  1. Hi all, I have seen an increase in number of posts regarding teaching in Australia, so i'd thought I would give as much info as I can. NSW: When you arrive in Australia you need to get a working with children check (WWCC), these can only be applied for in NSW. You need to go to a NSW service centre, take your passport and $88.00 with you and then they will email it to you. They say it takes approx. 2 weeks but I received mine in about 1 hour. Once you have this you can apply for NSW teaching registration (you can apply for teacher registration beforehand but you will need the WWCC before they sign you off). In NSW the registration will tell you what you can teach. They essentially look at your degree to determine the subject areas you are qualified in, if the subject is not on there you cannot teach it (private schools are different as its up to them what you teach). Once you have registration you need to apply to teach in NSW (https://www.teach.nsw.edu.au/) if they are interested in you, they will bring you in for an interview after obtaining a national police check (Australia). This process usually takes about a month. The interview places are in Parramatta if located in Sydney but they do also have regional offices but bear in mind the interviews are less frequent. If you're successful you can then apply for jobs (https://www.teach.nsw.edu.au/find-teaching-jobs/jobfeed) every wednesday the jobsfeed updates. If you don't have PR (or provisional such as 491) then you can only apply for temporary jobs. Find a job you like and submit an EOI. Most jobs come up in Oct - Dec ready for the new academic year, however, you can find some closer to the end of terms. NSW works on a point system. You gain points each year of service. Points depend on where your school is, Sydney has 1 points per year, whereas the most remote has 7. It isn't easy to get a job in Sydney in a public school if your coming from overseas. Junior School starts at Year 7 and Senior is Years 11-12. Senior classes are referred to as stage 6, make sure you know your subject knowledge as it will be tested. Pupils who take a pathway to university take something called the ATAR. The ATAR is on a percentile basis and goes up to 99.95. Unlike the UK there is only ONE external exam at the end of year 12 (which makes up 50% of the senior subject). All other assessments are internal but externally moderated. QLD: Much easier process. You apply here (https://teach.qld.gov.au/apply-to-teach/submit-your-application) In QLD the process is different, the "offices" place you in a school. Again, Brisbane is a very competitive place to get into and if your looking at state schools you may have to go out of the city. Independent state schools in Brisbane operate on the system of "we have greater control over recruitment" so you can apply to these schools directly. Like NSW, there are also many private schools. QLD also works on a point system. You gain points each year of service. Points depend on where your school is, Sydney has 1 points per year, whereas the most remote has 7. It isn't easy to get a job in Brisbane in a public school if your coming from overseas - but not impossible. Queensland college of teachers don't specify what you "can teach", that is up toy uo to discuss with the head of the school. QLD school holidays are 1 week before NSW, VIC, SA and WA - so bear that in mind if you are visiting family in other states, however, flights are cheaper when pupils in other states are in school. VIC: First you need to apply for your teaching registration with Victoria, this is the longest process out of any of the other states, so get on that one quickly. You need to register here and look for jobs (https://my.vit.vic.edu.au/Teachers/Account.aspx/SignIn?ReturnUrl=%2fTeachers%2fHome.aspx%2fIndex) You need to look for the roles you wish to apply and write a cover letter addressing their standards. The standards change so get around 3 - 4 different cover letters so you can just amend slightly before sending it off. Now when you find a job and get offered it in victoria, other individuals can appeal the rejection they got. They cannot formally give you the job until any appeals have been sorted. Individuals have 1 month to appeal and if the appeal does occur it can take a few weeks. Start early in VIC - it takes AGES!! Junior School starts at Year 7 and Senior is Years 11-12. In general, QLD earns more than the other states and if you go regional or rural you can incentive packages to accommodate this. I won't delve too much into this but just know you will earn A LOT more than the UK. The lifestyle is great Actual work: MUCH more relaxed than the UK. Hours are generally 8:15 - 2:45. QLD and NT work slightly less due to the heat (it gets very hot). If your teaching senior then you need to write the internal assessments and they need to get moderated by the Education Dept (whichever GOVT you're working in) but schools have something called "clusters" where essentially schools work together so don't worry. Australia is an amazing place to work and live - enjoy every minute I hope I have helped, however, feel free to post here and i'll do my best to answer all your questions.
  2. You’ve stated you want to go 40kms outside of Sydney and that’s regional anyway! It’s not a bad visa to go for
  3. NSW have just launched a “commerce” teaching area so you’ll be fine there! 40kms out of the city.. you’ll get anything you desire. I used to work in public schools in NSW. Drop me a message if you need anything
  4. You don’t have any issues with your qualifications mate! Your wife may get rejected but as you’ll be primary applicant it shouldn’t be an issue! What visa you applying for?
  5. Also with 482 it’s 3 years with same employer and not 2 like 457
  6. If you’re made redundant it would be from the day the employment ceased. Sorry to hear, it’s not easy finding a sponsor
  7. Ouch! Sorry to hear about this. To be honest they don’t accept GTP or SCITT and therefore they’ll most likely always reject you. You can appear but it’s the same price to appeal as it is to put another application in and I doubt there is any point. What visa you currently on? 482?
