Teachers Moving or Living in Australia

1) My wife didn't have to teach at any of her interviews. I think they were only an hour or so long... Also you don't get told on the day... My wife told me in the UK you had to hang around on the day waiting for them to make a decision...

3) There is an education supplement in THE AGE newspaper on a Saturday that has lots of jobs in it. I would start applying now if I was you, it is prime jobs time NOW... Apply now say your in Australia buy the time they interview you will be... If you wait till Early Oct till you apply you will have missed most of the jobs

I'm new to this forum and have just spent the last few hours poring over all the posts - thanks so much to all of you who have shared such useful info. I'm heading to Melbourne next month (on a Perm Res visa and with my VIT reg now sorted) but have a couple of questions that some of you already in Aus might know the answers:

1. Are teaching interviews similar in format to England? - from what I've gleaned, am I right in thinking that candidates don't have to teach lessons etc? Are they all/half-day affairs etc? All insights v welcome.. The interviews are far more brief, and usually just involve a panel. Lessons are discussed rather than observed. In state schools the questions are given to you 10 minutes prior so you can prepare your response.

2. I am predominantly a History teacher, with HoD and SLT experience, but appreciate I will need to be v flexible to get any sort of work in Melbourne (I gather it will be v tough). Aside from History, can anyone clarify what related subjects are taught in Victorian/Australian schools (e.g. Humanities, Global Politics)? Not too much use here sorry, it varies. History is quite often taught with other subjects in junior school.

3. Is there a particular day when new jobs are advertised/published? Jobs come up all the time, no particular day. But many jobs are listed in the Age over the weekend. There are 3 categories:

- state https://schooljobs.education.vic.gov.au/psp/ROLPPRD1_EA/APPLICANT/HRMS/c/HRS_HRAM.HRS_APP_SCHJOB.GBL/

- catholic http://www.ceomelb.catholic.edu.au/Positions-Vacant/?terms=employment

- independent http://www.independentschools.com.au/

Thanks Benj1980 - that thread was what set alarms ringing...!

In all fairness to us, we were assured that Mara agents would be used for our case - I did specifically check this point. Since last night I have had a response and our skills assessment is in the meat grinder of bureaucracy. At present all I can really gripe about in terms of teaching australia is rubbish communication until I messaged via Facebook. I got a response within 10 mins (at around midnight) and an update this morning on where our application has thus far reached. I will hold off judgement for the next couple of weeks until the estimated completion of our skills assessment rolls around.

Apologies for crashing this thread but the one where this post best sits has been closed!

In more optimistic mode, hopefully we will be successful in our quest to get a visa

Hi,

I contacted this company at the start of the progress back in May - they were the first agents I phoned, and their website looked perfect with it been for teachers. However, the information they gave me set alarm bells ringing as everything they were telling me completely contradicted what I had seen on the australia.gov website, (and what I have heard from other agents since). They said we could get independent visas - either though primary teaching is not on the shortages list, they said ECE was no longer on the list and my husband who has less experience in teaching and is older should be the main applicant - which would mean we would lose points instantly! I could't find a MARN number anywhere to check. I got the inital email asking for money, then 3 more within a few days. I had a bad feeling so emailed them with these queries but i got no response. I left it there! I just had a really bad feeling about them. I hope for your sake I am wrong!! I'm doing it alone because I just dont trust anyone else, and Im a control freak!

Hi there. Could anyone advise on the job prospects for secondary teachers in Perth. I have been advised that there is an over supply and opportunities would be better in Queensland where there is a shortage. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Hi

The supply and demand really depends on the subjects you teach and UK experience is well valued here. You will be expected to offer two subjects. What is your specialism?

My specialism is Art & Design but also have ICT, Re and Special Needs. From previous experience as a interior architect with Autocad skills and strong Graphics background I have been advised that I could also teach Industrial Design & Tec/Manual Arts. Rural areas seem to have the teaching jobs but we have family in Perth and my husband is a joiner whose prospects may be better there in a city location.

It is not called Manual Arts in WA. It is called Design and Technology. The focus is strongly on the design process now, the old manual arts notion has had its day.

Your Autocad skills, together with graphics and ICT should put you in a strong position. There are very few women teaching D and T and many D and T teachers are due to retire, so that is also in your favour.

