  1. Have you been back to the UK recently? I agree that it has changed so much over the last 10 years, and our town was overrun by immigrants in a short space of time.. . But there are lots of lovely places to choose from all the same. Be open minded about what to expect. Is there any chance you could go on a working holiday (year out) back to the uk to see if it's a place you'd like to live? Hubby and I were talking the other day about if we ever went back we could never move back to the same place we left, couldn't stand it, but lots of other areas we would so... Best of luck
  2. We have discovered camping since living here in Aus and love it! There are so many lovely camping grounds to choose from and nearly all have great clean facilities. We are going on a 4 days trip to Bunderburg this week end (Bagara) and can't wait. Spiders are not really a problem unless your bush camping within the trees but depending where and when your camping, you do have to watch out for snakes a little. :wideeyed: If you liked camping in England...you'll have a ball here! Happy camping x
  3. It wasn't that I expected Aus to celebrate or have fire works night, it's that it hadn't crossed my mind that it wouldn't as too many bigger issue with migrating to give it a thought. It wasn't till I moved here when November came around and realised there are no fireworks in the shops! Then put two n two together! It's not an issue that there no fireworks night on nov 5th, just an observation.
  4. I was pretty disappointed with the lack of anything Halloween. No one round my way seemed to do it, my daughter was a bit upset about it. And don't forget that there's no fireworks night either! On November 5th. I hadn't given it a thought until I couldn't see any fireworks in the shops! Just hadn't crossed my mind :goofy:
  5. Maybe it depends on the area you live in but I have seen the Police stop kids/adults many times for not wearing a helmet and for not having it clipped up. We live in quite a sleepy town and I think it might have something to do with giving the cops something to do :policeman::laugh:
  6. Take a flight from Brissy to Gladstone....from there go to Heron Island! Not to be missed, the most amazing place iv ever been and it's not very well known so its a quite island paradise  we have been twice and will defo be going again. You can access Rocky from Gladstone as its only 1hour n half hours drive up the road. Great Kepple is on our next island getaway list! Don't forget to give Noosa/Noosaville a visit on the sunny coast.
  7. My friend who moved out to Ashmore when they first arrive lived in one of those gated accommodations, they lived therefor about 9 months. She never mentioned any problems living there, although her kids Are 12/13. They only moved because the property was a little small. I think you might be better in a gated secure place in those areas as it is a spit away from surfers and can be a little crime orientated. I have found Aussies to be very child friendly so I don't think you'll have too much problem.
  8. Another fellow walking mossie fridge!! :wubclub:
  9. Yep, that's me too :chatterbox: ill give the whiskey a try lol.... Or will good ol Bundy Rum work... Love that stuff. Wine certainly doesn't help lol :goofy:
  10. It really is a pain in the butt, my Hubby n Daughter don't get bitten, it's just me. By far the worst thing about living here. I just have to cross my fingers and hope I don't catch anything nasty.
  11. I personally find it I possible not to get bitten, whether I cover up (they bite through my clothes).. Put on spray ( they'll find 1cm spot I have not put it on) bite between my fingers on the webbed bits lol. Can't cover up or repellant all day every day so it really a tough one. I was bitten putting my washing out a couple of days ago . There are a few new strains of Malaria/other mossie type viruses that haven't quite made it to our shores as of yet. I do find it a bit of a worry, and I don't live all that far away from FNQ.
  12. Same here, I really don't like using all those chemicals and I have very sensitive skin that is often allergic to most creams and lotions. Also too hot to wear long sleeves n trousers in the summer and they bite right through my trousers/socks anyway. I really do find it a problem trying not to get bitten regardless as there everywhere, day or night. Can't really use strong DEET or so every day, not good for health at all.
  13. We applied for a few jobs before we came out but no one was interested until we moved here in Oz full time. Once we arrived we had a few job offers of which one of them was a really great job luckily. It is a big gamble I know, we found it very scary moving here without a job and leaving behind a great one. Now we've been here for just over a year my OH is getting head hunted on several occasions so there are still jobs around.OH is also an Engineer working now in the mining sector. Try regional areas to start with for experience and once you have a year or so under your belt you will be in better shape to choose a little more. Good Luck
  14. Thats why I live in Central Queensland.... I can't cope with the cold  :-))))
  15. Depending on what UK TV you want to watch, You Tube is great for keeping up with soaps if that's what you want, only a few hours behind the UK showing, there are quite afew UK shows shown on Foxtel too so I don't think you'll find it too bad once you get here. A friend of ours posts an SD card back to the UK for there mate who fills it up with latest moves then sends it back to OZ! Not us of course :wideeyed: as that would be illegal :policeman::biggrin:
  16. Not looking forward to being eaten alive....I'm like a Cadburys fruit n nut to mossies....irresistible. Not surprised though that there about already as it's been a warm winter!
  17. I'm not sure how many huge Barra are left up there Bob, the floods swept so many over the damn wall, we found loads washed up on the Boyne river/beaches after. Would love to catch one but my fishing skills are pretty poor lol
  18. An early morning drive from Gladstone to Rockhampton, Central Queensland.
  19. Lake Awoonga, it's a bit muddy in this pic due to the January floods, lake Awonga copped it pretty bad. A great place to spend the day.
  20. Never use a company that's not MARA registered. You will have absolutely no come back if things go wrong. There are many good agents about both in the UK and Aus. There are a few highly recommended agents that post on this site.
