Rules must have changed then as I get both my pension and Rental income tax free from the UK. We use direct line too, with everything being online these days it is so easy to keep tabs on. Mortgage advice must be standard, we were told 3 years then onto buy to let which is a bit of a pain as we are on a really good mortgage rate at the moment....but we are not getting charged 0.5 % so that is a bonus, we are with a BS though

Have heard of a few people having snags with WFTC and Child benefit, still getting paid after they have left the UK and on the bright side of all those direct debits we did get a few nice rebates when it was all sorted. Tax advice is fantastic....soooo many things you can claim for and fingers crossed a nice little tax rebate at the end of it all!

Air freight

Anybody whose done the move have any top tips for what to bring/wish you had brought?

We get 16 boxes so thats quite a bit!

Cheers

I think this is a hard one, it all depends on what u use the most and what U think are the most inportant to you.

We packed things like kitchen stuff, all the our quilts with covers on (they can be washed when they get here) it was nice to have our own bedding, we also packed computers, but most people have laptops now days. Playstations or the wii my kids where glad of that and dont forget the games, dvd player and a stereo, also get loads of energy saving lights to bring they are not so cheap here.

Once u start packing 16 boxes is not that many, we also packed a lot of clothes.

Sorry cant be of much help just hard to remember the things that we bought with us..

Thanks Anita, shame we can't get the bikes in as they'd be used straight away!

I just received all my paper work back ref the arrival of my stuff and by the luck of uck it all gets to Australia on the 16 th and we arrive on the 13 th will have to wait up to 2 weeks for sea freight and 7 days for the air freight but she said it shoul only take a few days for the lot so living with the inlays for a while seems to have paid of a wee bit.

Hi, we didn't take out any additional insurance, the one that came with pickfords and the RAN was enough, just go through the paperwork carefully and make sure you list everything. Put your electronic stuff (computers etc) in the electrical and mechanical derangement box and any valuable china/ glassware in the other one (can't remember the name now). Make sure you list all your "sets" of anything. Fairly sure we had £60k from the RAN to cover the household items. We had 2 computers that didn't work on arrival and pickfords paid for the survey and the cost that we put down on the insurance form.

Natalie Chee was very very helpful in all this stage, she also proof read the form before I formally submitted it. I made sure I used every penny on the form !!! We thought we had enough on that to cover what we wanted covering.

The waiting is driving us nuts

Ugghhhh, been there, done that . . . . . . . and it must be the longest wait for anything EVER!!! It's not like you're waiting for something small - it's a major life change for you and your family :wacko:

We didn't even want to tell people that we might be going to Oz, in case it didn't work out and we looked like idiots. I got sick of the "if we go to Oz. . . ." conversations.

You get the TOS and feel so pleased and then your brain makes you worry about the visa approval :arghh:

Hang in there, hopefully it won't be too much longer and you'll be planning your move :biggrin:

Congrats! Now scan it as a few organisations will require a copy, get one off to the RAN desk telling them its been granted as they will then inform their embassy in London to start the process, most will accept a scanned copy but you'll need a couple of printed ones for customs etc.

Cheers

Thanks Liz and Steve,

we have told people that we are hoping to go, but I think people think its one of our fads, as we keep saying we are waiting for TOS and its been about 8mths. Now we are worrying that we won't get the TOS, I hope they would let us know! Aaaragh!!!!

You must be so excited to be going in Aug, hope everything is going smoothly for you and good luck

Hi all this is my cherry post so be gentle ;)

Currently serving in the RN but looking to transfer to the RAN a couple of years once I have completed my ROS. In the meantime I was looking at having intraocular eye surgery (IOL) to rid myself of specs/contacts and was wondering if anyone knew whether or not this would have any kind of negative impact on a future application?

thanks, Lee

Lee,

I am half way through the medicals for RN to RAN SM transfer. This is a copy of the RAN eye medical dit I got:

d. Ophthalmologist review is required for some applicants; referral is necessary in the following circumstances;

- All aircrew applicants, seaman officers ( including diving and submariner officers);

- All applicants who fail to reach visual acuity aspects of the MVR1. See Table 2 for Visual Guidelines;

- All applicants who wear contact lenses;

- Applicants who have had corneal surgery/injury, refractive surgery or amblyopia;

- Applicants who are over the age of 45 years with particular emphasis on detection of raised intraocular pressure and the presence of presbyopia; and

- Where clinical indications for specialist advice exist.

Not sure if this helps. I just needed a standard eyetest.

Regards,

John.

Does anybody know of how your housing entitlement is worked out with DHA?

I have been told that i won't have access to the availbale houses until i arrive (which seems crazy!)

I have a wife and three children, what size house am i allowed?

How many houses can you choose from?

I will be moving to WA what are the housing standards like?

Cheers, Ian

Hi Ian if you are moving to WA u will be able to get a 4 bed house, there are loads over there.

Once u get on home finder you will be able to see whats there, U lock one down, look at it and if you dont like it turn it down,. Then u go back and look again until u find the house u want.

Its not crazy really u dont know the areas, and its best to have a good look around when u get there and decide then. We didnt get to look until we got to Sydney and was very glad, we would have just gone for the big house and not the right area.

Hope this helps, and by the way most of the houses are large in Perth :biggrin:

Hi

Sorry forum wouldn't let respond to your pm.

I spoke to the lateral recruitment office last night who told me they are just waiting for the medical info to be checked over by the submariner medics and I was to expect another few weeks delay.....

This they said is due to the lack of submariner medics

Ian
