Hi guys,

We've started filling out the application for state sponsorship and am a little confussed about the ANZCO code.

We got ANMC suitability under ASCO code 2323-11 Registered Nurse in June 2010, so can we pick which ever ANZCO code is closest to my OH responsibilities (Elderly acute medical here) or do we use the code that's marked as "not elsewhere classified" or do we indeed have to go back to ANMC to get a new code (Really hope not!)

Also, to add to our worry, the section about ANZCO codes for Registered Nurses on DIACs site says

Indicative Skill Level:

In Australia and New Zealand:

  • Occupations in this unit group have a level of skill commensurate with a bachelor degree or higher qualification. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).

My OH has the advanced diploma, so is that no longer enough and means the ANMC skills assessment we've got is no longer valid?

Any help or previous experience on this appreciated.

Hi all

I've been here before, some of you may remeber me as i remember some of you :)

we started the ballrolling to move to oz a couple years back but things changed and we decided to stay put fo a while. I am however having another look at the moment but with all the changes to visas and stuff i don't know where to start

I currently work as a charge nurse (band 6) on a surgical ward. I have worked full time now for almost 2 years but prior to this i worked on the bank and didn't meet the 20+hrs per week requirement for PR visa (skilled independednt one) I also have experience in community, renal, ITU, general medical/surgical

Ideally I would like to go to WA or QLD and probably looking for sponsorship for a 457 visa as i'm pretty sure i still won't meet the points criteria for a skilled independednt one. If i went for a 457 do i need to do IELTS, i thought it had become necessary for all nursing registration but since heard if you do registration with APHRA now as long as you can prove your secondry and nursing education was in English you don't have to sit the exam?

Do you think it is worth sending some CV's off and completing some expressions of interest. Im reluctant to start applying for registration if there is no chance of getting a job or sponsorship

many thanks for you help

Hi all,

We're in the process of applying for our visa, just waiting for SS from WA. However my husband and i have the chance to visit friends in secret harbour in March this year so we're going to do our own little version of 'wanted down under'. I was just wondering if anyone knew of any hospitals i could visit in the Perth area to arrange a good look round.

Cheers

hi guys,

I recently emailed Royal Perth Hospital about sponsorship opps for the 457 visa. (I am nearing the end of my nursing rego application with AHPRA and so I dont think i can be that far off!?.... and just paid £240 for a notary to do the last few docs they asked for)....and also i read on the imm.gov.au website that the 175 (independent) visa is currently taking up to 24 months+ processing time ;-(

but i just wanted to say that the email I had states that there are VERY limited opportunities for overseas nurses at present, they are not sponsoring and there are not many in WA, altho she encouraged me to not lose hope for the future. She said that aussie nurses are finding the job market "challenging", !!!and they have to offer all jobs to them first and they are priority (quite right)

But i just wanted everyone to be aware, i know this is just Perth and WA, but I have heard of other nurses jumping on the 457 visa cos of its obvious benefits and being miserable and tied in to the contract working in private sector in Aus. (I think there is a guy on PIO who talks about his wife helping out many UK nurses find jobs elsewhere and they are miserable etc.

I know there will always be horror stories, but i just wanted to let everyone know what we;re up against as I thought I was home dry after getting the Reg, but it just doesnt seem to be the case at all and seems a far cry from when i was told Aus is desperate for nurses and I could just walk in (hinted at by a qld government recruitment chappie in jobs fair)..etc.

Ps anyone wanting community work - its seems to be really difficult - I have 3 1/2 years exp and was told by a number of people you need to get at least 2 years experience in acute getting to know medicare etc before they consider you for community/district nursing ;-(

I have 6 years experience - med/surgical/MIU/Diagnostics and Rehab/Continence Specialist and DNursing under my belt and the agencies I have contacted suggest its not enough/I dont fit categories they are looking for, and one even said she is going to have real trouble matching me up with a job!!!!! cheeky mare and at a push maybe she can eventually get a consultant to mention me at a hospital with one of their contacts and tell them about me (dont blimin think so!! ;-)

i just want everyone to be aware of my experience - we have now decided to put off our emigration to Oz due mainly to the newly discovered cost of living we have found. We were heading to Perth and recently discovered the cost of living has shot through the roof - we did an online shop and for us its just to much - no one spends less than $1000 on food a month...could be due to exchange rate but i dont know.....

