Miserable and bored

Well, I was down the pub last night - Triple Aces on the corner of Elizabeth & Campbell Sts, to watch Spurs away to Wolves and it was the usual mixture of Aussies & Poms (and a few Asians too - they love their EPL too!)

If you had asked me to tell the difference between the Aussies & the Poms, other than their accents, I could not have done it. Their love of Spurs, beer & banter seemed to be the same. Everyone shook hands, said 'gidday', greeted each new arrival with the chant 'Yiddo, Yiddo!' (happened to me tonight for the first time. I felt I'd REALLY been accepted!)

I even asked a couple of them about their experiences coming to OZ. Nathan is an Aussie married to a Pom so I asked him if his wife had had any problems here? 'No, only the usual missing her family in UK.' Then I asked Toby, who is the opposite - a Pommie married to an Aussie, if HE had experienced any problems? 'No, just a bit of taking the Mickey.' They both seemed almost surprised at the question.

Friday night I got talking to some young Aussie guys watching Tigers v Dragons in the Paddo Arms. Just a simple ? 'Are the Dragons out now or do they get a second chance?' Then I asked if any of them were into the EPL? It seems simple enough to me to get talking and I'm not very outgoing. Next time you are in a pub and there's AFL or NRL on, try asking someone to explain what's happening? As long as you are not patronising, I bet they'd be happy to talk.

Incidentally, as far as living in the capital cities goes to get access to 'culture', most Pommies, as do the Aussies, live in the state capitals. We are one of the most urbanised countries in the World.

ahh, there's nothing like a bit of antisemitism to break the ice...

It's one of Spurs' alternative nicknames and if you watch Spurs you'll sometimes hear a bloke beating out a drum followed by the chant 'Yids!

Of course other teams' fans DO sometimes use it as a term of abuse.

Spurs (and Arsenal) have large numbers of Jewish fans - I think they even alter match dates so as not to clash with Passover.

Good luck with your move back to the UK. There is a bit more to Australia that your list but you have to find it for yourself. Its easier to find things in your home country as you spent x number of years there. In a way you have go through some the same things as you did when you first became independent from your parents and find out what/where/who you like and dont like. But after 4 years you decide that you dont like anything then you have at least give it a good try and not returned after 4 months.

We have been here about the same amount of time and we have found endless opportunities for work, socialising, things for the kids to do, places to go that dont cost the earth and general quality of life. Its always going to be a real mixed bag of people who find their life better in Oz and those who dont.

'Tracey Grimshaw (who?), AFL, hoons and blistering weather' reminds me of one of Holden's old adverts that ran 'Meat pies, football, kangaroos and Holden Cars!'

PS She's on Channel Nine isn't she? I usually stick to Sky/Fox news but since I started going to Rose Bay RSL after my swim I've started watching whatever channel they are showing - 'ACA, Today Tonight, The 7pm Project.'

Such a shame you went all the way to Australia only to find AFL and Tracey Grimshaw. All too often on here we see Poms return to the UK who can't resist the chance to put the boot into Aussie before they go. They do it for different reasons. Some just didn't make a go of it, while others genuinely feel they'd be better off in the UK. I'm presently in the UK and enjoying it despite "Ant and Dec", and a fair share of local hoons. If you're quick you might make it back in time for the national strikes. Your warm pint awaits.

That's why it IS served icy cold in OZ, isn't it? Blokes wouldn't drink it if they could taste it! The Poms apply the same principle to Foster, 4X, Carling, etc. etc. There's no other way to get rid of that nasty chemical odour but cooling it gets rid of most of it, or at least enough for blokes to guzzle it down and get drunk ASAP.

True enough. Although if I drink beer in Australia it would more likely be an import. Have spent a lot of time in Germany. Now there is a nation that understands the art of making good beer they have it down to an art form. Minus chemicals.

Yes, you are right about the Germans (and many other European nations too?) But be careful about your imported beer in Australia as a number of the trendy brands are actually made in Australia but they keep quiet about that. Peroni for one, maybe Corona. You have to check the label. I usually drink Coopers 'Green' Label here but find the 'Red' label to be good but too strong for me.

It's Oktoberfest even here in Sydney this weekend so might try and cut down to the German club at Tempe.

I've got a 600ml bottle of Henninger beer in my fridge now from Liquorland for $3.99.

HMMM , what an INTERESTING view point . I'm Australian ( oh and a LAWYER ) - and holding a decent coversation is quite easy for me . Have you considered the company you keep , or your own attitude ? Maybe the real problem is you just wish to be home , and home is not HERE .

If this is aimed at something someone has written, you may be best hitting the 'quote' button below the actual post you're referring to, otherwise your comments could offend others that they are not intended for.

Also note, this section of PIO is quite clearly headed 'MOVING BACK TO THE UK' - if anyone is offended by members not being happy in Australia, then maybe skipping this section would be better....... we are all allowed to have negative thoughts and expressing them on here actually helps others who are going through the same to realise they are not alone, it helps them to cope with the huge decision and transition of actually moving back.

Have a look at the sticky at the top of this page, for some people who put so much effort into moving to Australia then to find its not what they want, it can have a huge impact. We all express ourselves differently, and this page is just what the title says it is.

I've only just realized that 'UK' referred to Great Britain & Northern Ireland!' I thought everyone was moving to 'UKI' in New South Wales. I thought I was missing out on something special being as it's so close to Nimbin!

Never noticed but i'm sure your right. What was brought to my attention though was that Gordons Gin of London is made here. Besides the Germans, the Belgians also make a decent brew.

Does being an Australian and a lawyer have anything to do with the ease of being able to hold a decent conversation???

Think that is a great quote. Australia is marketed as the solution to all our problems, but in reality it isn't all it's talked up to be. I've found myself on hard times as I had to have major hip surgery which was mis diagnosed by Oz docs for over 12 months till I got on a plane flew home got to Oxford and got fixed. The problem I found with Aussies was a distinct lack of education that then turns into adults without basic knowledge.

Especially in Melbourne, which I found to be a twlight zone, It is so far behind I just couldn't cope with the people as you can't move forward and get things done. It is so expensive I don't know how people survive. I'm glad I gave it a bash and will happily get on with things here and progress in life.

I don't think you can possibly say that Oz docs are inferior on the basis of your personal experience. It sounds like you had a rough time in the Oz health system, but tbh you hear such horror stories everywhere

Disagree, my point is how far behind the times they are in every sense. I seen Melbourne's "No 1 orthapeodic surgeon" he couldn't figure out what was wrong in four visits and endless $$$$$.

First visit with surgeon here in UK and problem found straight away. The procedure used isn't even available in Oz. I just wished I'd stopped to consider the reality of what if's. I can't turn back the clock but have learnt a harsh lesson. I wished I would have asked myself the following questions before emigrating:

1)How many times will you actually get to the beach on a average week?

2)How will you cope if you get seriously ill and don't have family by yourside?

3)How will you cope if something happens to someone in your family and your stuck on the other side of the world?

4)Will you be able to have all the luxuries your used to ie: gym membership, nights out, takeaways, buying new clothes etc. on Oz wage and cost of living?

5)Will you be able to cope with working with people that's standard of work is well below what your used to but they still expect same result?

6)Will you be comfortable in a climate that is unbearable most of the time?

It's just things you think will never affect you but it's hard when you trade in and go full bore to the other side of the world only to be disapointed.
