  1. Hi everyone, I made the move to Sydney in April 2016, and I've been working as a nurse in a private hospital since then, on a 457 visa. I have applied for a new position in the public health system, and wondered if anyone had any experience with changing sponsors for the 457 visa? How easy is it, timescale, price etc? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Alex Sent using Poms in Oz mobile app
  2. Hi all, This may seem like a stupid question, but I was wanting to clarify who pays for a 457 visa? I've been nominated by my employer (I'm currently on a working holiday visa), and have filled all of the details for myself and my de facto partner for our 457 visa. The website states the cost for the visa will be $2120, and I wondered if this will be payed by the employer, or by myself? Any advice would be gratefully received  Thanks, Alex
  3. Hi Dani! Your situation sounds very similar to mine! I arrived in Sydney in April on a 457 visa, along with my fiancé Tom, and haven't really had a chance to meet new people other than work colleagues so far. We're northerners too, from Yorkshire, and now living in St Leonard's on the north shore. Did you have any success with the meetup website? Alex x
  4. Hi, Just looking for some advice, I travelled to Sydney on a working holiday visa, and I have been offered employer sponsorship on a 457 visa. I'm wondering about the ease of transition between these visas, I have heard that I can't commence the 457 without first leaving and reentering the country, but I'm not sure if this is just a myth. Has anyone else made this transition? Any advice appreciated  Thanks, Alex
  5. Thanks everyone, I got a really quick reply from my case officer confirming that the extension is in place until December 2016, I'm relieved beyond words!! I will now read every last word of important correspondence twice! I think I just took in "notice in principle" and started celebrating! We fly on Thursday and everything's fallen into place now, couldn't be happier. Just the goodbyes here I'm dreading! Sent from my E2105 using Tapatalk
  6. Hi everyone, I'm looking for some advice from nurses who have travelled across to present at AHPRA in order to gain registration. Sorry I've already posted this on other forums but I'm desperate for some advice as travelling next week!! I received my notice in principal early December 2015, and I am travelling to Sydney next week. Just trying to get everything in order and looked over the letter again, noticing the following paragraphs towards the bottom - "Timeframe on application for general registration Under section 85 of the National Law, the NMBA has 90 days in which to decide an application. If a decision is not made in this time the application is taken to be refused. We propose to extend the expiry date for your application until the deadline for you to present in person, being 8 December 2016.If you agree to this extension please advise your registration officer by email by 22 December 2015. In the event that you do not comply with the above requests within the stated time, we will take it that you have withdrawn your application under section 80(5) of the National Law, and we will close your application for registration." I did not reply, and I am now panicking that my application will have been closed and I won't be able to join the register when I arrive next week. Has anyone else been in this situation? I have emailed my AHPRA registration officer and I am awaiting a response. Thanks, Alex

  9. Hi, I am travelling to Sydney on 07/04/16 on a working holiday visa, having received my letter of eligibility from AHPRA. I have just been offered 457 sponsorship from a hospital, and have a few questions about what is required. Do I need to have an ANMAC skills assessment for 457 visa? What documents are required as evidence with the visa? Any help would be greatly appreciated :cute: Thanks, Alex
  10. Hi everyone, looking for some advice! After a long wait (held back by the changes at AHPRA and topping up to my degree) I have FINALLY got my letter of eligibility from AHPRA for my registration! We have flights booked for April and are planning on working holiday visa in the first instance. We were thinking of finding 457 sponsorship once out there, but after doing some more research (mostly tax related) now feel 189 might be better suited. I've been looking into the modified ANMAC application, and I have already done and passed my IELTS but I wondered if I could still apply for the modified assessment as I haven't received a registration number yet - just the letter instructing me to attend the office in person with the valid visa/ID? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Getting excited now it's getting closer! Alex x
  11. Hi, I have a few questions about income tax ahead of my move to Aus, I will be working as a registered nurse in my 7th year post graduation, therefore weekly income will be around $1500, annually $78000. How much tax roughly am I looking at paying? Will the amount of tax I pay depend on which type of visa I go for? Thanks, Alex x
  12. Is this a new thing? Has it come in since the changes? I thought it was just if you HAD a criminal history, looking at AGOS-40 form questio 15 if you answer yes it advises you to attach a copy, if no it says go to next question. When I applied January 2014 my application and supporting information was all fine apart from the diploma/degree issue (hence refusal of reg), and I didn't provide police check. Worried now!
