Hi

Sorry forum wouldn't let respond to your pm.

I spoke to the lateral recruitment office last night who told me they are just waiting for the medical info to be checked over by the submariner medics and I was to expect another few weeks delay.....

This they said is due to the lack of submariner medics

Ian

Hi Ian,

We had a 19 week wait from sending RAN meds til we got the TOS - agonising! :wacko:

We think this was due to the submariner medic being away on course.

Hope you get your TOS very soon

Sorry don't have an answer to your question about eye surgery but Good Luck with your application :biggrin:

Liz and Steve

Thanks Liz and Steve :smile:

Lee,

I am half way through the medicals for RN to RAN SM transfer. This is a copy of the RAN eye medical dit I got:

d. Ophthalmologist review is required for some applicants; referral is necessary in the following circumstances;

- All aircrew applicants, seaman officers ( including diving and submariner officers);

- All applicants who fail to reach visual acuity aspects of the MVR1. See Table 2 for Visual Guidelines;

- All applicants who wear contact lenses;

- Applicants who have had corneal surgery/injury, refractive surgery or amblyopia;

- Applicants who are over the age of 45 years with particular emphasis on detection of raised intraocular pressure and the presence of presbyopia; and

- Where clinical indications for specialist advice exist.

Not sure if this helps. I just needed a standard eyetest.

Regards,

John.

Thanks for the info John, I have sent an email off to the recruitment officer who is going to run my query by the MO when he returns from leave.

Does anybody know of how your housing entitlement is worked out with DHA?

I have been told that i won't have access to the availbale houses until i arrive (which seems crazy!)

I have a wife and three children, what size house am i allowed?

How many houses can you choose from?

I will be moving to WA what are the housing standards like?

Cheers, Ian

Have a look at the ORFIS website. It has all the information on what housing you are entitled to and other interesting stuff as well.

Has anyone who had their medicals done by the RN had to pay?

I may have to pay for the blood tests required for the RAN medical paperwork. I know I could probably claim this back from the RAN if all goes well but this still feels wrong. I am not leaving the RN early and have 18 months left to do before completion of my 22 years. I am in my last 2 years and therefore entitled to some help with resettlement etc. Interested to know if anyone was charged for this.....

I had mine done by Dr Andrews and he mention about a charge but I didnt pay anything. There is a way round the HIV blood test cost aswell. The tooth doctor:notworthy: wasnt to happy about doing the dental bit but lucky I was out of date so she agreed if it didnt cause her much extra work which in didnt two signatures if i remember correctly.

I've been invited back up to the Sickbay to discuss charges for the tests. Not too happy really. After 20+ years I've needed nothing from the RN medical wise. As for the dental stuff I am hoping copies of all my dental docs will do. I am up to date treatment wise.

Cheers,

John.

We had all ours done private,,, the whole family have to have blood test done if u have kids over the age of 15 they have to HIV test aswell.

You get every penny back from the RAN when u get here.

Keep ur receipts for everything U do if its to do with Australia they will give u all the money back.. :biggrin:

Hi Ian,

I've been on holiday so don't know if you've had a full reply yet so I'll jump in with my experience!

I presume you've registered with DHA and filled out their form with a copy of your posting signal or employment offer. Once you've done that you shopuld be able to see available houses and once you can see them, reserve one.

I don't know why they said wait until you get there as its in the Governments interest to get you into a house as they have to pay for an expensive Apartment hotel.

Ask others already there and they say its a nightmare finding a private rental. This is largely due to the over inflated house prices in Oz and renting is cheaper than buying so you can see where the demand is coming from!

I've just reserved one after being offered about 4, I'm going 6th June.

Once reserved DHA need a date from OAT to 'lock down' the house, who by now should have sent an introductory email, they basically sort out your house search hire car (not entitled if you have a DHA house allocated) and the temp accom when you land (yet more forms to fill in)

I've rang OAT (tesco £5 calling card - lasts ages, where were these back in the day?) and the date was informally arranged by agreeing that we'd have a few days to settle then inspect the property and move in the following day with them renting me some furniture etc until mine arrived.

The standard of house goes according to your rank, as a PO with 2 kids I'm entitled to a 3 bed house, but they don't make many 3 beds so I've only been offered 4 bed, 2 bathroom ones (called a 4+2)

Its a typical home that wouldn't look out of place in the USA, quite new as the DHA won't touch old ones, in a nice area.

If you go to Sydney the competition for housing is even fiercer so can end up in less popular areas, but you shouldn't have any probs in Perth, just do your research.

Cheers

Hi Just read this, and some things are not set in stone, we couldnot get on homefinder till we got to Australia not many people can.

