Flathead
Is it only me? Yet another evening sat in because I am bored to tears with nowhere to go. The only pub near here is like a casino and will be empty anyway....the bowls clubs and RSL s are like God's waiting room and it has Been dark for a couple of hours. in the UK I would have gone to the pub for a drink and a chinwag with whoever was around but that just doesn't happen here. We have a hundred TV channels and none of them seem worth watching.....there are no lights on in any of the houses round here....where is everybody?? I wouldn't mind the odd quiet night but this happens ever night...Arrrgghhhhhh!!!!
Sapphire
Same as us.We sit here night after night, nowhere to go, nothing to do. If we had been in the UK, we would of been out at a concert or the theatre, or just out having a nice curry and a walk round afterwards. The pubs are all pokies , tote and footie tipping and they close at 8pm. You take your life in your hands if you go into town, not that theres a great deal there, other than lots of drunks, who want to fight everyone, which doesant rock my boat. We have got Foxtel, so at least we can watch the soaps through the week, but at weekends theres just nothing to watch. Everyone goes to bed really early round here, so every house is in darkness. Its exciting living in Oz isant it:) So much Free stuff to do?????????????
Guest
You see that quoted a lot on here don't you, "so much free stuff to do?" Well yeah, the beach is free, as is a BBQ in the local park, but once you've mined those pleasures what else is free?. I really can't think of any other stuff, apart from jogging (yippee) that doesn't cost anything?

But you still need to buy the meat and other bits for the BBQ and still need to put petrol in the car to go to the beach and/or BBQ (OK, I'm just being picky here . And besides why would I want to go somewhere else to have another frigging BBQ when I can have that in my own backyard anytime. I have literally explored all the local parks and more with my two year old, we know and have been to most beaches nearby, if I wanted to explore and take her to somewhere a little bit different, I'd have to drive at least an hour. Occasionally we do it, but not all the time. Now, the plan for tomorrow is to take her and her four trucks down near the beach where there is a steep slope and roll them all down again and again.... yipee!! well at least she enjoys it! LOL Or I might just follow Dom's advice on 'things to do in Perth' and go for a rolly-polly at the local park...spoilt for choices

