  1. If Australia is so reliant on China this article might not be pretty reading for what could happen if things go wrong http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/china-business/10123507/Fitch-says-China-credit-bubble-unprecedented-in-modern-world-history.html
  2. LOL Just love the title on this thread.............impregnated by a 457.........its all in the way you read it
  3. We left after 5 years with two aussie kids and did not apply for our citizenship and now, 24 years later, our two aussie born kids have now returned to Australia and us fools are in the process of applying for RRV, 24 years later . So dont make the same mistake, make life easier and do it now. You never know what life holds and vote if you have the opportunity......
  4. We did that back in the Late eighties and you will be homesick for the first year or two but important to stick it out as that is normal and it will come back in waves but this is only natural. Give it a good go, life is to short to give up after 7 months. Treat it as a long holiday and take one day at a time you are only a flight away at the end of th day and people will come for holidays.
  5. Ashes definitely the way to go then you can have a few bits spread in your favourite places wherever that may be. Its nice to sit on a beach in a beautiful spot and think fondly with good memories of the people gone. Can never really do that standing in a graveyard. I like to think of being remembered as being out there somewhere and not buried in a dark hole in the ground....... Hopefully a long way to go as we still need to get to Aussie to find that spot
  6. +1 victoriagirl............... having been involved in catering a good waiter and waitress are worth their weight in gold and would we all not be happy to know such an employer went to such lengths to make sure we get the best service If i was in Melbourne I would be first to give her my business best of luck with the new venture. with that attitude it will be a success dont you worry, but i know the feeling of those sleepless nights :arghh:
  7. You should just to to a local solicitor and make the appointment. It is a legal document you would have to sign so would have to do it from your end.............As far as i know it can be limited for a specific length of time or purpose if you feel it should be. .........Maybe other might have some different advice. But i have made them and have been given a Power of Attorney at different times, hope its of some help. Do remember what powers you are giving away no matter who it is to
  8. +1 with NAB used them for years in Aussie then in Ireland and now going back to Aus in 2014 and plan on using them again probably
  9. Try http://currencyfair.com/ I have used them regularly and just did a check and they offer a very good rate at the moment on AUD to Euro better than some mentioned above Transaction fee of €3 i think at present on any sums Once you setup an account very easy and very quick to transfer.
  10. Sydney Property Prices beat Paris, London and Manhattan I remember reading this about property prices in Dublin a few years ago and thinking the mad men are in control of the asylum and yes they were Having started watching the housing market in Australia, not interested in Sydney, in advance of a proposed move to the sunshine coast It looks like Australia property prices are also just more than a little crazy
  11. I have seen some post on here referring to HSBC as being particularly good/convenient for FX if that is going to be relevant to you. Have banked with NAB and found them very good both in Australia and when they were in Ireland. Hope this helps
  12. Yes agree with Rupert you can buy a house ...............even as a non resident.
  13. Hi Andrew and all other POI contributors who may be able to assist I have been following your threads on here and find you seem to give a very balanced view which is appreciated by everybody, thank you for your time I have a slightly different situation maybe I am unsure as to how/should I transfer my fund (Single member defined Contribution Scheme) from Ireland to a Suitable Approved Super Fund in AU, and how the monthly employer and employee payments that would continue to be paid by my employer would be dealt with as these will continue to be paid on a monthly basis from Ireland till I (50Year old) reach retirement age at 65. We are moving to Australia on a PR Visa How will/Can my employer pay these contributions into a Australia Super Fund on a monthly basis from Ireland. Is this just a case of transferring the money on a monthly base using a suitable FX company to get the best rate of exchange or are there tax implications of some sort on these monthly payments or can any tax implication be mitigated in some way. Or do i have to leave the fund in Ireland and not waste any more time thinking of this. Am i correct in the understanding that Pension drawdown in Australia is tax free and you can drawdown up to 100% and invest as you wish at retirement age of 65 If you can give some guidance it would be very much appreciated to try to help navigate this in advance of actually moving. I understand we dont have to move a fund immediately and the 15% implications on growth on funds if not moved within 6 months. But we are not in a huge hurry with it but how this would be dealt with could/will influence our decisions Many thanks in advance for any recommendation/suggestions you could make
  14. Wait till you get there. Approach each hotel if that is what you are interested in, personally with your resume. Go to the back entrance where staff enter ask to speak to the HR department as you are looking for employment and want to submit your CV. Security will normally facilitate this. Dress appropriately as they may speak to you straight away if they are recruiting. If you are already with an international company as it sounds like you are. Then they should be able to facilitate you from where you are already working by talking to HR. They normally like to look after their own. Hope this helps and best of luck
  15. House of Cards...Brilliant when you get into it and Kevin Spacey is at his best
  16. We are new to the forum and did not realize you actually ran it, have seen some of your posts etc but presumed you were an administrator/mod only. But how insensitive can people be and you don't even need to be ill for that. It is at the end of the day a forum and a place for people to share their views and get advice and as you said there is no charge for any of this and we are all grateful for the advice it gives. Best of luck in getting well i hope we get to share more of your experience/wisdom when you are back on your feet. My wife and I are just in the process of looking at returning to Oz after first being their for 4 years over 25 years ago. We left in 1990 and now are looking at heading back again but to Possibly Queenland instead of Perth. But first its the Visas issues.........should have got those passports first time around...............Get well soon  Skippy
  17. Maybe they met these people so might have good reason not to trust certain nationalities, you would wonder why some peopole bother even to leave their own country and then to post such a question on a forum http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/money-finance/182395-australian-debt.html