and i am horribly miserable about it ;-( but when things arent meant to be, theyre not meant to be, as i said not trying to spread doom and gloom but i just want everyone to be aware of all the facts, I thought i was!! ;-)

good luck everyone

Thanks Andie for your post. Perth is where i'm wanting to head so this is sad to hear. I have sent my cvand application off to a couple of places that are actively recruiting UK nurses at present and offering sponsorship and I have decided to place my future in their hands, if i get offered a job and sponsorship it is meant to be, if not then so be it.

As for the cost of living i have looked it over and spoke to other people living out there at the moment and honestly I can say I shall be just as skint there as i am here :D we have no ties here, don't own a home, pay through the roof for a tiny 2 bed flat etc and i live in a part of scotland that has the highest propert prices, the food in tescos costs more here than it does elsewhere (ive checked) and we have the highest council tax of anywhere in Scotland. So again Im putting my future in the hands of the places i have applied to if i get offered a job we are goig to go and have an adventure and se what happens.

all the best with your future plans

we are the same position, its so hard but its a great way to look at it. After 4 years of consideration it just doesnt seem to be the right thing for us right now :arghh: Shame cos Im not going there for a dream lifestyle or am that bothered about a fantastic house and all the material crap (tho something decent would be nice;)..just love Australia and would love to live there, its fascinating.

Like u said you may aswell give it a shot.

best of luck.

p.s would you let me know how you get on, id be really interested to hear about the sponsorship

If you keep comparing everything in that way you'll never move, you need to forget about the £ if the exchange rate was still around $2.5 you'd be saying how cheap it is it's irelevant unless unfortunately like us you'll be taking savings and equity out of our house over!

You need to totally work out your outgoings here and what they would be in Oz and see what % you have left at the end of the month as available cash, we did and we reckon we'll be up considerably whilst renting and slightly down when we get a mortgage but the pros of living in Oz definately seem to out weigh the extra few quid out of pocket per month.........for us anyway.

I've applied for a few jobs in public sector HDU/ Cardiology places in Sydney, not heard anything at all from them yet - I've heard that they don't really consider overseas nurses because of the likelihood of having to sponsor.

Sent a general application to a private healthcare company a couple of weeks ago. Got an email from a Cardiology ward manager a couple of days after that, asking for a phone interview. The interview seemed to go okay and they seemed really positive, saying that they would contact my references, asked me to email them a copy of my passport and saying that they expect a full time vacancy to be available end of March. They said they would contact me by tomorrow but yesterday I asked one of my references if they've been in touch and she said they haven't! What's that all about? :( My passport photo must be even worse than I thought :(

hi everyone,

Not sure weather this helps but ive just moved over to melbourne with my husband, 1 yearold son and jack russell. i was a nurse in england for 7 years in ITU, i now have a job in the cardiothoracic centre, hoping to start mid feb, again few problems with registration processing, buts thats another sago altogether. i wil be working 57 hours over two weeks ( thats classed as there part time) with my ecxperience i will be on roughly $58,000 but that doesnt include extra enhancements like weekends and nites im also being seconded for charge nurse post in 3 months wher my wage will be a basic $70,000. you also get nice perks like salary sacrifice so im paying for my child care through that, u can also pay, rent, mortgage and large items like car loan all through salery sacrifice so no tax which is a little bonus.

they have been amazingly flexable with shifts with me having my little boy and seem to be willing to accomodate what i can do. The Alfred hospital has a brilliant reputation and i can honestly say on behalf of myself and husband its been the best thing so far! my husband is an engineer earning £25,00 in the uk he now earms $90,000 plus we get a living away from home allowance whih is about $300 extra a week.

