Hi.like you we are new to Canberra,we only arrived on Monday. We have friends here and we are staying with them while we are looking for a house rental and to buy a car! We are so lucky to have friends here to help and we have met new friends here in Canberra,who we have been chatting to on PIO. We are a family of 3 ,Myself (Steve 46) my Wife (Wendy 47) and our daughter,my step-daughter(Georgia 18). We have found everyone here to be very helpful and polite. Hi,we have John Mason and Britannia Shipping coming out 19th Sept to give us a updated quote. We had a couple of quotes in April for a 20ft Sole Use Container to Canberra and they all seem to be around £4500 + Insurance at 3% + AQIS( Australian Customs) Charges! We have had quotes from Pickfords,John Masons and Britannia for around £2500 For Half A 20ft Shared Container+Insurance+AQIS. Hope This Helps? Steve.Wendy + Georgia :biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

Hi Cal&Co. Thanks for all the info. We have just had Pickfords out today to give us a quote. We are thinking of maybe half a 20ft container now, so we are getting some different quotes from them, then decide what to take. We have had a few quotes in April 2011 and most came back with what you got from John Mason (we had a similar quote from them in April). I have to take all my work tools+ tool boxes (I know they have to be spotlessly clean), so not looking forward to the big clean up mission! :-( We hope to see you all there and sort out a meet up, when we get a little settled? Hi, Georgia is 18 Y/Old and I don't think your daughter is quite old enough to go out partying with her just yet. Lol. We have never been to OZ before and we are just so fed up with everything in the UK now,what with rising costs of Fuel,Food ,etc and house prices falling. We just want a better outdoor life for us all. I think it will be the best thing we could ever do to improve our lives. What trade did you get your visa on? I am a Mechanic and my wife (Wendy) Is Photographer,The visa's are granted on my Skill/Trade and we are just waiting to sort out a few things here in the UK so we can book our flights,etc and off we go! Hey,Fab post. Is that offer open to anyone from PIO? We are hoping to arrive in Sept or late Oct? House,etc to sort out 1st!! Did you ship over your house contents,etc as we are deciding what to ship? We have had a couple of quotes in April 2011 and they were coming back at around £4,300 for a 20ft Container+ Insurance+ The Australian Customs Fee, which people keep telling us The Customs Fee is a Standard $450 or close to it? I was told by our Case Officer in Feb 2011, that We Did Not Need A Visa Stamp, as it is Electronic (you will have to let them know, if you have a different/replacement passport from the one you had when your visa was granted). We have 176 SS Visa's. Hope this helps, if you are not sure, contact the office in Australia, or email your Case Officer (only use the email address from a old email you would have got, to tell you you had been granted your visa) that way you will know it's not a scam! Hi Sharon. We booked our Medicals when our Case Officer Advised us to. We applied for a 176 SS Visa and we had to have our Police Checks and Medicals done at the same time Our Medicals and Police Checks apparently last for 12 Months, so we have to visit Australia within that timescale to Validate our Visas !!! Hi Nick, I have had quotes of around £800-£900 to ship my tools+tool boxes to Australia? It takes quite a few months if you send them as groupage by sea. If you send them via air freight,it is far too expensive due to the weight+volume of the boxes. The best option would be to send some of your tools (find out what you need to start work with,while you wait for all the heavy tools+boxes to arrive) and send the essential tools via a air freight courier company. The tools have to be very clean (free from oil,grease or rust,etc) and don't forget to make a inventory and insure them! I have made a inventory and also taken pictures of my tool boxes and tools. I have had quotes from John Mason,Britannia and another company,but the quotes are simalar!! Hope this helps Steve,Wendy+Georgia :biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

Thank you for all your help. People on here are great at giving advise on a great many matters. I am a Light Vehicle Mechanic,but I did work for a couple of years on Trucks at a Volvo Main Dealer a few years ago. We have got our 176 SS Visa for Canberra,just got to sell the house before we can make the move!! I had a job and they even sorted out temp accomodation for me,until my wife and step-daughter could arrive. I had to turn the job down,due to the fact we hadn't sold our house (my wife also has to sell her business) so as we didn't know when this would happen,I had no other choice! It's complicated!! Hi,we don't want to rent our house out,we would rather sell(if we can)? I had a job offer and some accomadation,but had to email them and tell them I could't take the job, as I don't want to be in Canberra too long before my wife and step-daughter follow me out. We have to validate our visas by Jan 2012 at the latest (we have 176 SS visas).
