for the rant. I just don't know what to do now. We have been in this process of emigration now for nearly 2 years. But think may be the time is up now ?? But then I don't want to give in to ahpra either. Grrrr!

Thanks for reading

ARRRRRGH indeed! My professional body, Speech Pathology Australia, also made me feel as if UK Speech & Language Therapists aren't trained to as high a standard as our Aus counterparts. I had to proove certain post-grad competencies as they decided what's covered in UK undergrad training isn't sufficient. However, in my experience I really do feel that the opposite is the case; UK undergrad training better prepares graduates than the Aus equivalent.

Maybe there's a general Aus mentality of talking yourself up and a British one of self-depreciation? In my professional experience this is certainly the case, and I've made a conscious effort to follow my Aus colleagues by talking more positively about myself professionally. I cannot imagine my Aus colleagues comming back into the office saying 'hmmm, I didn't do so well in that therapy session!' whereas my British colleagues say stuff like that all the time...

So please don't doubt yourself or despair! x

Hi Jane

Yeah i'm still stressed lol. The plans are just so stressful, once you get your visa you think that is it but then you have to open a bank account, sort out your currency and plan to get your stuff over!! :arghh: We have been getting phone calls non stop from shipping companies and currency companies and all sorts. My head is bursting with it. Brian is now worried that his painter qualifications won't be noticed in OZ so he thinks we might have to pay to get some test done. We could really be doing with speaking to someone. I find it hard to look for a job as well  there seems to be quite a few to be had but how the hell do you decide where you want to live and how far you are willing to travel. Honestly i'm physically exhausted with it all. (I'm a worrier) lol.

Booked the flights, we leave Mon 26th September :jiggy:

That really is rubbish about your visa, i am sure you should hear something in the next couple of weeks. Do you think you's will be out there in time for your AHPRA date? Have you's looked at shipping and stuff? If you want to, e-mail me cos it sometimes doesn't tell me when you have posted on here, pmtsmith@hotmail.com

Speak soon xx

Finally eligible for registration got an email from AHPRA on 16th June the same day my application went to the board for approval. Totally elated. I am old school RNMH ( Registered Nurse In Mental Handicap Nursing) but have post grad studies in Asperger Syndrome and extensive mental health experience. Hope for us all yet, good luck everyone. My whole process took 8 1/2 months.

Hang on in there everyone! Melbourne here I come :-)

Oh Pam,

Try not to stress. Once you get here you will need to decide on where to live and find a job.. Until you drive around it's very hard to know. We had set our hearts on north Brisbane - Caloundra, but when we got here we drove around the gold coast too. And this is where we have settled. Don't ask why the GC, it's just a feeling we got. Everyone is so different on where they make their choice. I don't want to live any where else but on the GC side.

As far as jobs are concerned there are loads. I gave up my ward job, only 2 weeks ago (shifts upset the kids and nearly killed me) and am currently looking for the ideal job. Trying different things.

Started working in a new GP surgery last week - casual hours. Never done practice nursing before love this but not enough hours, so had an interview last week for the blood donor service (never done b4), interview on friday for outpatients in Robina and also had a call today from GH hospital, wanting to interview me for the casual pool. With the new GC hospital opening next year, they are wanting to recruit an extra 500 nurses. Preferably on the pool, which is like bank/agency in the UK, and then further down the line, employing you on a permanent contract. I'm very excited about the nursing opportunities here. Especially when you think how bad it is in the UK. Almost like saying "they need me, more than I need them", they are that short.

Don't stress Hun, it will all work out in the end, just enjoy this last time for a while with family and friends.

Take care Hun, take time out for yourself, you don't want to run yourself into the ground before you even get here..

xx Helen:hug:

Yayyy, about time too. :jiggy:

When you get here be sure to make this 1 of your priorities, to go to AHPRA with you ID and eligibilty letter, especially if you need to start work ASAP. It can take a few weeks for them to put you on the register once you get here. Keep badgering them once you get here. Sorry to say it's not quite over yet, but nearly there. I finally got my certificate in the post 2 weeks ago, a month after they actually put me on the register officially.

Enjoy, youre on the last hurdle now.

Its not just us with problems with AHPRA, every nurse I speak to, has had problems.

Good luck, x Helen

Awh Thanks Helen  It is always good to hear that from someone who has just moved out. I see that there are plenty of jobs to be had and i am defo up for doing anything because i am fed up in my job the now anyway so i am looking forward to doing different things. Good for you for applying for different things as well

I am trying to focus on spending the time with my family and friends, i am just a stressed out kind of person hehe. God i am even stressing about our leaving party, i have never had a party before, even when we got engaged we never had a party now i know why haha. Honestly can't wait to get out there and start a new life in the sun!

The gold coast looks lovely and if that is where felt right to you then that is where you are meant to be

Let me know how you get on with the jobs, take care mrs

hi

what are the fees for midwives wanting to register with ahpra from UK. i am emigrating to australia in october and want this in place by then.

it says on application form that there is an application fee $115, annual registration fee $115 and an overseas assessment charge of $220. it seems a bit steep. can any

one confirm if this is correct please.

also do i have to contact NMC to let them know i am going so they can send something to ahpra.

and one last thing. as i have only been qualified 2 yrs. when it comes to doing my CV, will it just have to include everything i have done whilst being a midwife, or is it like a normal cv where you have to list all your previous employment and study whether it is linked to midwifery or not.

sorry for all the questions, but i have heard how awkward they can be and dont want anything to go wrong.

just remembered one final point. i plan to go and stay with my family in oz for a while, what address do i put on the ahpra paperwork, my uk one or my new oz one.

many thanks nicola

Needing somewhere to sound off because I'm so fed up and exasperated with my AHPRA application! I just feel like giving the whole thing up. AHPRA started assessing my application in March. They had an issue that some of my documents were in my former married name and some in my maiden name. Understandably they wanted to link the 2 surnames as they only name on the decree absolute was my married name, so I've sent them a certified copy of my marriage certificate. They also wanted proof (despite my nurse transcripts stating I was taught in English, a statement from my primary school stating I was taught there and a copy of my English GCE) from my primary school that I was 'taught in English'. So after much running around I got that sorted. They've now emailed me to say that they still need proof of my married name and now they've decided that they need proof that I've had training in aged care. I'm sure it must be in my transcript plus I've worked for 4 years in rehab. Does common sense prevail at all?? They've waited all this time to ask this and tomorrow I'm going off travelling for 3 months. Do they just come up with excuses not to give you a licence? Sorry for the rant! Cath x
