  1. Try http://www.currencyfair.com. I have yet to get a better and more efficient service once you have it set up
  2. SBS is free to air. We have it..............
  3. You can also set up with NAB. I found them very good and great to help if you have to ring. No charges also which is good. Ubank good for savings etc but you must be in the country to set that up
  4. "owned and used" the car i think is the correct phrase............and if you have not.......... you face customs who could in theory take the car I imagine. In my opinion not worth the risk unless you have money to burn.
  5. Just got insured with NRMA cheapest quote all round and great customer service so far. Might be different when/if i have to make a clam. But they won the quote by a mile. All others RAC, Suncorp were giving crazy quotes....Hope this helps......

    RRV

We got our RRV after 24 years so there is always hope and if your daughter is living there then there might be the chance. Try to build up a list of compelling and compassionate reasons as to why you did not return in that time and why you should now be allowed to return
  7. Were in same situation as you re the RRV and my wife applied first and got hers and then i applied and got mine on the same basis As mentioned above Do not let your wife travel on a Tourist visa as this will cancel any other Visa that was issued Do not know where you stand with the baby
  8. I presume you mean import it one way, you must be on a Permanent Resident visa dont know much about the visas you mention but dont think they qualify You must be planning on staying here indefinitely as a PR Have a read below http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/vehicles/imports/import_options/pis.aspx
  9. Second the shortage of good rentals in Noosaville area. Had to pay 540 for a nice 2 bed/bath/DLUG garage as we had to get a place after two weeks as we have a container arriving with some stuff and paying short term was getting expensive. Will look for a cheaper place in 6 months once we are a little more organized and settled
  10. The only tax is on any/the interest "earned" on your savings once you deposit it in the bank in Aus, not on the intital deposit as mentioned in the previous posts and that tax seems to be 10% which after Ireland is very acceptable
  11. AVG free version should do you fine. plenty of people use it as a main AV solutioin
  12. Hi ...in a very similar situation to to yourselves we left over 20 years ago and have recently been given a RRV valid for 12 months. We did have a PR visa originally. We are now heading back after 20 years so anything is possible. Just apply when you need it and i imagine you should get the 12 month option. You will need to show "compelling and compassionate reasons" as to why you had not returned to Aus in the time you were away ...I think you have them judging from your post....Best of luck
  13. 10 years is correct and it is also means tested

  17. She will need to prove "Compelling and Compassionate" reasons as to why she did not return and why she should be allowed to return. I think you have all of them and more to spare. Should not worry too much and just get applying to get back again. We got our RRV after 25 years and are heading back in March.
  18. Heading over to Sunshine Coast from Ireland on the 17th March, vrey patriotic i know but i like the symbolism, jumping ship on our national day and all that, would love to be there on the 8th but have a good day all of you guys
  19. Cant help on the job front but couldn't resist this little parting shot at OUR bankers He He He  come to Ireland........... we pay Bankers great money here and you get huge bonuses, expected to play loads of golf and you are not even required to do a good job. AND if you screw over the Banks and the Public and leave them bust we'll even let you come back and have another go at it in case you didn't get it right the first time........and we'll pay you just as much the second time around Seriously.......dont come........you're heading in the right direction and we are also heading to the Sunshine Coast....somewhere.... in March. Cant wait and hope the bankers over there are a little better than our lot have proven to be. Best of luck with your plans i'm sure it will all work out for you

    Anaphylactic Shock

Hi PQ Sorry to hear about your problems. As an Ex. Chef I can sympathise with your son but Cheffing is a pretty hectic and dangerous place to be if you are not in the full of your health. His employer must be made fully aware of all issues and if his docs have warned against this then not sure if there is any choice. He needs to be fair on his fellow staff also. Maybe he could look into specialising in Pastry or something like that and approach some of the big hotels to get a place in a decent Pastry Department as in this way he could avoid the Shellfish side of things and get proper training in this department. In big hotels a Pastry Department would be separate from the main kitchen usually. This way you can show you are supporting him in his career choice but also showing the care needed. He might need to go somewhere else for this not sure what is available in Cairns or if Brisbane etc would offer better prospects especially for education. But also bigger hotels. Dont want to scare you or anything but i'm sure you are aware of the risks anyway but there was an incident in Ireland where a girl lost her life recently because she was not carrying her epipen and the Chemist would not issue one to her without a prescription and she died on the way to the hospital on the side of the street. Please get your son to carry his epipen all the time, maybe show him the article to indicate to him what can happen. A search should find it or let me know and i can locate it for you. I think he needs to be shown what the outcome of not being prepared could be. No one should have to go through that. Back to his career choice. He needs to get out of small restaurants where the risk is too great to come in contact with Seafood. If he wants to get on in Catering he needs to get properly trained or he will get nowhere and earn nothing decent (generally speaking). Big hotels have the budget and resources to help staff get the training they need. He might be able to do a few days in College for Cheffing and then most days in actual work. Push him on the Pastry side as normally Pastry Chefs are in very high demand if you are good in this area, but it is a long training process. To think he can become a good Chef with good prospects, Pastry or not, without College training is in my opinion a waste of time. As a Chef you needs many skills and it is rare you can get these without education. If he wants to be a chef you can show you're willingness to back him but in a responsible way by him getting the education in Catering that he needs to become a good one. Being a chef nowdays is a lot more than just cooking and education is important. Hygiene - a huge area, Health and Safety, Management skills, IT skills, Money management, Personnel management, stock control. You need proper education in all these areas. How would he know how to deal with someone who has allergies if he is not properly trained. These days the risks in Kitchens are too great to be taken lightly. I could go on and on but you get the idea. As a chef I spent more time managing than ever cooking and it can be hugely rewarding but he needs proper training. He will not get that in a small restaurant and if he has these health issues a small kitchen is no place to be. Trust me on this. Hope this helps but it might give you an opportunity to talk to him and be supportive in his career choice. He is only young and will be headstrong but if you take this approach might make him see you only want the best for him. He will see reason but it might take time and he might need to figure this out himself or you might need to convince him he has figured it out himself  us guys can be a little slow sometimes. You cannot be a "Cooking"Chef forever it is a young guys game and at some stage he will need to be able to have the skills to branch out in a different ares whether it is in catering or not. Best of luck and if i can be of any other help let me know........
  25. If you have not already checked I think the first thing to would be to see if you have the necessary skills to qualify for a Visa. All other questions become a little irrelevant if you do not qualify for a Visa.