It does not go on ur rank to what house u get I have 2 and half ringer livihg next door to me in a 4 bed with 2 kids, and a captain in a 3 bed with no kids, it all depends what they have at the time.

U do not have to rent furniture when u get here it is provided by DHE.

I would strongly advice anyone coming out here to look around b4 u except a place,

1 what if you dont like the area

2 what if the schools are no good

3 Once u are in the these houses it is very very hard to move.

The reason I say this I have had a few friends that have gone through this.

Take a good look at the area u going to live in, U have 5 weeks to look for a house d

so whats the rush.

This is ur new life please think very hard b4 locking down a house and moving into it b4 u have checked out the area, what might be good for someone u know may not be right for you.

Like u said in Stdney it is harder and the houses are smaller in the better areas. Just remember u spend a lot of time living outside in Australia, my house is small than the 1 had in the Uk, but weather is better and I live right on top of the beach, So I dont really need a big house.

Hope this helps :biggrin:

Thanks Anita but after extensive research on this and other sites, private renting looks a complete nightmare with loads of people all going for the same house, lack of rental history because we are from UK, having to pay over the odds to sway the owners decision, frequent inspections etc.

Naturally I investigated the house by google earthing it, close to beach, lake, schools shops, asked around friends already there and they said it was a great little area so I'm set.

Fair enough if someone else did no research and had no-one in Perth to check it out then more fool them.

Admittedly I also wanted an ocean view, massive swimming pool and acres to ride my polo ponies on but until the house prices go down I'll put that dream on hold.

I spent a few years on ships parked opposite St. Budeaux and in HMS Sultan looking out over the fine married patches there so the bar has been set lol.

Don'y forget they aren't prisons - only houses, I'm sure f I bought my own house I could get out quite easily or change bases then switch back again.

Cheers

It`s swings and roundabouts - if you go private rent you theoretically have more choice in the house and area but you rental inspections every few months and you are at the mercy of the rental agents/ owners for repairs etc. Private rentals are in demand like Ironduke said you have to compete for the house you want and prove you are the better option. MQ`s are in demand here in Perth so you may be limited as to your choice of area at the time you want to move - in an ideal world you would want to be on the ground first and looking round different areas (research and google are good but it`s suprising the amount of people who move to an area they`ve researched and find it`s not for them). Ultimately you could wait til you are here and due to lack of MQ`s at that time still not get the area you wanted.

One thing I can say though that having lived in MQ`s in Gosport before we moved, the ones over here bear no resemblance in any way shape of form - I know which I`d prefer ( but then for an owner to rent their house through Def Housing here they have to be under a certain age (15 yrs I think) though if there is a shortage of housing for rent in an area they will take older houses so long as they are in good condition.

Oh and by the way when they talk about the MQl coming with furniure for the first few weeks until your stuff arrives they are talking about it coming from private furniture rental companies - none of the awful furniture that used to be provided with MQ`s back in UK (I can remember my first MQ in Rosyth many, many years ago and sitting on very uncomfortable khaki/camouflage print chairs :twitcy:)

You will be able to buy a house in Perth half the price there to Sydney. So u can live the dream. Most of my friends in Perth now own there houses

Thanks Ermintrudemcmoo

that hat I was trying to say, Im in DHE in Sydney and Im so glad we couldnt get on homefinder untill we got here.

Im glad I didnt listen to people that went to a different area to us, they have been there 2 and half years the same us and have been trying to move for the last 2 years and cant. like I said b4 just because ur mate likes it there doesnt mean u will, if u have kids and they dont like it and have to move schools again its a bigger picture, Google doesnt tell a lot about anything.

We couldnt aford to go private for decent house, in this area its a 1000 dollars a week, so there was no chance of that happening.

All Im saying Ironduke please please wait u have 5 weeks to have a good look around, make the most of that.

Hi Neil the rent for MQ is about $180 dollars a week, its taken out of ur wages every 2 weeks as u get paid every 2 weeks here.

From what I know the water rates are in with that. you do not pay rates so thats a bonus.

My gas bill is about $120 every 3 months. and my leccy is 500 dollars every 3 months.

I dont really know what its like in Perth a friend of mine said that eletric is more expensive in Perth but I really dont know for sure :biggrin::biggrin:

Can anyone gives us a dit on the RAN pension?

Does time served in the RN count towards? When does it start to pay and what is the min number of years?

I will be in receipt of my RN pension already after 22 years done. Does this change anything?

Many thanks. :yellow_guy_crazy_ty

Friend of mine is now serving with the RAN. The Oz Govt will contribute towards your pension at a rate that takes into account your time served in the RN, even if you are now drawing your RN pension, but obviously the amount you can build up in the scheme is limited by the amount of time you can serve - but I think you can serve to 65.
