pob
The visa has been granted, we will leave in about two weeks. So I have been thinking, what will my last meal be? Is there anything you wished you had eaten as a last meal? I'm thinking a chedder cheese sandwich with pickle? Finish it off with a Fry's Turkish delight and a can of lilt? Roast beef and Yorkshire pud? I can make that over there, just as good. Bacon sandwich, with double bacon? What would your last meal be?
Steve Elliott
You are coming to Australia, you are not on death row!! While you have to search for British style bacon, Australia arguably the best beef in the world! As for Yorkshire pudding, bring your tried and tested recipe with you. Good luck with the trip and welcome to Australia!!!! 3
rammygirl
The only thing I sometimes crave is a crumbly Lancashire cheese! Then again there are plenty of other cheeses. Recently we were back in the Uk and friends we were staying with bought good English style fish, chips and mushy peas, I realised I didn’t really like it anymore. It was just too stodgy! Give me fish, crispy chips and a salad any day, especially Gummy Shark……… I also prefer the bacon now……….

Good luck with the trip and welcome to Australia!!!! Just those last few things to eat that I won't eat again for awhile. The beef thing makes me laugh a bit, every country thinks they have the best beef. In Texas they make a big deal over it, Scotland, Argentina. What I have seen is the best and worst of all countries, it's down to the farmer, you can get the best beef anywhere. Although I would like to go to Japan and try wagu fresh. I'm looking forward to a bit of kangeroo myself, nice and rare with the juices running into my salad, mmmmmmm. I tend to miss the things I would never normally eat. Fry's Turkish delight, pickled onion monster munch, space raiders. Never would I normally consider purchasing these items, but not having the oppurtunity to makes me wonder if I should buy a can of Irn Bru just to savour the taste? Even in the UK, it's really been made by Cadbury's for donkeys years. I'd go for something like Galaxy or some other slab chocolate where you really notice the difference in the chocolate. You can get British bacon in the supermarkets here, and decent cheddar cheese as well. I miss proper Leicester cheese. If you like British fish and chips then have that, because the fish and chips here is much crispier.

Jon the Hat
10 Months in and I can't say there is much I miss food wise, with the exception of the Waitrose / M&S ready meals, and that is just convenience . I have developed a taste for Australian middle bacon. We buy English Sausage company sausages most of the time, not really into beef sausages. If it were me I would be heading to my local pub for an afternoon of food, beer and family, which is exactly what we did.
Toots
A lot of people seem to miss a 'proper' curry. Have one of them before you leave.

Finding out I can buy it in woolworths brings me so much joy. I don't eat that much really, but decent ham in a quiche every so often makes everyone smile. It seems that I won't miss a thing from the UK. Bring on the sunshine!

Go to the pub. It's not the foodstuffs that you'll miss really. Some things will taste slightly different here, but if you're happy otherwise, small differences in food don't matter much. I think people who haven't settled tend to latch on to specific things (like food) that they miss, to try to explain their homesickness. However, most places in Australia don't have the pub culture you're used to, where the pub is the centre of the community. There are English and Irish pubs, of course, but it's not quite the same. So grab some of that while it's going.
Wa7
Wasn’t too fussed on the bacon when I got here ( or the sausagesI) have slowly got used to the bacon and cannot for the life of me find decent gammon. Have uour favourite Chippy takeaway or curry as you won’t have it for a few years I suppose.
tom1993
Those M&S £10 meal deals for 2 with a bottle of wine. I miss the old countryside pubs. If you’re a beer drinker, you might want to have a few European draught beers before you leave aswell, a lot of them aren’t served on tap here.

An English butcher might have it.
benj1980
Chips over here are rubbish, only a few places do them freshly cut (I'm in WA). I always request salt and vinegar hula hoops when people go to the UK. You're not coming to WA are you @pob ?!!!!!
Barnyrubble
Well we still haven't gone unconditional on our house so our move to oz is delayed - which has given us too long to think. What would I miss from UK? Lots. Where my sons live there are no lovely parks like here. Being able to walk in our countryside without fear of snakes. Friends (since primary), Availability and cheapness of food. The seasons (but definitely not Winter!), closeness to Europe for motorhoming, The architecture, Money!!! Which will hamper our lifestyle. The closeness of everything. The free bus pass. Not having to pay for any medical or medicine. But I will love being with my family especially on special occasions, being able to ride my bike more often and not having to keep making that arduous journey to see them, especially as we get even older (it's too physically draining). Barnyrubble
Oh and I would miss cosy character country pubs with a roaring log fire in the winter, character cottages, churches, cathedrals, castles, flowers too.

Best you start your own thread, as this has nothing to do with the thread title, and you have also commented about the above on another thread.’still here and still feel the pull’ it’s not recommended on PIO to ask the same question on multiple posts. No shortage of roaring log fires here with mulled wine, toasted marshmallows on a stick, roast chestnuts and not forgetting the snowfalls. Yes, I like winter in Australia! Sorry Sydney. 5 hours ago, Barnyrubble said: Oh and I would miss cosy character country pubs with a roaring log fire in the winter, character cottages, churches, cathedrals, castles, flowers too. Yes I would like to bring a pub with me, the place, not just a generic place to get drunk in, but a pub to socialise in and quaff ale. But that roaring log fire is there because it is bloody cold outside, windy and lashing down with rain, absolutly no fun on the walk back home. I'll take a Gin and tonic in my hammock in the sunshine any day over that. I've lived in character cottages, I have scars on my head fron the low beams and door ways, churches and cathederals creep me out, they were built to scare the poor and make them bow down to the power and the glory or to instill the fear of being dammed into hell, either way I only see them as a means to control and steal from the poor. I do like pretty flowers though, but I would have thought with all the sunshine in Australia, the flowers would be growing bigger, brighter and stronger. I know the fruit and veg is better. Yes the stuff you get in Woollworths and Coles is only a bit better than Tesco's or Sainsburys, but if you go to a decent fruit and veg market the selection is wonderful, the quality is enough to get any chef excited. We used to go to the veg market first and plan our meals around what ever veg was in season. Plum and peach season was great I never knew there were so many varietys! I never purchased a candy bar over there, why would you when there is such great fruit to satisfy your sweet tooth. The fish market was good, I never found the meat market though, I will have to look for that. I'm not just looking for a good butcher, but the place where the butcher gets his meat. I do enjoy coming home with a side of pork and surprising the wife, the last time I did it they threw in two heads free of charge. Braised pork jowl with truffle mash potato, went down very well. Although the terrines and pies I made with the heads and trotters were eaten very happily, untill I explained to the wife what she was acctually eating. So if anyone knows where the meat market is I would really appreciate knowing.
