  1. I think a bigger fear is Australia being swamped by racists. And some bigoted self centered media magnate giving these imbeciles a voice.
  2. its an awkward situation, aircraft engineering is pretty much on its arse, all agency work with very few full time jobs. the main problem is, so many aircraft engineering companies have gone to the wall (especially here in Victoria) there are 10 guys for every job. there are licensed engineers with 4 types working as AME's for crap money waiting for years to hopefully get a Licensed role. personally I've just jumped ship, trying to get work with transferable skills. the problem is you need to bullshit to get any kind of start with transferable skills. Companies out here want a guy who can do the job and some, standing on their head juggling to even grant an interview. if you cant walk straight into the job, no interview. if you want a challenge, you wont get a interview. if you know you can do it, and you fashion a resume to show you have in the past and they cant prove you cant. you can get yourself an interview. I know this sucks and is arguably dishonest, but we need to eat. suffice to say, this country is so stuck in its ways, change only comes with the collapse of industries. very little evolution. at least its easy to read a company! the most plentiful place for aircraft engineering roles is Brisbane, you will need to pay a few hundred bucks to even get a start, id's pee test etc, i would definitely chat to an agency first though, get a feel for your chances.
  3. coming down to postal votes now, how many of them can be frigged? systems a joke. chuck in a couple of hundred postal votes, go from point to point voting lots of times. all good if you feel like it. comedy
  4. is Bernard Manning still alive?
  5. PC, i think the only hope now is the senate. the current 2 party system results in your vote being right wing or right wing. so if you are against the current system you pretty much have to vote for greens or independents, to stop them at the senate. as always, its all about the policies, do the research, make your mark.
  6. saw this yesterday, food for thought for sure.....
  7. [h=1]Britain’s ‘Leave’ Voters Cleverly Deter Migrants By Destroying Economy[/h]By The Shovel on June 25, 2016 Migration laws will no longer need to change under an independent Britain, because no-one will want to go there to work anyway. “That’s one less thing we’ll have to do,” a jubilant ‘Leave’ voter said this morning, trying desperately to ignore the economy crashing around her. “I probably won’t have a job this time next year, but at least there won’t be a foreigner there to take it,” Leave campaigner Patricia Waite said this morning, noting that she would feed her family with patriotism for the time being until she could find another job. UK Independence Party Leader Nigel Farage said the exit vote was a classic example of British ingenuity. “What better way to stop migrants coming to our shores than to devastate the economy they were coming here to contribute to. It really is a stroke of genius”.
  8. hard to know tbh, i know building a typical Aussie chuck up house is still lucrative in the major cities, and double glazing is coming down in price, a good house can be built for about 10% more in areas around Melbourne. however as most people move on, and this 10% isn't guaranteed to be realized in the resale value, most people build crap. in all honesty, who can blame them? it's all about the money. if you want to have a play with figures and areas http://www.domain.com.au/ is quite a friendly real estate site. it is a minefield though, id fully recommend renting for a bit, find your feet first.
  9. op, you are going about it wrong, if you want a house here in australia you have to build. the thing i feel you havn't taken into consideration is the rarity of buildings a pom, or anyone for that matter from a modern western country would consider a house. once a person makes a house that's comfortable, with the things on your wish list, do you really think they'll sell it? what also plays against you is how aussie houses are sold on land size, this means the quality of a house makes very little to no difference on the asking price. quite simply you'd have to be mad to sell a high quality house here, you wouldn't make your investment back. build... its the only way.
  10. solar or electric, stay away from gas. as has been mentioned it can be quicker, however with the low efficiency and current cost of gas it will be way more expensive to run than electric or solar. enclosing the pool is probably the best option, add a heat pump if you can... job done another little heat pump nugget worth mentioning is how a split system air conditioner is the cheapest way to heat an aussie home at the moment. if you have a split system, use it hell if you can, cut off the gas completely save another $400 a year in standing charges
  11. only works if you are outside australia, our broadband is too slow to load it up. its criminal
  12. can we please empty the detention centre in nauru soon, with the economy on its knees the people in there will probably not come here anyways! we could spend the money saved to put a nice statue of tony turnbull on top of sydney harbour bridge.
  13. good place to put this i suppose, it's going to affect the economy. some libs want a debate on climate change science. good idea, while we're at it we should debate other things science is only 97% sure about. 1. healthy smokes, doctors approve. 2. is gravity a thing. 3. is the moon an egg.
  14. also the media seem to be loving the $10 cheaper a tank petrol thing, and tbh most of us are too...... however most of us lost between $1500 and $6000 on our super and pensions last year alone and this year looks likely to be the same, simply because they are heavily invested in the mines and petrochemicals. keep an eye on your pensions! Do you bet on this dip being a cyclic thing or an energy revolution? research if need be, then put your money straight, shame to lose a pension for nostalgia or indeed an ideology.