  8. In Australia you’re expected to teach TWO subject areas. So I teach chemistry and maths for example. What would your husband’s second be? It literally can be anything! My colleague does history and art
  9. I have found the opposite with QLD. When I was looking for a new job in QLD, I got offered 4 jobs in the first day! What is your subject area?
  10. Hey Ric and Dean, You’ll definitely get an invite with Secondary School Teacher with that many points. Ric - you’ll probably get invited for 491 in a much quicker time frame. I’d just go with that if I was you, quicker process. I put my EOI in yesterday but I’m onshore, I already teach in QLD on a temporary visa. So any questions about teaching here or the process, don’t hesitate to contact me. AITSL - it doesn’t come in a printable format unfortunately, you have to wait until it comes by post. If your overseas this can take another 3 weeks. Queensland college of teachers - they don’t take long at all. Probably 2 weeks after submitting everything. Call them they’re pretty good (if your living in UK then use Skype). They won’t pick up your EOI until you’ve got your registration so be mindful of that. Cheers gents
  11. You can’t submit an EOI until your skills assessment is back
  12. 12 weeks? Mine took just shy of 2 weeks. Get on it
  13. Hi all, The Queensland 491/190 states that "provide evidence of full-time post-qualification employment (minimum of 35 hours per week)" I work full time as a teacher for the Department of Education. Our contracts state 25 hours a week (this doesn't include breaks etc). We obviously work a lot more but we only get "paid" for 25 hours a week. NSW is the same (didn't check the other states). Would this be accepted? Cheers
  14. Yeah that’ll count as long as it was AFTER your qualification (paid employment). Have you done your skills assessment yet?
  15. Have you done your skills assessment yet? AITSL take ages... it states 10 weeks, but expect it to be more like 13-14 weeks. Mine took 13 and so did others I know of
  16. Thank you I would never not declare it because I know the consequences of not doing so. I just don’t understand how it could be “resolved” though as I don’t live in the country anymore and I didn’t even know about it until I requested another PCC. Thanks
  17. Thank you Mr. Russell, In your expertise, do you "think" it would cause an issue? Thank you
  18. Thanks for the advice... is yours a case of defamation too? I have no idea at this point. I have instructed a lawyer in Thailand so get details of my police report. I don’t want to state no on my application and down the line it turns out I was Convicted in absence and I have to backtrack to immigration. This is all so stressful.
  19. Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone could provide me with some initial advice (I will be asking a MARA agent but wanted some advice first). I am currently on a 482 visa, however, I am applying for a 190 visa. I am just pre-empting the paperwork I will need in the near future (Police checks/Medical test). I lived in Thailand for a few years and left in June of this year to come to Australia. I had a police check when applying for my 482 check and it's dated 29 March 2019. Just after I left Thailand. My former boss decided to sue 3 of my colleagues and myself for defamation. Apparently the claim was we told pupils to go to another school to obtain a better education (never said that, nor did my colleagues). I contacted my former employer a few days ago to which the reply was "we can do what we want, this is Thailand". Unfortunately defamation is a criminal offence in Thailand (most countries it's civil) and therefore probably will show up on my new police check. I am wondering, will I fail the character test? I've never done anything wrong and wouldn't even know that I got sued unless I needed a new PCC check. Thanks in advance
  20. Hi all, I follow this forum religiously and the more I read the more I am getting myself confused and overwhelmed. I am a Secondary School Teacher (Chemistry/Science) and I live in QLD on a 482 sponsored visa. I have got my AITSL assessment back and am now looking to applying for either the 189/190/491 visa (I want to get out of the whole employer sponsored visa for added security). I have my contract in QLD until 2022 and currently work and reside in a regional area (Central QLD) My points are as follows: 30 for Age (I turn 33 in October 2020) 20 for English (Got 79+ in PTE) 15 for Bachelors Degree 5 for Partner's English (come 16th Nov) = 70 (189) =75 (190) =85 (491) In June 2020 I will have an extra 5 for working in Australia for 1 year, however, in Oct 2020 I drop down to 25 points. My partner is in ICT but does not currently work as he is completing a post grad (distance with a UK university). I am guessing there is no chance of getting 189. So do I apply for 190 AND 491 or just go straight for 491? Will I even get 190 based on my info? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
  21. Why not try for a 190 or even 482 visa to get your foot in the door?
  22. I’m already on a 482 visa. Mine was granted 36 hours after submission!! Super fast
  23. I've recently done my skills test and my friend did at the same time. I did my PGCE through a University and my friend did it with a University along a SCITT. I got mine approved and his was rejected. I'm so sorry to tell you this, but didn't want you spending all that money
  24. Hi all, I am currently on a 482 Visa (secondary teacher) and my current employer wants to get me on a 186 visa. I reached out to a migrating agent who (after I paid a consultation fee) told me that a 482 visa can only result in a 187 visa (or any new regional visa). I work and live in a Metropolitan postcode so I am a bit worried now. However, I did some research and I can't find the information to prove this? I am happy to go with a migrating agent - but don't have much confidence in the inidivudals who told me this? Any advice is greatly appreciated
