NURSES - Moving to Australia

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some advice from nurses who have travelled across to present at AHPRA in order to gain registration.

I received my notice in principal early December 2015, and I am travelling to Sydney next week. Just trying to get everything in order and looked over the letter again, noticing the following paragraphs towards the bottom - "Timeframe on application for general registration

Under section 85 of the National Law, the NMBA has 90 days in which to decide an application. If a decision is not made in this time the application

is taken to be refused.

We propose to extend the expiry date for your application until the deadline for you to present in person, being 8 December 2016.

If you agree to this extension please advise your registration officer by email by 22 December 2015.

In the event that you do not comply with the above requests within the stated time, we will take it that you have withdrawn your application under section 80(5) of the National Law, and we will close your application for registration."

I did not reply, and I am now concerned that my application will have been closed and I won't be able to join the register when I arrive next week. Has anyone else been in this situation? I have emailed my AHPRA registration officer and I am awaiting a reply.

Thanks, Alex x

Wanted to add to this thread... the conversation so far has been related to nurses and APHRA right? I gather that nurses can get general registration straight away? Anyone on here an OT?? We seem to have to have limited/supervised reg first due to the skills assessment regulations and therefore can not go straight for general and then preventing you for applying for jobs! To get a job you need to be registered but to get registered you need to have a job that will agree to give you supervision and therefore you can not fill in the limited registration app form due to this as its need to have your employer details included and a contract of supervision supplied... anyone else had this problem?? thanks and good luck x

Hi Alex,

Definitely get in touch with your case officer asap. I received my notice in principle in November and replied back straight away so got mine extended till November 2016. I left for oz in December and I've still not presented in person over here yet. Did your case officer not mention this specifically to you? Mine emailed me and made it clear that I had to reply back asap for the extension. Sounds like they didn't make you aware of it?

Get on their case and good luck :)

Feeling depressed .... my filipina wife has studied for 34 years, always in English, never failed an exam, is now a British Citizen, and has specialised in kidney nursing, where there is a worldwide shortage, but her reading speed is a bit low, so she can't pass that IELTS exam, and nobody is able to offer her a job without it. She is a terrific nurse, loves her work, and 34 years of ambition are being wasted. Any ideas welcome, any civilised country. Thanks, and sorry about the cricket.

Hi. Anyone able to help please?

I am getting all my documents together for Anmac and Ahpra.

1) Do I need to send my uni transcripts to Ahpra?

2) Do the transcripts need to be signed by the notary. If so, is that every page as there is a lot of pages and I can foresee a huge bill for this! Or do they just stamp every page and then sign, date etc on the last page.

Thanks.

Perhaps try another style of English exam - I think there's a couple that can be used rather than IELTS - Cambridge exam? Sorry, forgot the names. Good luck!

We found those other exams ... I also forgot their names, but nobody will accept them for nursing. We cannot find a tutor within 60 miles and at 200 miles they ask 175 pounds an hour ..... so if we do a 4-hour lesson, and drive there and back, the total cost is about `1300 dollars for that lesson! Waaaah!

Has she tried it yet? Many ppl dont get required scores first time round

This is my wife, and yes she did IELTS 3 times, but her reading is always slow, and her mark for that is well down, but she always passed all the other parts. 34 years of top education wasted because she reads slowly and carefully. No civilised country will accept her now, but they are crying out for kidney nurses. She is a brilliant nurse, and working now as a cleaner on the same wage as a kid in McDonalds.

Yes you do need to send them. I went to a notary and he stamped, signed and dated every page. I took two sets of everything (for ANMAC and AHPRA) and the cost was £90. Get a few quotes before you go though because my quotes ranged massively! :)

Thanks. I have found a notary for the same price. Just hope the 1/2 hour he quoted me is enough given how many pages there are in my transcripts

Fab. My appointment was only 20 minutes but in that time he went through it all and checked it. Then he sent me away for 45 minutes while he did it all and I came back and collected it all. I think they definitely underestimated how many pages they actually had to sign but they didn't charge me any more. As long as you've been clear in listing what documents there are for them to sign you'll be fine.

Hi now they are many tests other than IELTS (e.g. PET-A, OET, I think TOEFL as well) are valid for nursing registration in Australia. Check the websites for exact details . Also recently they changed the criteria as well. Now you do not need to achieve the required score in one sitting. Please check the website for exact details.

Hi. Sorry another question. Once you've been invited to apply for a visa (189), how do you do this, i.e in proving your points? Do you have to upload and complete documents etc like for the skills assessment or is it just medicals, police checks, form 80 and that's it? Just checking that I don't need to get anything else certified by the notary. Thanks

After thinking I had sent everything possible they could want. I've been asked today to send transcripts and copies of my GCSEs and a levels. I never received transcripts and I did these 15 years ago. Wtf!!! Anyone else had to do this stupidity? I have a degree and visa has been granted but AHPRA are ridiculous

Which box did you tick for English Language, one of them wants proof of education as proof of English ability, maybe you ticked this.

Your school or the exam body can send you copies, I got these for my partner direct from AQA the examining body.

I'm English by birth. Have completed education up to masters in English. And worked as a nurse for 6 years. With ielts scores of 9. How much more do they want lol

They accepted a 3 year old ielts with an 8.5 average as I still speak English (or as near as Geordie gets). Which was gray as I couldn't get a copy of high school transcripts. registration granted 26 may. Now to find a job

ANMAC - letter of determination

This has yet to arrive (nearly 3 weeks now) and ANMAC are wanting $60 and me to post them a form before they will issue another one.

Is it just me or is it ridiculous that the cost of this is on me when I had nothing to do with it not arriving? Also the fact I need to post a form to them first is just delaying things further.

Be glad when I don't need to deal with them anymore.
