I am burnt out after 10 years in the NHS and have this fantasy that nursing in Oz is more laid back and less stress. I would like to get an idea of what it is really like. I am coming to Oz for 3 weeks in Dec on honeymoon and really would like to get a sense of what Oz is like. My husband works in retail and I am led to believe that they're plenty of jobs in retail. Community services underdeveloped. Most 'therapy' is delivered by private psychologists/sychiatrists. a big percentage of nurses working in MH have no MH qualifications. Public hospitals are medically dominated and overwhelmed by drug induced psychosis and crisis management (often referred to as 'crowd control'). Private hospitals are even more medically controlled and are more about income than outcomes. Nurses have very little autonomy and most do not want any. You may be lucky and find somewhere a bit more progressive but you will have too look for it Ps. Its certainly less stress as nurses do very little..doctors and about 700 different managers run the show and nurses just quietly follow orders to over medicate..the nurses have little knowledge of mh and its hard to accept a much lesser role and limited practices...if you dont care about wrk then its good..you go to wrk, sit back and watch practices that r no longer allowed in the uk, dish out some meds and then go home..you may like doing nothing and not being involved..its very disease focused and they think way too much about physical health Hi all, I wonder if anyone could offer advice on mental health nursing in Oz. It was along process, very stressful (to the point of tears) and now I'm finally in Perth!! I have the most beautiful spot on swan river, to die for views and such a friendly house mate. The Australians are such friendly helpful peeps! Iv moved here from the UK completely on my own. I was scared of the flight and driving in Oz but both were straight forward. I'm now just waiting to finalise my nurse registration before commencing work here. Delaneym Posted December 2, 2013 Share Posted December 2, 2013 I have been working in mental health in nsw for 14 months. The nurses work very hard, harder than I ever did on a ward in hackney. It's very different there are plus and minuses for everything. Lots of nurses no mental health training but they have learnt a lot on the job and they are very skilled in physical health as an English trained nurse I may be way ahead in the knowledge of mental health but I hold my hat off to the psychical stuff required ... I have covered ED as a CNC, been a num 1 and 3 and my real job a CNE.. In uk I had 20 years in mental health ( including perinatal specialist etc) and left there from hackney as the borough lead for safeguarding children. Mental health here is not gor everyone and it's been a roller coaster time for sure but having just lodged my pr from a 457 I can honestly say I not ready to even think about returning to uk let alone NHS... X Hi Carly, if you are looking to move that includes school fees and medicare insurance etc, as an RN you should be able to apply for permanent residency visa, that would cover all of you with you being the main visa applicant. I would suggest you have a look on the Department of Immigration for Australia website as they have loads of info on visas and of course you need to work out the visa costs, (all info on that website) if you are worried about the process it might be worth calling a registered migration agent, I did that (we used Immigration 2 OZ) it was costly but in my view worth every penny as John Adams and the team are superb and really made it seem easy for us. I'm a practice develepment nurse currently in Blackpool, because I turned 40 last Jan I needed more points for our PR visa which I gained thankfully from my IELTS exam result...you'll have to complete the academic IELTS exam to register with AHPRA and for your ANMAC assessment process if you decide on PR. There are other visa choices however as I mentioned unless you go for permanent residency you might need to pay for school fees and medical insurance? I know that they are looking for PEADIATRIC nurses constantly in the Brisbane area because thats where we are moving to and I often see peadiatric positions advertised. We are making the magic move in June (after our daughters GCSE's ...30th to be precise :laugh: and are very excited!! Its really starting to sink in now, for us all! Were using the same agent as you Samdom1, how did they manage it for you? also, anyone got any idea what the job prospects are for a gynae nurse in NSW, anyone heard if there are health cuts affecting recruitment? samdom1 Posted January 12, 2014 Share Posted January 12, 2014 Hi mirmai John and the team our immigration agents didnt arrange Ahpra i needed to do that myself. I did ask that the nmc sent the registration docs directly onto Ahpra but that didnt happen! So i had to call the international section of the nmc again and they resent the docs to Ahpra. I then just filled in the application form and got all my evidence signed by a magistrate at the local court (the signature and the magistrates role) on each doc is vital otherwise they will send it all back and put you at the back of the queue! This happened to me which meant the process took me 4 and a half months! So be sure your c.v is as they ask on the website and also your application and youll be fine! Re gynae jobs...not sure about that speciality but there seems to be lots of registered nurse and clinical nurse posts. Have a look at brisbane womens hospital perhaps they have a casual pool? I want to move to Melbourne, but I heard Adelaide´s branch is faster. The question is If I send my application to Adelaide I need to present personally in Adelaide or is it possible to go to Melbourne to complete my registration? and an extra question the time they give to present yourself in person in Ahpra to complete the registration is 12 months, isnt it?
