Just checking...is it the IELTS Life Skills A test I need to book? 99% certain but thought that I would double check on here. Anyone confirm this please? TIA.

The test you need is IELTS General Training English. Im 49 so no points for age so I needed superior English for 20 points. The test is fairly tough so prep is required - I did it twice but met a few people that had done it 3 or more times.

Before you sign up check how many points you need. I think I've read elsewhere that you get 10 points for competent english if you have a UK degree so make sure you're not paying £150 unless you need to.

After closer inspection I have only transcripts for one year of my degree so will obviously need to get the others along with my certificate copy. It has my registration number which by memory is my student number. I can also get a verification letter from my university which I reckon I'll do anyway just to be sure. Did you get your police check and medical check before your EOI?

My agent advises to wait for police check until I get an invitation but I need one anyway to register with the QCT so I've just ordered it anyway. I think you need to enter Australia within a fixed period from medical / checks,

No. I applied for my visa and booked medical and police checks about a month later. We will still land 4 months before required to, there's no point rushing these things in my opinion.

Benj1980 my letter has come from PGCE University to state teaching days and course content etc but no student number or date. Should I get it resent with both?

Although we aren't heading out until late next Summer I would be grateful if anyone has any suggestions as to how I might secure a job before we go. We are planning for Perth! I am a secondary school teacher specialist subject Art and Design but also have ICT and RE. Can also offer Design & Tec and Home Economics :) Or should I just be realistic and accept the fact I'll be going out to relief work and hopefully securing a post when I'm out there??

Teachers here cannot get jobs. Suggestions are likely to get far worse. Oversubscribed in numbers coming through to qualify this year and unlikely to find work. Unless math or science teachers outrageous others are being accepted in the immigration stream.

Add design and technology teachers to maths and science, they are in huge demand.

Is this specific to a state or Australia in general??

The whole of Australia, Queensland in particular. There are many hundreds of teachers who remain unable to get teaching positions.

Maths, science and design and technology remain good though.

Ok I've missed a major factor here....do I need to do IELTS test before skills assessment??? Was being a little naive presuming as a British citizen I didn't need to! How do I go about this please??

If you are a British citizen and studied for your degree and teaching qualification in the UK you don't need to provide AITSL with your IELTS results. I only used IELTS to claim 20 points for migration and took it after I sent all of my AITSL paperwork away.

Hi,

Looking for a bit of advice from fellow teachers. I am waiting on a visa grant for a 189 under Early Childhood teacher. My family and I are looking to move over Summer 2016 (in time for new jobs being advertised for Jan 2017 start). My husband may have a job offer in Perth so that's where we will be headed. I have just completed my NQT and am on maternity leave. I really don't want to go back to my current school full time and have been told part time will not be an option. I don't want to start at a new school when I will be leaving in the summer and think I'll struggle to find a fixed term, part time contract.

This leaves supply work but will this make it difficult to prove to TRBWA how many years service I have? Will I find it harder to find a permanent position in Australia if I have done supply in the UK? If I were to do supply work in a private nursery/kindergarten would this count towards my years of service because in Australia there has to be a qualified Early years teacher employed by the nursery but that is not the case in the UK?

Thank you x

Very hard to get permanent positions other than in subjects as above and manual arts (not sure if this is the same as D&T but teacher hubby sometimes subs for these lessons) if you want to work in a major city. Having said that a real shortage of teachers in rural/remote and for anyone who fancies coming out and experiencing outback Australia this would be an excellent start to a teaching career, including getting that elusive permanency......

Hi, I got a positive AITSL result back today. I used an agent and they advised that an academic transcript with module by module scores would be required. The number of teaching days is very important. I was lucky to find certificate and academic transcript for PGCE but also needed letter from PGCE provider to confirm course content and number of teaching days. A letter from Uni for my first degree confirming that no module marks were now available and a copy degree certificate were sufficient. Both Unis were happy to provide paperwork required.

Now have 60 points an I'm submitting my EOI next week. Anyone need a physics or chemistry teacher on the Gold Coast ?

I think you'll be fine with physics and chemistry

In general I'm afraid by the sounds of it. I was amazed to read in The Australian yesterday some 40% from last qualifying period have yet to score jobs. I knew it was difficult, but hadn't realised just how.

The job market out here is extremely difficult. As a country Australia is producing a large volume of graduate teachers every year, my small sub-urban school of 800 pupils has had 60+ student teachers come in for placements just this year. There simply aren't enough jobs. My suggestion to those coming over is to sign up to an agency and start doing CRT work. English teachers are highly regarded here, but unfortunately many applications for jobs are not even looked at. So try to get your foot in the door with the school and hope a job becomes available.

People talk about how there's a shortage in maths and science teachers but I am yet to see evidence of it. From my time looking for jobs, I still receive job alerts via email and there are barely any jobs advertised. I also have friends who are in permanent jobs but happen to be applying for new schools and they say that there is nothing around. I think it's a myth that there's a shortage - in the Sydney area anyway.

The other problem is that many schools advertise but know that it is going to an internal candidate, wasting your time and efforts on an application - perhaps a casual that they like or someone on a temp block. I think the best bet is to try and get temp blocks with a school, impress and hope a job comes up.

No doubt wise advice. I think teachers from abroad need to fully understand the situation they are landing in.

Hiya, I sent off my AITSL application over two weeks ago and was wondering if anyone could tell me how long it takes for them to confirm receipt of the application.

Many thanks.

If my memory serves me correctly the standard processing time is 10 weeks from when they received your application. Hope this helps.