We havent found anything free down here, the beach is miles away, and the roads are awful to get to it, really dangerous, I think its called Elephant pass, and its an awful road. Everyone ,either sits in thier sheds drinking,or go to thier shacks and drink. There doesant seem a lot else. The place is still dead, from the holidays, most businesses havent even opened yet. We took the dogs out for a walk last night and theres not a soul about.
Guest
It's something my parents always comment on as well every time they come to visit. I remember coming over on the holiday to the Gold Coast and having horrendous jet-lag and so went out for a walk at around 9.00 at night. The in-laws looked horrified and said "But it's very dangerous!" They weren't wrong!. A combination of no street lights, no pavements and shuttered houses emitting no light meant that I was lost within minutes and dodging car-drivers who looked bewildered to see a pedestrian on their street! Lucia
Ugh, we too sit night after night bored to tears! To be fair, we have a 17 month old up in bed and no babysitters so there's not a lot we can do anyway. I've given up on the television here as it's dire. The only half decent thing that has been on (Modern Family) is now on the 50th bloody cycle and each 30 minute programme has 4 advert breaks! In the UK I never watched box set/series type things but since being here we have watched over a dozen! I so miss the BBC and find myself flicking the channels here for anything British...we even watched something called 'The Rat Inspector' purely because it was British and by far the best thing on! As for restaurants...I went out for dinner (Christmas do) with the girls from my mothers' group. There were 9 of us and we booked our table for 7:30. By the time we were given menus, our orders were taken etc it was getting on for 8pm. The food arrived at 8:30 and they started clearing and packing away tables by 8:45. We didn't notice at first as we were chatting etc but the waitress came over and asked if we wanted coffee or dessert as they "technically shut at 9pm". We had to have our coffees in take away cups and they turned the main lights off as we were still sitting there! Why on earth did they allow a group of 9 to book a table at 7:30?? I was pretty pissed off by it but the other girls thought it was funny and was the norm! So there I was, back at home sitting on the sofa at 9:20pm after a 'night out'...BORING! Sorry for the rant! :embarrassed:
Jacaranda
Last time I was back in Adelaide I stayed with my twin.Their "local"is a typical burb pub.No one at the bar, everyone aimlessly feeding one armed bandits, for hours on end!So bloody boring its not funny.Atleast in my old local (I lived rurally)it would be quite a raucous atmosphere especially on a Fri/Sat night.Jukebox on,and people laughing and talking.I spoke to my Mum a couple of days ago,and asked her what my twin had been up to.Her reply "Ah nothing much, just the usual, they went to their local on the Fri night and shopping on the Saturday!Wow whoopty do!lol
Guest chris955
I absolutely hate Auusie bars, I wont call the pubs because they arent. We are a 2 minute walk to a 600 year old pub that does wonderful food, if we dont want to go there then 50 yards further is a 400 year old pub. Chortlepuss
For all you people bored on a Saturday night (particularly in Queensland) may I suggest doing what I do and sleeping your way through it? I find a lazy boy and a cheap blanket combined with Aussie telly just the thing to get my zzzzz's in and can be found slumped in front of the box most nights from about 7pm. Your liver will thank you for it, and you're only missing the meat raffle and being chatted up by some toothless 70 year old redneck at the local Pokies.... This also gives you the advantage of being able to get up at 4 a.m. for your jog so you can appreciate everything Australia has to offer while the sun's not too hot
Sapphire
I dont think I have ever gone to bed so early at weekends in my whole life.It is so boring. We watch Foxtel (UK TV), through the week, so I get my fix of Corrie and Eastenders, but at weekends, theres just nothing decent to watch, hence we just end up going to bed, as we are so bored. I never imagined Aus to be like this, I thought we would get to go out to Concerts ans shows, and for nice meals, but theres just nothing going on, and certainly no resturants that are decent or decently priced.Plus even if there was a decent resturant, they would be closing at 7pm, and pushing you out the door, anyway. I really dont think friends at home, beleive us, when we tell them, how boring it is.
simmo
Great thread, sums up my thoughts on awesome aus in a nut shell. I remember heading into "Brisvegas" one Saturday hunting for a decent boozer and having to check to see if it was a bank holiday, all it needed was tumbleweed to blow past. Silly me thinking it was Britain in the sun :embarrassed:
VERYSTORMY
I have two bars within walking distance (just as one is a half hours walk). Both only open about 3 days a week. One is the gold club and the bar is almost always empty. The other, does such wonderful drinks that the wine is from a box and the beers in tins. Oh, they do do a sunday lunch - the meat came from a boil in the bag. There is a restaurant in walking distance and they advertised a sea food extravaganza. Now, being big sea food fans, we booked. It was packed and everyone there thought it was amazing. There was fish - of the type that comes in identical triangle pieces and deep fried in month old oil, oysters which were clearly frozen and some dry looking mussles. We didnt stay. The locals were lapping it up though at $60 a head.

Seafood is a rip off here,we are not big seafood eaters, but just looking at the prices in the resturants and supermarkets, they are shocking. I got Hubby some frozen prawns for his sandwiches yesterday, $18.00 a kilo bag. I thought that was alot of money. Beer in tin and wine from the box, is just pure class
namron1
A great thread worth revisiting again to hear all new exciting things that folk have discovered to do in Oz making for exciting weekends. Been here 6 years and we are now masters of the routine one has to adapt here to survive, it would be a shock to the system if we did find something exciting to do next weekend. Initially my OH was very positive telling everyone how much there was to do here, that last for about the first year but is no longer her view Certainly getting a lot more sleep here than I did back in the UK
Melbpom
This reminds me of the years we spent in Diamond Creek (edge of whoop whoop). We bought in the late 1980's at 17% interest rates and would spend every spare hour landscaping a 45 degree block and then every Saturday night playing cards with the neighbours and drinking port. I thought we were just too far from anything but it seems everyone else is just as bored.
