  1. Thank you for your replies guys...harpodom I agree..in uk I would never consider going private as I know our healthcare system well and thibk its great ...I have no experiances over here with hospitals at all...but the vote seems to be on public so far yayyy!! How do tue costs with public hospitals work...do we pay for everything initially and medicare refunds...what is the final cost for the whole pregnancy with public care thanks people youve been great
  2. Hey poms in Oz-ers Looking for advice on the costs of having a baby in Oz as with everything over here, it seems to be crazy expensive!! We are going to be able to start trying in dec/january...a year earlier than we were expecting due to a change in the visa we are going onto we will be permenent residents a year sooner than we thought yayy happy happy! So just trying to have a look into the costs of having a baby here and I think one of the biggest things to consider here is public vs private hospitals...anyone had any experiance with either here or know someone who has and what were your opinions and an idea of all the costs incurred from conception to delivery?! And post-natal care?! Also where do you buy baby things here...no 'mothercare' 'mamas and papas' or 'HnM' in Cairns, Qld! Haha! Literally any info would be great as it will be our first baby so literally no idea where to start....*scary* Thanks guys
  3. Caxton is soooo great...been really useful for us. Its actually been better for us even here than there own bank cards..for examplei bank with nab here and at nearly all ATMs i get charged if i use my nab card but if i put my caxton card in...its all freee so good xx
  4. Hey firstly....i think its an awsome decision and your very brave:) me and my boyfriend are 22 and have just made the same move. We came out here without any pre made plans at all...we are 5 weeks in to the move and my partner has been offered sponsorship through his company already . and he doesnt even have gcse's!! Personally i think some people on here are too negative....what have you got to loose by trying? You have a year on your WHV to find work and we came out here with alot less than 70000 dollars for the 2 of us....ok that is nearly all gobe in the first 5 weeks but we have been renting a very nice house and bought a car already. All i can say is dont try and plan too hard...everything here does work out and if worst xomes to worst and you havent found anywhere to sponsor you straight awaythen youve had a great year in oz and go home and try to find a xompany to sponsor you from there.. SO you can come back out on a 457 hope yhis helps xxx
  5. Hey blossom79 don't think thats really an option at his work as he isn't in a skilled position...he's getting sponsored as a salesman at Harvey Norman. Do you think I have equal rights as a de facto as if we are married? Thank you for your great help xxx
  6. Thank you both for your great replies i guess that is the forfeit..no maternity pay will make it a struggle here! Awww good luck sunniecat xxx
  7. Hi there , just a quick questian about the specifics of the 457 visa.....Me and my partner have just moved to cairns (we are both British), we have both come over on our 2nd Working HOliday visa. My partner is becoming sponsored through his job and I am going to become his de facto, but we desperately want to start trying for a baby. Can i have a baby here as the de factof my partner being sponsored on the 457 or do we need to wait until we become residents to do so? Also for anyone who has had a baby here...how was it? Is the pre natal care good...and what about the hospitals? Also what have you had to pay fpr and is it expensive? Thank you so much for any help you can give hope you all have a great sunshiny day down undrr :)xxxx