Perth has a strong demand for Design and Technology, Maths and Science.

Hi Guys!

I am NOT giving up trying to become a teacher out in Oz hahahaha. So, after weighing up all my options which, at the moment are absolutely zero, having only a three year degree in Primary Education (aged 3-11).

I was wondering, does anyone know if there are courses that I would be able to enrol on once I got to Oz that would put me up to the four years? So maybe an AUS version of the PGCE?

After years and years of hard work and pure determination of getting on the uni course in the first place and battling hard through the whole degree, I will be damned if i leave that fight now. I know its a hard road and a pretty tough working environment over there to be able to get into teaching in the first place but hey, nothing worthwhile comes easy in life. So, please, if anyone knows of any courses that I will be able to look into further that would help then any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much in advance x Sarah x

When you get here, do a one year post grad course in any education related discipline.

There are one year graduate diplomas in teaching, but these are all being phased out and replaced with two year Master of Teaching courses.

You already have your teaching qualification, so all you need is one more year of tertiary education, just make sure it is relevant, for example special needs etc.

There are hundreds of such courses and many of them can be done externally.

So if the job offer was in Qld would I be better taking it or holding out for Perth?

That is way too hard a question to answer as it is dependent on a lot of factors and how much you want to be in Perth. If you get a job offer in Queensland then you have to seriously consider it.

Brother in law and fiancé are currently looking to buy so will initially be staying with them but have been looking at northern suburbs for ourselves. As for support putting us and three children up until we get on our feet will be a massive help. Whatever way we look at we are inclined to come to the conclusion that I'm more likely to secure a job in Qld and hubby in Perth. We could go to Perth and live with his brother until we get work which would be fine without kids! With waiting lists it looks like we need to get them sorted with childcare asap and can't do that without jobs. But there's no point taking the job in Qld if my husband can't get anything. So we are kinda going round in circles. Just going to have to take a risk one way or another

Hey,

Just wondered if anyone else is feeling a bit disheartened with the whole teaching job hunt. We can't move over until I've got a job in place for financial reasons, but finding it really hard to even get to the interview stage. Has anyone sent their CV to a job agency to get some feedback? I'm secondary maths, looking for a post in Perth. I'm aware that this is the main job vacancy season, so all too aware that if I don't get something in the next few weeks I'll have potentially missed the boat for a whole year :(

Job agencies are okay but really it is the school who decides on the CV. Here is my advice; make a list of all the independent schools in Perth and write a letter to them directly sending your CV letting them know of your availability and visa status. You should look at the key educational initiatives for WA at the moment and tailor your CV in that direction. For example in QLD there is a drive towards quality control and the implementation of pedagogical frameworks state wide such as Dimensions of Learning and Art and Science of Teaching, so knowledge of a stringent system of quality control and pedagogies would be useful. Baseline diagnostics and data analysis of GPA fluctuations and other factors are used for monitoring and target setting. Inclusive Education is another focus which has recently had a huge injection of staff and funding.

Schools are looking for key things based on current school improvement plans and if they are there on the paper, they may want to discuss some more. Many schools publish their plans so it is easy to find out what they are looking for.

good luck

Sammy, this is really interesting. I am currently collating my documents for skills assessment and super excited! I am a Design Tech Teacher specialism in Graphics and Resistant Materials. My husband got a job in Cyprus as an Engineering teacher so I have been supplying whilst out here but. Its just nice to see some positive feedback regarding job situation.

We are still not certain on where to move to as the OH wants to go back into Engineering and that front seems all doom and gloom. With that in mind, you say there are few female DT teachers...is that specifically in WA?

Hi, I just had a query ... AITSL assessment is in process and was just wondering if someone could help me out with some info .... if they know or hv been in a similar situation .... I have all the requirements for AITSL but what am afraid of, is I may not make the required 60 poiints for immi .... I finished my ITE in 2002 which is a 2 year teacher training course in Early childhood .... been working for a renowned skool since 2008 but only finished my degree in August 2014. (AITSL says early childhood ITE can either be post graduate or undergrad) would they look at my work experience after my ITE or would they only consider the work done after I finished the full qualification required by them. On the AITSL website they say only work paid employment after the ITE wld be considered ... nowhere have they specified "work experience after the full education requirement of AITSl" its a bit tricky ... and that literally has me on pins and needles.
