Hi Cityfan,

I think i may be with the same agency that you are referring to! Me and my other half plan to go over there on that visa as its quicker and cheaper.

Thanks for your post, most posts are about PR visas, why sit around waiting to go??!!

Hi,

I'm Tania, nurse currently working in surgery (urology & plastics), waiting for 176 Victoria sponsored visa, hoping will be back by August-December time, currently starting to apply to recruitment agencies for suitable posts.

We were originally heading for Geelong, due to house prices, size of place, Uni for older children, schools and hospitals facilities.....but have been asked to consider job going at The Alfred in Melbourne. Seems to be a big discrepancy on commuting times. I'm guessing with shift work, and heading into Melbourne for 7am start, the traffic will be ok? Thinking might need to look at somewhere like Weribeeto be a bit nearer? Anyone got any ideas, or suggestions for going about securing employment as have only really scratched surface. Is there any point applying directly to hospitals? or are recruitment agencies the best way to go?

Good luck to all

Tania

Having lived in Melbourne for many years I can assure you that the traffic will not be as bad at 7 am, as it is at 8 am, but it will certainly have started to build between Geelong and Melbourne on week days.

Before you commit to renting or buying, if you're thinking of travelling that far, consider whether you will incur any toll charges on your journey - they can mount up to a considerable sum over a year. See: CityLink Home , EastLink - Time Better Spent & Transurban Group .

I've worked at the Alfred, although not in plastics or urology. I found it a good place to work, the parking was a problem at times, even with the new car park, especially on a week day evening shift.

I've been out of Vic for a few years, so I don't know what the current recruiting strategies are. Others on the forum will have more up to date information on whether it is worth applying to individual hospitals.

The AGOS 04 form still states :

Be signed and dated by your employer (i.e. in the past 5 years) with a statement "This Curriculum Vitae is true and correct as at (insert date)

Where as other parts of the form lead me to believe it is ME who needs to sign the form as true.

Is this horse poo ?? Which is the right thing to do ???

As if it's not enough hastle trying to locate a reasonably priced Notary Public.

Also how long is the NMC Verification of Good Standing valid in thier eyes. I've seen on some posts that they accept a year. Is this right ??

Hi all you hard working nurses.. I am a registered nurse currently working in the UK.. I now have permant Oz residency.. My partner is a psycholigist.. awaiting decision on de-facto visa application. I am busy gathering all my documents for AHPRA registration and have now been told this will take 6 months to process.. partner needs to register as a psycholigist as well. Hoping to emigrate to Sydney one day soon (we hope).. My questions are.. 'HOW MUCH BLOODY LONGER IS THIS GOING TO TAKE' & HOW DO YOU COPE WITH THE STRESS?

...'HOW MUCH BLOODY LONGER IS THIS GOING TO TAKE' ...

AHPRA has been a pain since its inception. They are slow to register Australian educated students of nursing, I hear are giving Nurse Practitioner candidates a particularly difficult time, and have had some very bad press over their treatment of overseas trained medical staff.

AHPRA seems to have been set loose well before the system was able to actually work properly.

WA was very wise to avoid it, and let it bed down first.

Hiya Liz,

I am going through an agent, and they reckon it will be about 8-10 weeks, from what I remember he said. He has given me that many dates for things I am scared that I am telling you dodgy information! Are you looking into state sponsorship?

I see you are from Inverness, I am originally from Inverness. Used to work in Raigmore a good few years ago now.

Are you going with family or yourself?

Looking forward to chatting,

Donna

Hi Donna, I am going on the Independent 157 visa. Hope to go accross for a year or two if work allows me to be away that long :biglaugh:I thought it would take that long to come through. What about you what visa are you planning going on? Going with my flatmate who is also a nurse. Are you going with family? Sent you a wee private message!

Hi All

I've just posted on the QLD thread asking the below and was kindly redirected to the official nurses thread. Pleased to meet you all you all and here is my query: :-)

Im new to PIO and have just introduced myself on the welcome page., so this is officially my second post.

In short we have been talking about a move to Oz since 1997 when we lived in Melbourne briefly. We always talked about going back to VIC because we loved it but as we have started the discussions again we seem to be moving away from VIC and looking more a QLD. This is in response to reviewing so many positive posts about the QLD coast and areas.

I'm a nurse and my OH is a doctor. We have three children, boy 8yrs, girl 7yrs boy 6mths.

In short we had stopped talking about a move after our first born but the changing economic climate in the NHS combined with my maternity leave (idle hands) has refocused us a little.

We would be looking at a employer sponsored visa if OH secured a post. We are keen to get him the right job and so have been looking at hospital profiles in and around the Brissie/gold and sunshine area. We noted that Namboura General is a good size (for Oz), and wondered if anyone has any feedback on the hospital and it's services as either a patient or employee? I note its a public hospital and it seems from alot of the threads that many of the hospital workers seem to favour public to private healthcare to work in (though that's just a general observation of the discussions and it seems to be a debateable issue).

Any comments, feedback would be greatfully received.

Cheers

Can't help you with nambour hospital sorry, but with regards to the private sector. There have been quite a few horror stories regarding the private sector. My wife has helped at least 4 nurses that I know of, break their contracts and find a position in the public sector. OTOH, there are nurses we know of, who are quite happy in the private sector. It's a bit hit and miss I'm afraid.

The one thing that does hold true though, is that the public sector generally has better conditions, and professional development.

Being tied to a 457 is not for many, when there is ample work opportunities without so doing.

Good luck

Thanks Kev.

OH would be employer sponsored. I wouldn't look for work straight away anyway so i would suss it all out first. I'm probably more flexible than he is.

Thanks for the advice.

Does he have a speciality Amanda, or a field that he'd like to specialise in?

Hi keV

Yes he is anaesthetics and intensive care. Not sure he could do both in Oz as icu training seems different. Will investigate. :)

Take a look at The Prince Charles Hospital. A "centre of excellence" and expanding.

good luck

Hi Kev

Thanks for the advice. Looked at Prince Charles and it does look good.

Considered your comments re the visa issue too and had a nosey on the Oz Gov website. OH could get a 175 easily enough (or so it seems)'not sure how easy it would be to find a post independently though. It seems harder than nursing due to number of posts available. On top of that wouldn't want to have to move around looking for work with the kids.

My understanding is that he could convert to a 175 once out there and that he would only be tied to an employer for a couple of years? Is this right or my naive understanding? I wonder whether the fact that having a recruitment agency support us through the whole process, flights, visas, registrations, housing, schools does offset the risk.

I'd appreciate your comments/thoughts as to be honest,at the start of this process, I'm flumoxed!!! :)

Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks. x

Hi wns

Welcome to pio. I'm new too and there is so much to learn. I agree with nursealli. I've spent the last week or so just reviewing posts and have learnt lots. There is loads of experience/comments/debate on here. Often there are disagreements but if you listen to the rationales behind opinion it helps.

It's 15years since I nursed in Oz and thinking about going back. My experience is well out of date. I can say I enjoyed the experience though.

Good luck :)
