Selina Smith
Sorry Benji1980, did you do a 3 year degree in business and a PGCE with ICT specialism and you had a positive assessment from AITSL? I have a 3 year degree in Animal studies and a PGCE in Early years. I know when it comes to registration in certain states I'll struggle that my degree wasn't education related but right now I'm more concerned with being able to get a visa to go over. Thank you x
benj1980
Yes 3+1. Make sure you have transcripts and certificates at the ready! Not sure if early years is different but if not you'll be fine :-)

teachingcouple
Well I just read through all 49 pages of this thread and wow is there a lot of information here. As I was going I copied and pasted out parts which I thought were helpful from other people's posts. This may be handy for other people so I'm sharing it here. Please note that none of this is from my own knowledge and experience and if anyone has any suggestions or corrections then I would be glad to know. I won't actually be starting my job hunt for a couple of years (at least) so this will hopefully help others in the mean time. Where to Find Jobs: Register with Hays, SEEK and SMART teachers SEEK: http://www.seek.com.au/education-training-jobs SMART: http://www.smartteachers.co.uk/workinaustralia HAYS: http://www.hays.com.au/jobs/education-jobs/ SMART teachers seem to have a good presence in QLD. It might be worth registering with the council of international schools as they are dotted across Australia. They are also holding their annual conference in Australia this year: http://www.cois.org/ Also the International Baccalaureate schools advertise on their own site: http://www.ibo.org/country/AU/ The Catholic Education have their own recruitment process and as they are unionised, their pay is more in line with state awards: http://www.ceomelb.catholic.edu.au/p...lic-education/ All of the adverts will ask you to address the Australian National Standards in your application. Now is the time to go to the website and familiarise yourself with the standards. http://www.aitsl.edu.au/australian-p...s-for-teachers CV TIPS Keep your cv short. 2 pages or so. Add a covering letter. Answer key selection criteria with examples of how you have met each criteria in your teaching. You need detail. 7 KSC may take 3 pages or so. Selection criteria applies in every state and each is different. For my present position I sent in five pages of selection criteria, plus a four page CV and a one page covering letter. Pretty standard for education. You also need to modify and change as time goes on, you can't just keep sending the same application in of course. In WA government positions demand that the selection criteria is addressed against the National Professional Standards for Teachers. So my advice there is to go on the website and familiarise yourself with the standards. All the jobs for the new school year are sorted by end of November July start. Aug-Nov is the main time, I would say Oct was the busiest time July and August is the main time. Doing this, I've received an interview for every job I've gone for in maths and science. Spent some time on the ACARA website. Worth a read. http://www.open.edu.au/careers/education-training/teachers-secondary-school STATE SPECIFIC INFORMATION Victoria state school system: http://www.education.vic.gov.au/hrweb/careers/pages/advacssch.aspx Queensland registration: http://www.qct.edu.au/registration/ Required: IELTS certificate - not 100% I needed it but I sent it. Degree Cert Degree Transcript PGCE Cert PGCE Transcript Passport References from schools I have worked in over the last 5 years Statement of service letters - basically guaranteeing I was employed. Registration is always provisional until you have completed a minimum of 200 days in a Queensland school. You then have do collate an evidence folder of how your teaching meets the professional standards. Then the school signs off on your full registration. I guess it is similar to a NQT year if you had to do one of those. I didn't do an NQT year so it was new to me. Easy to do, just a paperwork faff. This might be hard to do if you are a casual relief teacher but there is some advice on the QCT website on how to accumulate your evidence. Regards to teaching in QLD, it is really different here to most other places in regard to employment. You can't just apply for job vacancies as they are not advertised (only private schools) because it is all government based. The government have to interview you, give you a rating then they will offer you a permanent position somewhere where teachers are urgency needed - Regional or Far north Queensland. There is however a lot of Relief work available here. I have currently got 3 job share contracts and relieve the one day in-between. As far as permanency goes in state schools, it is a tricky now, but contract and relief if pretty good here- and pays well. :-) NSW: http://www.dec.nsw.gov.au/about-us/careers-centre/school-careers/teaching/our-programs-and-initiatives/overseas-trained-teachers/approval-process POMS IN OZ VISA TRACKER LINK: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/lv?key=0AkrdCphtU8u-dGJQSWROUlZ0bThIaUF2VW9zdUZmMlE&type=view&gid=277&f=true&sortcolid=-1&sortasc=true&rowsperpage=1000

wolvesaussie
Does anyone know how maternity leave works for teachers in Victoria. private schools? I am presuming it's really bad here Tony Abbott wanted to fix it but for some reason everyone seems to be against it. We are newly married and had planned wait a few months then start trying for baby. but I thought if we do that and have immediate success the new one will pop up during the main summer school holiday does this mean you would lose out? do they count the six weeks holidays out of your maternity leave? better off delaying so no chance of January baby? Skani
Does anyone know how maternity leave works for teachers in Victoria. private schools? It depends under which award your partner is working. This is the information for Catholic schools...a search will probably find the equivalent for the school of your partner if this is not the relevant one: http://www.ieuvictas.org.au/files/5314/0980/5723/ParentalLeave-Handbook_WEB_2014.pdf PS: Good luck with trying to plan a date...remember that babies can arrive a couple of months prematurely. milliem
Thanks Guys Survived my first week in the biggest Maths Science department in Queensland. It would an under statement to say it was hectic. High academic rigour and very high flying kids determined to excel who will keep me on my toes. Still terrified but very excited about the challenge. Selina Smith
Hi, Does anyone know if South Australia stipulate that your degree before PGCE has to be in Education when you apply for registration? I know this is the case for NSW and Queensland. thank you xx
wolvesaussie
Sounds a bit odd, I thought you only did a PGCE if your first degree WAS NOT in education... ie, 3 year science degree, + PGCE = Science Teacher, 3 year Maths degree + PGCE = Maths teacher. Ohsohappy
Hi giys, can anyone tell me if they have been able to secure sponsorship before they got their visa and if so did it save a lot of money? My husband is a Physics teacher with a PhD in Astrophysics and currently head of department he can get in on a 189 but we are a family of 5 and it's looking like £4500 so just trying to see if there is a cheaper way thanks guys
benj1980
It's not impossible but very difficult. You would be limited to private schools who can sponsor. There are of course limitations with the visa, so 189 is a better option particularly with a family. We are a family of 5, we have just accepted it won't be cheap to move!
Rachel Minton
Unfortunately the sponsorship process puts massive pressure on schools. This means many are very reluctant to enter into it and generally will only do so if you are already working there. There isn't a shortage of teachers out here so they are unwilling to put the time and funds in to sponsor teachers when there are enough here to fill the jobs. benj1980
Hi Rachel have you moved yet? Where are you planning to move?
Petals
Funny was talking to my daughter yesterday, she is a teacher but not teaching. Very difficult in Victoria for teachers, I really don't know why they are still importing teachers as we know so many Australian teachers who have graduated and cannot get jobs. They are churning them out these days but with the contract system, maternity leave and who you know its very difficult to get a foot in the door and getting permanent is icing on the cake. Fortunately for my son he is fine and is permanent teaching maths and science. However he tells me that its not so easy to even move school these days as everyone is hanging on to their positions. 12 month contracts are the norm now and the jobs that are advertised in th public sector are usually already filled. Just have to advertise the job. Private schools may be easier if you are a very good teacher with great skills in the classroom and the right degrees.
