  5. I came over as a ten quid kid in 1963 and had to apply for citizenship after 4 years and had to apply for a passport to go back to the UK on a holiday at the same time. That was in Western Australia. Cheers, Bobj.
  6. Had many, many encounters with snakes over the years, from putting snakes back into the “bush” after they fell in a trench we made, (Main Roads Dept, WA, Broome 1964) Did that job for 3 weeks, most in one day was 17. Fishing the Beardy Waters in Glen Innes, NSW came across 11 tiger snakes in one morning, most of them quite lethargic and warming up in the sun. Here, in Ball Bay, Qld, we used to get about 3 tree snakes a week in the allamanda vine along the house, until the National Parks people decided to burn off in the NP behind our garden, rarely see any, now. Cheers, Bobj.

    Cyclone brewing

Hopefully, a very short lived one, judging by the BOM map. Mt Isa might get a bit of rain, too. Cheers, Bobj.

  12. Just realised after reading this thread again that I have lived in a 10’x8’ tent as long as I have lived in cities...2 years and enjoyed it more! Also lived for 2 years in ‘dog boxes’, in the Pilbara, building iron ore railroads. Cheers, Bobj.

    The Kimberleys

I lived up there for 12 years and I would be up there in a shot, given the chance, especially the East Kimberley area. Best time to go? Depends on what you want. Strictly as a rubber neck, May through to early October is fine. The end of the Wet is April so, anytime after that. Any fishos will find late March to late April best for barramundi fishing, or late September to December. Ivanhoe Crossing near Kununurra, is the easiest access for barra. Climate? from memory, the coldest we had was 11 C in July. Daytime temps go from about 18 C to 40 C depending on the month, but usually maxima are 30 to 35. No idea which mob to move with. I did all my own driving. If possible, look to doing a trip from Kununurra/Wyndham along the Gibb River road to Derby, or t'other way around. One road I would NOT recommend is the Duncan Road from Kununurra to Hall's Creek via the Northern Territory. However, if anyone is doing a self drive, a trip from Kununurra to The Behn River is quite acceptable, but a lot of it is dirt road. One can find agates literally lying on the road in places. But, a word of warning, People can get lost around the Behn River. I have it on good authority that a beaut English family nearly got lost... If anyone needs any advice, only too willing to help. Cheers, Bobj.
  16. Love it so much, I can mix it with coffee beans, tea leaves, oranges, lemons etc. etc. and wash in it, swim in it or, flush it down the toilet! Amazing stuff! Cheers, Bobj.

  21. Along the Balladonia-Cocklebiddy section the red sand dunes were chockers with bunnies, squillions of 'em. That was in 1963, the old road, History lesson, It also had the longest straight section in Australia, some 147km, over the red dunes, so, in fact it really wasn't straight, as it had over 40 vertical curves. Naughty corner, Bobj. Cheers, Bobj.
  22. When I left WA for the last time, the boss of the Kalgoorlie Division, a pommy engineer, was ordered, after completion of the bitumen to the border, to leave almost all the road gear, graders, 'dozers, rollers, huts etc. at the border in order to get the South Australian Govt. to feel embarrassed that their end was still dirt. Apparently, the SA Govt. got a Federal grant to complete the Eyre Hwy. leaving egg on the WA govt faces. I must not go off topic I must not ... Cheers, Bobj.
