Hi Mags,

I'm Emma and I have just qualified as a mental health nurse here in the UK and have just got my first staff nurse job. Hurray...the hard work of the last 3 years have finally paid off. My husband is a graphic designer and we have two girls aged 9 & 6. We came out to Perth at easter this year to visit family and fell in love with the place. So.... I am going to get a couple of years experience and then hopefully be able to move out there. Not sure if this is the right thing to do and how strict they are on how much experience you have but this will give us chance to save as much as we can.

There always seems to be lots of demand for nurses in Australia (adverts in RCN etc) but is the reality of actually getting a job that easy? Can anyone help???

Hi Mem, I sent my AHPRA application to Adelaide and it took just 3 weeks...you are best to use Darwin or Adelaide,... Sydney and Melbourne I believe have a back log and people have waited months for registration

Deb

Hi Deb

was planning on sending to Adelaide but have been told that you have to send to state you will be working in so now have job offer in Victoria need to send there. I could of course not mention job offer and just put on form that I plan to work in South Australia which was potentially original intention as we decided would go to either Adelaide or Melbourne but now have this offer decision is Melbourne so bit wary of out rightly lying on form

Hi we are waiting for our 175 visa to come through (fingers crossed). I am the primary applicant as a secondary school teacher. My husband has just completed his first year of an adult nursing degree course in the UK. We are hoping to move after he has completed the course and had a years experience. We were just seeking advice regarding how he registers etc ... we are hoping to move to Brisbane. He was hoping to pre register as a student but the site he was directed to wants an australian address to enable him to pre register. Could someone give us some information regarding the process he needs to go through ie who does he register with, how long does it take, costs etc etc..... Thanks!!! Tracy

My husband is looking at form AGOS-40 which the form for general registration at nmb but he says its asking for addresses in australia of proposed workplace. We are planning to go and for him to find a job when we get there. I know we are planning far ahead but is he looking at the wrong form? Is the NMB the right place to start? Help please any nurses out there! I am sure he is looking at the wrng place (he disagrees!!)

Hi I too am a HV with 26 years in the NHS. Have you looked at DIAC and the points test? To see if you can go independently or need sponsorship? I am rushing off now but would come back later and post some more.

Geordielass44 the same question applies regarding DIAC etc. have a look and see what you think. the order you do anything will depend on what you want and are eligible for.

This has probably been covered before...sorry. Just wondering, I notice that some people put down the date of their 'skills assessment.'

We're hoping to go over to Darwin later in the year but no-one has asked for this. Is it compulsory? We're both RMN's waiting on AHPRA outcome before

hoping to have work assist us in 457 visa. Thanks. x

I didn't read your posts properly, apologies. A number of us have applied for registration with APHRA through Darwin and Adelaide as they have been the quickest to process. If your hubbie doesn't have a job offer when applying just put in SA or NT for the Adelaide or Darwin offices. Brisbane/Sydney/Melbourne offices are taking months and months to process. Good luck.

Skills assessment are a requirement of independent visas ClaireyD. I am going over, hopefully, on a sponsored visa so only needed APHRA. If and when I wanted an independent 189/190 visa I would have to have a skills assessment. Good luck in your job search!! Darwin is one of the quicker offices to apply to APHRA through at least.

Hi GilraenH

thanks for the reply. I am assuming my husband wii have to be qualified before applying for registration? Once he gets the eligibility for registration letter does he use this to register in Queensland? Do you need all this before applying for jobs?Sorry so many questions! We are totally unsure of the process as he wont have had a skills assessment for the visa. On PR will he still need to do the IELTS? :-)

Yes I believe he has to be qualified before registration, although Oz students can apply coming up to qualifying so you might need to check that out with APHRA. If he is not qualified one year though he will need to either get a graduate position in Oz or a year's experience in the UK before coming over. To qualify for a skills assessment for DIAC I think he needs a minimum of 3 years experience. You need to confirm this though.

Anyone know of a refresher course for enrolled nurses in WA?

The wife's registration has lapsed due to SEN's not being recognised in Ireland, where she has been working as a care assistant for the last seven years. She would like to go back to work as an SEN, if possible?

Thanks

Hi all,

I am looking to move to aus sometime early next year. I would like to try Darwin but have heard it is expensive to live. Would i realistically be able to live there off of a registered nurses salary and save money or would all my money be spent on living?

Thanks

Darwin is a lovely place to live, and in my opinion has a great climate - I love the tropics! But for many reasons it is an expensive place to live.

The tropical climate is not for everyone, but if you like the tropics Townsville and Cairns are great places. I prefer Cairns, hence I live here. All regional locations are more expensive for consumables and fuel, but rental and purchase of property is much cheaper. And in my opinion quality of life is much better.

Hi everyone,

I dont know if this is the right place to put up my query or not. I will put it like this. My girlfriend is in Sydney and she has recently completed her Bachelor in Nursing from Australian University. She told me that she will be needing Each Band 7 in IELTS to get registration from Nursing Board there. She has tried two times but she always gets score less than 7 everytime in Reading and she is really feeling very low about it. Her student visa is going to expire in September 30 2012 and we are trying to find out ways to allow her to remain there. Because of not getting registered she cannot work as RN. I saw this one visa 485 subclass Graduate visa of 18 months which she can apply but problem is which occupation to nominate her for. As she is not registered, she cannot choose Nurse as occupation, right? Hence, if anyone can tell me please which occupation should she nominate to apply for this visa. I would be really very grateful if I can know about this. Which occupation would be suitable for her to nominate for this 485 visa ?

Thanks in advance

Where did your girlfriend grow up and go to school? Is she from the British Isles?

I know very little about the visa system. But if she has good marks, can she apply for a visa extension if she enrols in an Honours or Masters program? During which time she can commit more time to improving her IELTS reading marks. Then apply for registration when she has a good enough IELTS scores.

Hi thanks for ur reply. She is planning to study for one more year and then fulfil the 5 year study requirement which makes her eligible for registration. Just found out that she cannot apply for TR as she is not yet registered. Tough times ahead but hopefully we can get through it. Cheers!!!

Hi, Has she tried Occupational English Test (OET) and I think OET is easier compare to IELTS. Ask her to try OET once otherwise she can continure one more year of study.

Also one more option is register with New Zealand nursing Council as they do not want IELTS to be cleared in one sitting but needs to achieve band 7in each within one year and then take the advantage of Trans mutual agreement . Plz check their website for more details. I think being completed BSc nursing in Australia she does not require bridging course. I recon go this way it will be quicker.