  15. wonderful to see this balance. i guess the aussie programs on tv in the uk still make it seem like the financial promised land. the current downturn in the mining sector and the economy in general and the governments backing of a dead horse should be reflected. a great post.
  16. please dont think newer build means a good house, as has been previously mentioned almost all houses here (especially rentals) are just shite. they look nice but there are massive performance issues. new houses need to be 6* standard. however this is achieved at the design stage. there is no testing of the built house, independent or otherwise. so from a good design, a company and builders can pretty much build what they like and call it (and charge for) 6*. therefore a cheap house, built from the start to be a rental will be a rather steaming dog egg rolled in glitter. a house for an owner will be better, but with an industry completely used to and geared to slum type construction even their best is subpar by even uk standards. best to seal up some window architraves with plastic and live in a small part of the house during winter. we did this in point cook and stayed warm, and are doing the same here in east melbourne. you can also eventually build a real house, but its expensive!
  17. Aircraft holds generally aren't at a set temperature, they are ventilated by the cabin air before it exits the aircraft. the passenger cabin air comes from the engines, apu or a ground air conditioner (rare), its controlled by a number of thermostat zones from front to back of the cabin. the air in these zones is obviously kept at a temperature that is pleasant for passengers. this air then vents through the sides of the cabin into the cargo holds, some is recirculated and some is vented overboard. on the ground with the doors open cargo holds assume the outside temperature very quickly, its usually a couple of degrees hotter in the hold than outside. cargo holds also assume outside air temperature quickly if the cargo door is closed on the ground, as the normal movement of air ie engine-cabin-outflow is disrupted with engines off and doors open. i'm not sure if it is standard procedure, but i would hope animals would be removed from an aircraft when the engines are not running in a hot environment, even for a short stop.
  18. dogs cats etc are crated up and a while before departure are delivered to the plane, they sit in their crates on a baggage trolley for a about 10 mins then are loaded. much the same at the destination, unloaded left on pan for roughly 10 mins then collected, normally the pets are not collected by the baggage guys, they just take the pets off the aircraft and leave them somewhere out of the way for the right people to collect them. my reason for telling you this..... A flightline is one of the fastest, busiest, loudest places you could expect to find, take a look next time you are waiting for a flight, combine this with the sound of jet engines and APU's (small jet engines used mostly on the ground) and you have an environment which i would guess is extremely stressful for most pets. the cargo holds are quieter but still far from serene, windowless and brightly lit with loud fans and pumps its hardly a pleasant experience. I often hear dogs barking like mad in their cages. this isn't something that can be addressed by using a different company or flight operator, if you fly your pets, this is generally how they go. i'm not aware of any company who allow pets in the cabin. Just to let you all know is all, i would guess this isn't in the brochure! personally i'd only fly my pets if the need were dire, and definitely not do it too often.
  19. correct again, and thanks for pointing out the fundamental problem here. The people of Australia the UK and the USA clearly don't live in a democracy, we live in a plutocracy. the only party i've heard mention reform so far are the greens, and most aussies are so brainwashed into hating the greens the system will never be reformed. plutocracy, i hate it, you hate it, im pretty sure most aussies hate it, but it's never gonna change. we can but try to adapt. Plutocracy (from Greek πλοῦτος, ploutos, meaning "wealth", and κράτος, kratos, meaning "power, dominion, rule") or plutarchy, is a form of oligarchy and defines a society ruled or controlled by the small minority of the wealthiest citizens. The first known use of the term was in 1652.[1] Unlike systems such as democracy, capitalism, socialism or anarchism, plutocracy is not rooted in an established political philosophy. The concept of plutocracy may be advocated by the wealthy classes of a society in an indirect or surreptitious fashion, though the term itself is almost always used in a pejorative sense. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plutocracy
  20. all true, which begs the question, what is to be done. we can do the luddite and smash the looms wanting to go back to the old ways, or we can adapt. infact there isnt this choice, this is australian society. like it or not it's gonna happen, adapt or die.
  21. We're in a similar situation, about to build. my suggestion would be to think about things that are hard or impossible to retrofit such as insulation at the planning stage. retrofit insulation is never as good as when added during the build, thermal images show areas not insulated (insulation needs to be seamless to work well). also under slab insulation is impossible once built and is a place most Aussie houses lose a lot of energy. it may not interest you, but it's something to consider all the same.
  22. I disagree, when I read your post my mind springs to the coal industry. There are many reviews that suggest this industry is not just having a slowdown, it is in structural decline. It will never recover. To put our taxpayers money into it is foolish, negligent and plainly corrupt. I would rather pay a little centreline than prop up the dead. We claim to live in a capitalist society, as such bad businesses must fail, it's part of the cycle of capitalist life! Aussies are driven people, a person making a miners wage isn't going to sit on centrelink long, they will find work.
  23. Is religious or cultural surgery covered?