  13. I haven't sent any police check for AHPRA, I thought it was just needed for the employeer and visa? Alex x
  14. Hi, I was in the same boat after submitting my application in January 2014, I had a long wait to find out that AHPRA no longer accepted UK diploma nurses. I transferred my 240 diploma credits (I had a DipHE, I think you get more credits with an Advanced Diploma - so 300 credits) to the Open University, and I have just completed my top up degree. I did it full time (October-July) but there is the option of doing it over two years. I got a student loan to cover the tuition cost, and I was able to continue working full time whilst studying, although it was difficult at times!! Now I have graduated with a 2:1 Honours degree, I am now in a position to re-look at AHPRA registration. Hope this helps, it definitely feels like a set back, especially when ANMAC were ruling the UK diploma as equivalent to Aussie degree! All the best - we'll get there!! Alex x
  15. Thanks for your reply, I think if unsuccessful in securing 457 sponsorship we would look at working holiday as we are both under 30, and then explore 189/190 once out there
  16. Hi, I am a registered nurse looking to make the move down under, I had applied to AHPRA back in January 2014, however my registration was refused due to the fact I had qualified with a Diploma back in 2010. To cut a long story short, I completed the necessary modules with the Open University, and I now hold a degree in nursing practice (woohoo!) I have just re-sent my application to AHPRA, and I am patiently waiting for the next hurdle they throw my way!! I have been looking into 457 visa sponsorship, and the costs associated with it. I wonder if anyone has gone on a 457 via and can advise re. costs, specifically who pays - empolyer or employee? Any advice greatly received, Alex xx
  17. That sucks big time  I initially applied to AHPRA at the end of January 2014, and waited what seemed like an eternity to be told in September 2014 that my application was due to be refused due to the change in criteria (I qualified with a Diploma in 2010). The formal notice of refusal came in October 2014. Since then, I have enrolled and *NEARLY* completed the top up degree course through the Open University, I have been doing it full time, so two 60 credit modules at once, while continuing to work full time and it hasn't been easy to say the least, but thankfully the end is in sight (7000 word end of module assignment and exam first week in June). Once this is finally over with, I will then have to go through the whole application process again, including getting all documents notarised as AHPRA haven't returned the first lot! Your situation sounds dreadful, 10 times worse than mine, to actually physically be there and be forced to return to the UK :arghh: I wish you all the best, and hope you're soon nursing down under!! Alex x
  18. Well, after applying to AHPRA at the end of January, today I finally received the email with the proposal to refuse my registration on the basis that I am diploma trained. Offering me a referral for a bridging program, which by the time you've shelled out for that, student visa and living expenses is not a viable option. I have enrolled with the open university, and will begin my post registration BSc top up degree in October on a full time basis (distance learning as well as working full time), so hopefully this time next year I'll be ready to start the whole exhausting process again! On the positive side, the only point they raised to dispute my eligibility was the qualification itself, which means that I provided the correct evidence to meet the other relevant criteria, which will help somewhat for round two...
  19. IELTS is needed for ANMAC and visas, but if you're planning on going out on your partner's visa you wouldn't usually need it. HOWEVER, having said that, if you are planning on doing the costly bridging course, IELTS is unfortanately a requirement for eligibility for the course.
  20. This whole process is so flawed and exasperating!! I can't help but feel that we're on our own with this, why aren't the NMC/education authorities backing us up?! And I'm hoping it's slightly positive that they obviously don't quite know what's accepted yet at AHPRA, otherwise they'd surely have 'weeded out' all the diploma applicants and sent rejection/bridging course letters? I'm hoping no news is good news and that they'll review the AQF standard that they've set for the diploma. What about the diploma nurses granted registration prior to the changes? Surely they'll be allowed to renew their reg every year and continue to practice? We were planning on a working holiday (hoping for 457 sponsorship) to earn some money before we get married, get a mortgage, settle down etc. but this feels to have slammed so many doors shut. We are now thinking of the working holiday visa and me not working as a nurse, but to be honest, I don't know what I'd do if not nursing, it's not just my job, it's who I am. Just want to say thanks to everyone on here, If it weren't for all the other people on here in the same boat, I'd feel so alone in this mess!!!
  21. Oh dear! I really don't like the sound of this, bet it'll be heading my way next! When will it end?
  22. It's so frustrating isn't it!!? I sent my application end of January 2014, received notification and payment was taken second week of Feb (just after the changes were brought in), and since then I've had several requests for further information to cover the new criteria. My University have been extremely helpful and prompt with all of this. When I received an email from AHPRA requesting a more detailed course outline and module breakdown, my University were also unsure what more information they could provide. I emailed my caseworker and asked for an example of the information, and she forwarded someone else's transcript (not even bothered to anonymise it though, has all her personal details, DOB, grades etc..... don't think data protection exists in Aus) Anyway, I forwarded this to Uni, they sorted me one out and sent it straight off. I can send you the transcript if you think it might be helpful to show your University? The latest communication I've had with them was to confirm that the transcript was added to my file, and that my application was forwarded on to the next assessment level. (might sound familiar as I am the fiancée of TWC who has posted previously). So I'm not holding my breath on hearing anything soon, the only way to get info out of AHPRA is to pester, they don't volunteer anything. All the best, we'll all get there eventually, and then all this stress will be a distant memory!!
  23. I'm having the same stress... after emailing uni for the information, they said they could help with criteria 2 and 3, however the information for criteria 8 should be in my possession (transcript and portfolio). I've tried the NMC, who have told me that this info needs to come from uni as I completed my training in 2010, and they dont hold the transcript from this period. I think I'll end up holding a sit-in protest at uni until everything's signed and sent off!!!
  24. how about CPD in medicines management? would this be sufficient? We had very little in the uni sylabus - mostly copying out of the BNF side effects and contraindicatiosn.
  25. Sounding a bit more positive now the dust has died down i think? I've discussed with Aussie healthcare recruiter who doesn't think having a diploma will be an issue as it is considered equal to Aussie bachelor degree. Also received my email from AHPRA 12th February to say they've recived my application - so I at least know it's made it there safely! Fingers and toes crossed that the rest of the process runs smoothly!!
