  1. No really, how are they going to pay for all that?
  2. Two incidents witnessed out of the office window already this morning. I think the mental health issue is worse than the homeless one, bad as that is.
  3. Had our nieces for a sleepover last Friday (9 & 12). Phones never left their hands. Above all else, it looks absolutely crap being a kid these days. Talk about boring. The older one was watching a youtube vid of someone else playing an online game (Minecraft). Best years of your life haha
  4. Good on you, great effort. To me, and I might just be missing something, Perth seems short on initiatives for the homeless; partly because some people seem to be reluctant to admit that the problem exists. But, it's bad. As is the mental health thing. There are a lot of people walking around at any time, right now, who need help. Doesn't seem to be forthcoming though. I saw a guy attack 3 people from my office window yesterday, not seriously thankfully.
  5. I've worked in the CBD for a good few years, by the new library, and just wondered if anyone else was observing what I do on a daily basis: 1. The amount of homeless people sky-rocketing. 2. The absolute ticking time-bomb that is Perth's mental health problem. The amount of affected people is unreal, I see episodes every single day on my way back-and-to the train station. Scary business.
  6. OP, I'm in the same boat as you, been here 10+ years, never got citizenship, never really been sold on the benefits. I will do it at some point though I think. The day when I murder someone at work grows closer and it would be nice to serve my sentence over here. Mind you, you probably don't get multiple games consoles like you do in UK jails so I might leave it.
  7. Yeah we have Terrarium. Our Kodi went a bit crap but Terrarium is fine.
  8. Well put. Last time I tried a couple of UK IPs, they didn't work. I'm sure I could find one that did but the problem is watching a TV program becomes an exercise in technical support. That's fine for some people but not all (e.g. my wife).
  9. Will not be of much use rather than not work, should have said.
  10. I do feel sorry for your parents. We moved to Australia to follow the wife's family (all of them) not to chase a dream or a better lifestyle. Over the course of 5 or 6 years, her Mum, 3 sisters, brother and cousins all moved here. The last to move was her youngest sister who lived with us for the 6 months immediately prior to emigrating, with her young baby. Their leaving was totally akin to a death in the family and no amount of emails or Skypes makes up for it. I'm not saying that people shouldn't emigrate but they should recognise that, in doing so, whilst plenty of new doors might open, some existing ones might be closed for ever, or at least never be the same again. I know I can't stay in Oz forever, my Mum is 70 and will need me at some point. So, I'll have to pack up and go back. Just the way it is, might come back after the worst, might not. Am sure some guilt will present itself along the way.
  11. I use Nord VPN although I've read recently that use of VPNs to mask the viewer's location will not work for much longer as broadcasting companies plan to just block access where they recognise a VPN is in play. Might happen, might not but the BBC in particular was mentioned.
  12. Don't get a long-term rental without seeing it in person, fraught with danger. Get the company to sort a short-term let whilst you look for a proper rental when you're here.
  13. I have an Android box and had a subscription to Hd Subs, now called Press Play I think. About $300 for the year, all terrestrial and satellite channels, with 7-day catch-up. The live TV element is pointless because of the time difference but the catch-up feature was ok. That said, I've not renewed, didn't seem to get used much once the novelty wore off.
  14. Didn't suffer from HF in the UK but I do here. My chest was bad for a couple of months when we first moved over, needed an inhaler. Just different air/pollen I guess.

    Aussie weather

I like those days when it's fine and sunny daytime and cool at night, sleep really well. Perth will get a good few of these coming up.
  16. Other places in Australia really, diverse place, plenty of options. Been Bali 6 times in our 11 years, probably won't go again, don't really have an interest in Asia per se. And further afield is usually mega-bucks.

    Outside dogs

Our dogs sleep on our bed, usually cuddling the Mrs. The thought of them being outside at night is horrible. When I go to bed, I just have to find some spare space to settle, wherever it is. I'm thinking of getting myself a dog basket.
  18. Migrants who move to Australia have money.
  19. Albany and Esperance are nice places but not ideal for most work types. If you are a bricky or a nurse, I guess you'd be OK. But, for a lot of job types, it might be a struggle.
  20. As a tenant you defo pay leccy and gas.
  21. Isn't water rates and usage combined now?
  22. These days, we have FTTP and get about 60mbps. That said, when we were on ADSL, it was shocking, we couldn't stream movies. Some nights were <5mbps.
  23. I prefer my work trips to Adelaide over Sydney, once you've got the tourist stuff out of the way.
  24. Why does GB split countries in this but not in the Olympics?
  25. Just on the weather thing, I've been to Melbourne about 10 times and 9 times the weather was crap. The other time it was 46 degrees.
