Validating a visa does not make you a resident. However, impressed that you got your drivers licence. Charlie:wink: Hi Charlie, You are right, but the problem here in Victoria (we are here on holdiay) is that you have to exchange licences within 6 months of the date of the issue of the visa or you have to re-take the driving test. With regard to the Medicard, if you apply before you officiially reside here, you loose a Lifecover protection, so it is better to wait until then and getting pivate cover within 6 months to get the Lifecover protection. If you dont get private cover within the 6 months after getting the Medicare card, you have to pay a very high premium yourself instead of Gov. funding this for you. fiz Posted January 29, 2011 Share Posted January 29, 2011 When I had my meds which I did roughly 12 months after the acknowledgment date, the clinic sent them off by courier and emailed me the tracking number. That was really useful as when I got a CO she asked for me to do the meds-I was able to email back with the date they were received in Oz etc which sorted that out really quickly. I sent my police certificate to my agent but if I were going it alone, I'd again use a courier-for the cost of £20 you then get peace of mind that it arrives in the right place. However though I got my police certificate done at the same time as my meds, I didn't post it until I got a CO. fiz Posted January 29, 2011 Share Posted January 29, 2011 Xray, HIV and urine test plus blood pressure, sight test, height and weight.For me (presumably the same for everyone?) I then saw a doctor. I didn't have to squat but he did a sort of full body check. As it had more than 6 months since I had had a mammogram he said I could either have a breast examination with a chaperone present or opt for another mammogram. I was also asked for dates of most recent smear test. Finally as he noticed an abdominal scar, I was asked to provide evidence that the operation (15 years ago!!) had been for a benign tumour and not for a malignant one. i presume that there is an equivalent set of checks for men!!Hope this helps Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest nickpearce Posted January 29, 2011 Share Posted January 29, 2011 This is my story.....Hope it helps $35000 each ....then $14000 for assurance of support bond (which we gave our son) held for 10 years....then standard visa fee (I think ours was about £2000)....then agent about £2000, if used..then medicals, blood checks, exrays, police checks. If anything shows up on med there will be specialist fees. My oh had serious illness x 2 so we had extra fees for consultants etc.,. They also found something on my lung, which, after 3 more exrays and specialists, turned out ok ....total cost to us was £89000. We cannot go now without selling our home....we only have just over a year left on the visa and could lose it all if the housing market doesnt pick up. We have reduced priced and are about to reduce to the bear minimum at the end of June. Good Luck I'm just being nosey, because if moving down under to be with our daughter is gonna cost all that, I dont think I'll bother. What do you get exactly for all that layout? Do I need to start going to keep fit classes?!! ............Hi Linday it was I who was asked to squat! - I am fit and active, tennis several times a week etc. I also take HALF a sleeping pill at night - and was asked WHY! - in attempting the squat I was unable to touch my ankles with my bum! - therefore my file was sent to Brisbane for further scrutiny! I also had to stand on one foot, hold arms out in front to check for shakiness. I did pass the medicals though!, sadly my daughter did not (mentally challenged) and we are still trying to decide which route to take now. Charlie As I spend time in both Australia on my CPV, and in England, I took out private medical cover in Oz to avoid the 70% loading that would have been applied if I delayed. I chose a company that allows me to suspend the premiums whilst outside of Oz. You need proof of departure and arrival dates on returning to Oz. Whilst some of it was quite thorough, I was surprised that my "fully-clothed" weight was recorded. I was looking forward to my resting pulse rate of 55 being recorded, but it wasn't. The medicals go direct from the medics to Sydney (so you don't attempt to "improve" them); the UK police checks come back to you and you need to send them to Perth. Hope that helps. From our point of view it's an investment in the right to live close to our Australian family and work here if we wish or need to. It is a hell of an investment, especially these days, so you do have to really want to be near them, or at least want to have the right to be near them without worrying that you will have to leave again one day. I have heard of some who "follow the book" whereas others are more sympathetic. Our doctor telephoned us the week before the examination and told us what to write on the forms "to avoid setting off any alarms". He was most helpful with some of the concerns we had. We were quite worried about the prospect of medicals in the early days of our visa application as I am sure a lot of other parent visa applicants are. don't worry too much.
