  1. Would you be able to rent it out and move somewhere you might enjoy living more and rent somewhere there?
  2. So why have you joined this forum? Just to stir perhaps?
  3. Yes, there are plenty of community groups here for retired people. However, no longer a cheap option for buying property and i have a feeling that Libbye may have mentioned elsewhere that she doesn't drive. Definitely not a place to live without transport.
  4. Have you ever considered living in the hills? We've found people here are so much friendlier than in the suburbs and there are lots of good schools. The only downside is the longer trip into Perth but Joondalup is a similar distance.
  5. Hi Drumbeat, thanks for getting back to me. I had considered this but as we are moving from Australia to the UK one way I don't seem to qualify for annual policies as it stands. I have been recommended a few companies but some insurers so will explore those avenues and post if I have any luck. Oh, that's a shame. Mind you, I did travel a few times with mine uninsured. It was only after we'd been burgled (thank God I was wearing it) that I finally sorted out insurance.
  6. Have you considered annual insurance for your ring? The policy I have for mine covers it worldwide.
  7. No chance, there is still a lot of money in Perth and the resources industry is picking up again.
  8. You were both right, I was wondering why he wasn't deported in 1995. The letter from his granddaughter is a bit of a joke, he would have been in prison for more than half her life so not sure how he was looking after everybody
  9. He sounds a nasty piece of work, pity they didn't cancel his visa in 1995! Would he have been entitled to citizenship with all those criminal convictions - surely not?
  10. Accessing super depends on your preservation age: Date of birth Preservation age Before 1 July 1960 55 1 July 1960 – 30 June 1961 56 1 July 1961 – 30 June 1962 57 1 July 1962 – 30 June 1963 58 1 July 1963 – 30 June 1964 59 From 1 July 1964 60
  11. But isn't the reverse also true? The OP is leaving him for another country so he probably feels very low in her priorities.
  12. Hi, yes 1hr 40 minutes is doable. We have flights booked to Europe with Qatar in August and the transit time in Doha is 1hr 30mins. I believe when you search for flights they will only be displayed if there is adequate transit time between the two. You will be better to contact a travel agent to see if it's possible to book a mixed class fare or you might be able to find them through the Skyscanner website.
  13. It depends on the restaurant. If they have no alcohol licence you can usually BYO anything. Many restaurants will allow BYO wine only despite having a licence while others will state no BYO at all. I think it's great to have the option, my husband doesn't drink wine so paying corkage for one makes it cheaper for me to BYO where possible.
  14. I'll be in Tassie in 3 weeks, and I'll definitely be bringing a fleece! It's always cold there after Perth.
  15. I would never let my UK passport lapse but that's a personal thing for me - it once expired without me realising and I felt quite anxious until it was renewed. I guess it's just a safety net in case I needed to return to the UK for some reason.
  16. Perth does have a lot going for it. If you love getting out into the bush there's plenty of that and the Kimberley region is amazing. I'm just loving the heat less as I get older and ready to go elsewhere - but I do tend to be a bit restless by nature.
  17. This does surprise me, I shall go for a paddle next month and test it out.
  18. That's a beautiful photo, it looks like a painting. However, I remember having to trek to school in snow and biting cold wind and the romance disappears
  19. The UK has a mass of towns and villages all within close proximity of each other. However, you obviously think your opinion is right so carry on.
  20. Well I'd like to pop up to Broome every winter but the flights would cost upwards of $450 each, flying to Sydney is at least that plus a 4 hour flight.
  21. Beautiful photos, a trip to the Daintree and Port Douglas is on my bucket list.
  22. If she's an Australian citizen her parentage is irrelevant in relation to HECS. http://studyassist.gov.au/sites/studyassist/helppayingmyfees/hecs-help/pages/hecs-help-welcome#AmIEligible
  23. I do feel that staying in South Perth for a holiday can't really be compared to living here in one of the suburbs. I live in the hills which I love but both the train trip and driving to work in the CBD takes almost an hour in the mornings. I believe driving on the freeway from both North and South in peak times is a nightmare. The population has doubled since I've lived here and the infrastructure is very slow to keep up with growth. As for the remoteness, it's not an issue at first as there's new places to explore but once you've visited them a few times it does get very samey.
  24. Lovely, only a month until we fly over for a holiday.
