Hi Peewit

Can I ask who you use to find furnished rentals in Sydney?

We are coming over in October for 2plus months and don't want to be in our daughters place 24/7. Not fair on them (or us!)

Any advice gratefully taken.

Cheers Pam

Hi Pam

The lower north shore is the area of Sydney where most furnished apartments are located. Often these have superb south facing views over the harbour to the opera house and the city. Of course as the sun is in the north here, a south facing apartment is often cooler but with your skyline beautifully lit by sunshine. I use domain.com to search for properties http://www.domain.com.au/?mode=rent but there could be a problem with a short term let. I know there are some companies that specialise in short term letting of furnished apartments but the cost rises significantly. You could google for gardenview apartments who are one of those specialists.

Hope you find something that meets your needs.

G'Day Pam

I can't contradict Peewit's praise of the Lower North Shore – we like it too, and that is where our Sydney base is. But I'm not sure if it's strictly true to say that's where most furnished apartments are. I do know that most apartments in Sydney are let unfurnished (though you can hire furniture), and the normal minimum let is 6 months. You can expect to pay 60–100% more for a short-term furnished rental, but that would normally include electricity, gas, linen, etc.

There are "home-swap" web sites that might turn up something suitable for you, if you have somewhere in the UK that would appeal to someone going the opposite direction. Googling "owners abroad" might also get you somewhere – there's a website of that name, but it also brings up others. One Sydney outfit we know of that specialises in short-term furnished rentals is Rental Apartments Sydney & Melbourne by The Apartment Service.

Good luck, Mike

Xray, HIV and urine test plus blood pressure, sight test, height and weight. For me (presumably the same for everyone?) I then saw a doctor. I didn't have to squat but he did a sort of full body check. As it had more than 6 months since I had had a mammogram he said I could either have a breast examination with a chaperone present or opt for another mammogram. I was also asked for dates of most recent smear test. Finally as he noticed an abdominal scar, I was asked to provide evidence that the operation (15 years ago!!) had been for a benign tumour and not for a malignant one. i presume that there is an equivalent set of checks for men!!Hope this helps

Yes, thanks. I think it helps to know what to expect.

............Hi Linday

it was I who was asked to squat! - I am fit and active, tennis several times a week etc. I also take HALF a sleeping pill at night - and was asked WHY! - in attempting the squat I was unable to touch my ankles with my bum! - therefore my file was sent to Brisbane for further scrutiny! I also had to stand on one foot, hold arms out in front to check for shakiness. I did pass the medicals though!, sadly my daughter did not (mentally challenged) and we are still trying to decide which route to take now.

Good luck with your meds, sometimes it seems it depends on the doctor him/herself, but it sounds as though most people get through quite easily.

take care

audie

Thank you. Better start practising being able to touch my ankles with my bum! (Not sure how often you might need to do that once in Australia, but hey ho). On the plus side we are reasonable fit and do lots of hillwalking, so should be OK. I'm sorry to hear about your problems with your daughter. Good luck and fingers crossed. Don't give up.

Hi

Here is a link to the official site that explains the process:-

Thank you Charlie. We are just starting to think about things like medicals and police checks now that we might actually get a case officer within the next few months. It all seems a bit more real now rather than a distant dream and it is actually quite scary thinking about the amount of money we are shelling out.

For us, it's 'what price to be with your grandchildren' I think. We don't have much family here and even my son, who is staying here for the time being to finish Accountancy qualifications, is thinking he may want to move to Oz when he has more work experience. I would hate to be here with both our kids in Oz.

It also varies with the doctor doing the medical. I have heard of some who "follow the book" whereas others are more sympathetic. Our doctor telephoned us the week before the examination and told us what to write on the forms "to avoid setting off any alarms". He was most helpful with some of the concerns we had. We were quite worried about the prospect of medicals in the early days of our visa application as I am sure a lot of other parent visa applicants are. don't worry too much.

Charlie

We will be going to St John's Street, Manchester. Fortunately it's only a 20 minute drive for us. Has anyone had any experience here?

I went to Birmingham. I think it cost £285. it was all very well run etc and the doctor very reasonable-he also told me the grade I got which I don't think is everyone's experience...

Hi, can anyone help me with my query about Medicais? We live in Sheffield

and I believe the centre here no longer does the examinations. Will we be told whereabouts to go (Manchester is probably our closest) is there a list of medical centres to pick from? it is nearly twelve months since our acknowledgment date so we are expecting to hear something pretty soon!...........getting scary!

Hi all, for those that remember the pictures of the devastating floods only 2 weeks ago, we drove out through Toowoomba yesterday, passing through Ipswich on the way, and the only visible signs of the flood waters are empty houses and businesses, most of the businesses are being worked on, road works over the range, and at most of the creeks you can see where the levels were. There has been so much cleaning up done that it is quite hard to imagine what it was like. The people here have really pulled together and still are, it's so good to see.

Cheers

You can go wherever you wish. Here is a link to the UK approved panel doctors:-

The list (whittled down a year or so ago) is at United Kingdom – Panel Doctors.

As far as I know, you can choose where you go from this list.

On the back of that my daughter who lives in Queensland has had warnings of 2 Cyclones further North (Townsville) where some of our extended family live.

The first one thankfully has done minimal damage, the second (and worst one) is due to hit Wednesday night/Thursday morning and a metre of rain also forecast, it's heading West......

Lets all pray to our Gods that people are safe, they can't take much more of this

I felt that it was time to join PIO as all the names I recognise are poping up on this Forum.

I have posted on the BE forum in the past but I confess to being very quiet over the last couple of months.

Well with a case officer being granted today, a big surprise:jiggy: and 28 days to organise medicals and Police Certificates from Uk and South Africa the month should prove to be very hectic. I have just been caught on the South African Police checks as we left in November 2001, this should be fun.

We are looking to go to the Central Coast as daughter lives in Avoca Beach, our fancy is Jilliby or the Yaramalong Valley as we prefer the country to the Beach, still we shall see what happens!! I am sure that the plans will chang a few times over the next few months!!

Yes, the tv news here is full of reports and warnings of the impending damage etc that it will cause if it makes land tomorrow. A lot of people have been advised to evacuate, though thats not so easy for everyone. Its a lot further north from here, but still not something one would wish on anyone!

Yesterday I started on the quest to find employment here, and decided best idea was to visit some employment agencies. On visiting the first one, I was asked did I have a Job Seeker ID from Centrelink. Of course my belief of this CPV is that we are not entitled to anything from the welfare (Centrelink) and told the lady as much! She advised me to visit Centrelink, which was about 100 mts away and check on it. I duly did this and it would seem the we are entitled to use this service to find employment and as such we both have an appointment to see a Government sponsored employment agency. Hope this will help others that will need to find work in Oz, as it widens the field of search quite a lot.

Hi Guys,

Can anyone remember the Global Pensions guy that was recommended on the other thread as we must start comparing costs for transferring the jolly old private pension. This seems to be a minefield !

You should be posting your query on the Money and Pensions forum ... you might get a better response there.

Best regards.

We went to the one in Manchester earlier this year - fantastic guys! They even gave my husband a copy of his x-ray on a CD! The doctor also rang him at home to warn him about his blood sugar being a little high, recommended to see our own doctor to get medication upgraded.. They're brilliant and have our highest recommendation!

You mean Clive Herrald of Global Pension Transfers. He is certainly alive and kicking and keen to hear on the Global Pension Transfers website
