Calling the UK

Can anyone give me ideas of best way to call the UK.

I used to use messenger voice calls to speak to family but lately it's been so echoey, impossible. Nobody has an Iphone so cant FaceTime.

We don't have a landline anymore and I got rid of my free calls to UK on my mobile plan as it was so expensive.

What other ways can I do it? When we first moved to Australia I used a phone card. Is that still a thing?

Skype? Although if you are struggling with connection on messenger you may still have the problem with others. Another one is WhatsApp I’m sure that’s what I used when I use to chat with @pablo

We use Boost Mobile, they did a 365 day pre paid for $150. 80GB data (for the year) and unlimited UK calls - land line and mobile (and a number of other countries).

They are a cheap arm of Telstra (we get the free Telstra NRL pass through Telstra login)

Unfortunately it has gone up - but may be about $200. More data I think, which I don't need.

Got it because OH elderly parents gave up on anything internet based, skype etc. They always complained of some laptop/tech problem- which were mostly non-existent - they just weren't comfortable. Those methods are never consistent, good quality and sometimes had to keep trying to connect

So we call landline they put on speakerphone. No complaints or problems getting through

I mostly use Zoom or Teams.

If your friends don’t have a PC and you need to go old skool then Skype can be a good compromise, their call rates to UK phone numbers are cheap and it’s fasssttt https://secure.skype.com/en/credit

Or Vodafone - look at Combo Plus, they have an offer of $12 per month for a PAYG bundle which includes 500 UK minutes.

Exactly the problems I'm having. Asking Mum to download something like Zoom or WhatsApp is beyond her and as she's shielding there's no younger relatives available to ask to help. Will look into that thanks

My sons and I have used viber for many years and have never had any problems. 100% free to call for any amount of time and send photos, videos and any links you want, I’d describe it as brilliant. I can’t understand why anyone would pay when there are such great options for free.

I pay $30/month with Amaysim and get 55GB/month, unlimited calls and texts to both Australian and UK landlines and mobiles (and 28 other countries). My wife is on the same plan so we get 110GB/month data. We don't even bother with broadband internet any more! When you call mobile to mobile it's crystal clear - not like using Skype, Viber or these other VoIP programs.

Do you get Internet connection for free then? If so, then please let me know who your provider is 🙂

I'm on the same plan! Amaysim keep giving out more data for the same cost... Not complaining!

@vickyplum no one can beat Amaysim at the moment (IMHO), but I'm always on the lookout for a better deal. The OP stated that she didn't have a landline so I don't know why so many people have recommended programs that use VoIP and are heavy one data. If you're only paying for a mobile plan, then get one that includes free international calls - simples!