I would say to everyone do it!!! our life is so diffrent but brillant down the beach at least 3 times a week, loads of parks so much to do, everyone is so friendly they all have full conversations with u in a shop its just great. dont compare to £/$ we did to start with but that was just to make sure we werent getting ripped off to much like buying big items such as couch, dining room table, car but we dont bother now. food shopping is pricey but the quality i find is much better fruit lasts 7 days fresh its great , or just go fruit picking on the farms cheaper again lol xxx

Thanks andie ,

Just reading the posts it's such a shame u have changed ur mind, it is more expensive out here exchange rate is pretty high at the minute. Most jobs do pay more from speaking to people especially if u have a trade, my sister is an accountant out here and earns so much more then in England so it's kind of irrelevant really.

Our food bill for two adults ,18 month son and a dog is about $900 a month x

hi everyone, dont lose hope on the jobs front. I rang all the public hospitals and was told there was no jobs....then i applied to a private chain called St John of God, the private healthcare is nothing like the one in the uk. I have secured a job in ITU which is the area that i wanted and start on 21/2, going for a meet and greet on tuesday (we landed jan 27th) so please dont stop trying, hope this helps xx

hello

I think my post will get lost here. I am an oncolcoy nurse and am considering heading to OZ to wrok and see if the place suits me. Looking at Adelaide, canberra or brisbane.

Have no clue about visas and I am the type who would want to see the hospital meet the people before I make a decision which of course is a huge issue as I am in the UK! Dont think I could go on a 457 so will aom for state sponcership.

So anyone made the move to Adelaide etc want to share their stories?

Hi there,

the anmc assessment, seems very daunting, but I have just got all the info together that is required and it really isnt as bad as I thought, (bar the cost). You are required to get you manager to provide some details. I got my charge nurse, and he was more than happy to do it! Use the link below, it has the online assessment form for anmc and also a link to an information pack, i printed it and it really helped me to get the form and all the informtation required. Good luck!

Thanks! I have looked at that but I haven't done my itelts yet so I can't fill it out which is really annoying! :cute:

Could you give me an indication of what documents I need? I am going to get all that together first. And do they need signed by a lawer etc?

I think my charge nurse wont be happy I am going to oz:embarrassed: I work now in the private sector and redundancies happened last year. They are probably going to happen again this year and although my job seems safe, if I told them I was immigrating they might just think, 'oh well she is leaving anyway' . Even though it takes ages!

This is why I might try get my HR dept to do it if its allowed. Or even one of the senior nurses? Stress!

Hi all,

I've been lurking and looking for a while now and finally decided to post!

I'm a school nurse in the UK with a degree and am wondering if any other school nurses have moved across to Australia?

I keep seeing vacancies for melbourne and particularly QLD; and looking on the skills list I'd be classed as a community nurse 254414.

I'm planning a reccie to Perth/ Adelaide and Brisbane in the year but any info greatly appreciated!

Thank you x :wubclub:

Oh dear a bit of a nightmare situation then. What I would suggest is getting your IELTS done and getting all your other documents together. Then asking for the manager bit at the last minute, atleast by then you know you have your IELTS behind you.

You will need to get documents on your employment history from human resources, aswell as the informtation from your manager.

You need for the ANMC:

- verification from the NMC sent directly to the ANMC this costs £34

- verification of acheiving your IELTS again directly to the ANMC once you have done it this costs £15

- A certified copy of your birth certificate and passport, also marraige certificate if applicable

- 2 x certified passport sized photos

- Certified copy of your graduation certificate

- a transcript of training - from the university or college you trained in this cost me another £40. If your college/uni has closed this can be obtained by the NMC.

- Then it is your professional reference - on headed paper

- Employment statement - from employment services.

The link I gave you has all the info you will need to obtain the above, eg what is required by your manager and employment services.

I would suggest when getting the IELTS and nmc verification sent you send it to both the ANMC and AHPRA as this will save you money when you come to register to work out there.

Where are you hoping to immigrate to? I'm sure it will all be worth the stress in the end! That what I'm telling myself anyway! :arghh:

Thanks Liz! Very helpful! Are you doing all this on your own too with out an agent?

And one more question. You send the docs as you go along on the assesment, right? Gawd is so confusing!

Yeh I suppose you got to look at the long term picture, it willlllllllllllllll be worth it!

We are undecided on NSW or QLD. I think it will prob be in Sydney for first year or so then once settled we will move up the coast.

Where are you thinking of going?
