Just spoken to my mate who is the boss at DASFLEET, who said that there is scope for employing you there and the qualifacation aspect isn't too much to worry about, really i think he would be looking at the experance you have. He also said that there are a number of dealership in Canberra that would be looking as well, however he said to give him a shout when you come over

Hi,thanks for your help.

I have just sent you a Private Message.

Thanks

Hi Steve & Wendy, we have just lodged our visa app (on state sponsorship) after waiting almost 12 months to find out what was happening, when I could submit etc. Anyway it's gone now (!) Would you mind telling me how long it took you to get a case officer after lodgement? We've used a great agent so the paperwork is spot on. Many thanks Toops & Hubby

Hello,

We are one of the unfortunates who have ss for wa and have not been included on the WA smp list. So we have had to look at our back up plan which is going for Canberra. What i have seen and researched so far Canberra looks lovely. we have 2 small children so want somewhere family friendly. So i kinda just wanted to say hi, feeling a bit gutted about WA as we have family and friends there but need to move on and snap out of it. At the end of the day we want a better life for our kids which we feel australia can offer. So have to now be 110% on ACT and what lifestyle it can give us. I am just getting the paperwork together to apply for state sponsorship and am sure i may have a few questions over the next few days, hope you will be able to help.

Hiya Michelle

We are looking to move to Canberra in a few months' time. Though ACT isn't on the coast and is sometimes slated as too quiet, we're very much looking forward to living there, it's our one shot at getting a visa, so I ain't about to knock ACT - it's a once in a lifetime opportunity....bring it on, I say, lol

Good luck with your app, they're a nice bunch at ACT skilled migration unit:v_SPIN:

Hi good luck I bet its a nice feeling to have a co! Which part of Canberra are you going to? We don't mind quiet as long as we can do things during the day. We have young kids so are used to entertaining at home anyway. I must say what I have seen so far looks beautiful so we are really excited. It's Wa's loss ACT gain! I have only ever seen positive comments about ACT staff which is very reassuring.

Hi All those heading to Canberra,

Can I ask what your occupations are? Are any of you still to apply for SS for ACT?

I am still waiting on my VETASSESS and I'm soooo worried that my "limited" occupation will get filled before I get a chance to put my SS application in to ACT!!!!

Hi Michelle

We have our family in WA also but when we started the process our occupation was not in demand so we had a long hard think and did some research and decided we would give Canberra a shot. We too have a young family, baby no 2 due in Jan and from the research we have done on-line it does seem like a really family friendly place with lovely open spaces and plenty to do.

The guys at ACT are really good, email you back quickly and are really helpful. Good luck with your SS application.

Hi Claire

In hindsight we should have done the same, but because WA sponsored us for an Off-list place we were really chuffed and thought no we are meant to go there.....etc etc..... now another year down the line we are no further forward and we are all getting older!!! lol! From what i have seen of Canberra is does look great, we have two girls 5 and 7 and they are typical kids want to be outside, on the bikes, parks, skates etc. So it seems perfect. Someone said it was a bit quiet, but having young kids dosent make much difference as we dont get out much anyway. So home socialising suits us fine. I am getting really excited about Canberra but have to get throught the state sponsership again, so in for a stressfull couple of months!

Good luck with your visa, hope you get an early christmas present.

Has anyone been granted ss from ACT recently? Did you have the required cash in the bank or did you have to do the waiver thingy? If so do you mind sharing how much funds you were able to show and how you over came any shortfall?

Thanks so much. So good to see so many people getting their visas granted! Gives me hope it will eventually happen for us.

Hi Steve & Wendy and Toops, just had my visa granted, it looks like the ACT SS are flying though, our meds were posted on 22nd Dec and we thought we'd be caught up in all the Christmas post but we had our visa granted on 14th Jan, so only a month after the meds!

Wow - Congratulations!!! I think I had better get my A into G and auction the house off or get ready to rent it out.

We sent our meds online on 20th Decemeber, finalised 23rd, sent Police Checks to case officer last week.... hope we get a fast processing time.

Woo hoo Visa finally granted earlier this month, 2 years earlier than expected, even though it has been almost a 2 year process! I havent been on here in a while so would really like to make contacts of others in similar situations and hopefully meet up in Canberra, we have a 10 month old daughter and 3 year old son so will be looking at ways to entertain them play groups etc.. Hoping to be there this year before August. I think we will stay in serviced accom first, then rent.. then buy! I know the rental market is scarce to anyone any tips or recommendations on accommodation to stay when we first arrive would be much appreciated.

Goodbye rainy Manchester.. Hello sunny Canberra

Well done Ange, my wife goes to a mothers group (really it's just a group of friends whose kids are all the same age) and they go to a play group call paint and play, she also takes our son swimming at the local pool with fun swimming lessons.

Our son is 2 years old and is into everything going, if you need any advise of places to go then let me know.

P.S. there is a really good play area at brand depot that is free in the food court. There is a bigger play area in DFO but you have to pay for it, really good though and the kids will wear themselfs out

Just arrived in Canberra on my husbands 457 visa with our 10 year old son. Desperately looking for somewhere more longterm to live. So what's Queanbeyan really like to live in?? How about Jerrabomberra?

Thanks

Ice Cream

Jerrabomberra is fine if you dont mind living under the flight path to Canberra airport. Check it out here Airservices Australia - Aircraft Noise - WebTrak Locations

Bear in mind that Jerra is NSW and so if you want an ACT education for your son, you may not get one and NSW is going to charge you $4.5k pa for the privilege of educating him - cheaper than ACT though!

Queanbeyan is alright - has the reputation of being a bit "bogan" but quite a lot of people live there and work in ACT. It's actually closer to Civic than some of the far flung ACT suburbs. All depends on where your DH will be working really. You probably dont want Queanbeyan if he is going to be working in Macgregor.

Hi Ange,

Im on PIO cos im organising 176 for my sis. Ive been in Canberra 12 years. Ive a 1 and 3 year old. Canberra is absolutely brilliant for young families. You can sign up for free playgroups ACT Playgroups depending on where you decide to live. Other free things include storytime at the public libraries ACT Libraries - Storytimes which includes stories, songs and a craft activity afterwards. There are also fabulous playgrounds all around Canberra. Adventure playground at Yerrabi in Gungahlin,John Knight Memorial park in Belconnen and Black Mountain Pennisula. There are more big ones Im sure but these are ones I go to in my area. Most suburbs have smaller playgrounds too. Paint and Play is also great that I saw someone else mentioned. Its on at Ainslie shops and not sure if there is anywhere else.

For paid activities YMCA run great junior gym classes and Canberra City Gymnastics do gym classes for slightly older kids on proper gymnastics equipment.

I know all the names of places mean nothing now but they are all north of the lake. If you end up on that side then you can pull out this mail again.

Also, if you arrive in ozzie winter then bring winter woolies, its clear and bright but is cold in winter (i was caught out by that one!)

Cheers

Mags
