How successful have people been applying for jobs from the UK before leaving for OZ?

Hello

We are just wondering how successful people are getting jobs while still in the UK before even getting to OZ? And how far in advance did you start applying?

We are hoping to be there end of January.

Family are saying we should have started applying ages ago.

My husband who is in IT and does recruiting himself, believes companies want you there in the flesh and won't look at CV's 4 months away.

Just wondered what the general opinion was please.

And if you did start looking before hand, did you just go through lots of agencies?

Thanks very much

I have applied for about 10 vacancies but have only received 4 replies and all negative, I was told by someone in my business in TAS not to bother until you have a definite arrival date and even then only maximum 4-6 weeks before.

I honestly think that I will now wait and physically walk into various companies and see what they say.

Are these family members in Oz or the UK ?

My family and friends are always saying :

Have you got a job there yet? No, it's not really possible unless you are being sponsored by an employer (not me !)

When are you leaving ? Don't know until the house is sold and I have handed my notice in to find out how long I have to still work here !

Get used to repeated frustrating questions from those around you, it comes with the visa !

Anyway good luck and if I can help once we are there just ask !

I think your husband is right. When companies recruit it I because they have a position to fill, not because they think they will have one in four months.

Great post. Were in the same boat, family of 4 hoping to move over on the husbands visa. We were told all we could get would be a company sponsored visa

( 457 i think) but to be honest nobody will hire him until he gets there. It's a catch 22. Cant get sponsorship to get there and can't get there without sponsorship. The DH is in IT also but not very high up in the chain so not really the type a company would spend the money on sponsoring really. I'll keep looking to see if there is any other way to get there and find a winning lotto ticket in the mean time.

  • 3 weeks later...

Very much in the same situation, have registered and have applied for many jobs and have had positive responses in very much wait until you arrive. So with that in mind and the move date is getting close, will continue to apply and ensure my resume reflects that date. So dont give up keep trying...

I have applied for jobs while waiting for my partner's visa to be approved. However I but have been told by recruitment agencies not to bother until I arrive in Oz and then to make an appointment to see them.

We both had jobs to come to on an independent skilled PR visa ... but this was in 2007 and things may be different now. I'm a nurse - looked up hospitals in Perth and used the 'contact us' facility - sent off an covering letter and my CV. Now I would suggest nurses look on Seek.com or jobs WA - lots of nursing positions are advertised on there.

My hubby applied for a job on seek but they wanted someone to start right away, however, they said they liked his CV and would keep it on file. A few months later, they emailed him about a vacancy and asked about visa/when we were moving etc. The did a telephone interview and he got offered the job.

My husband got two job offers of sponsorship (I know, very fortunate) but it is in a specialised field, and the employer had been advertising in Australia prior to going International, with no luck.

I didn't look until we got out here, but was able to pick up work within six weeks from the same employer - we became a bit of a 'buy one, get one free' deal!

For more general (unspecialised) work it seems to be a lot easier to get interest if you are here, and the employer can see you, talk to you in person, and - quite crucially - know they do not have to jump through any immigration hoops that may incur them expense. The other thing we have heard, is that people say they are going to come, and then don't, leaving the company possibly out of pocket, and with no employee to fill the gap they have.

As has been said, it very much depends on what sort of job you do. My husband and I were applying for PR and he sent off a few CVs to various companies (he's a structural engineer) on the chance that we might get sponsorship. He heard nothing back for a couple of months and then out of the blue a company called him, interviewed him and we were here 6 weeks later! Once that had happened another 2 companies called but he had already accepted the original position.

It's a risk for a company to bring a family over if they have never met you, so it's understandable that many are reluctant to shell out to do so. However, some industries are crying our for suitable people to fill roles so you never know. Good luck!

I (mechanical engineer) found a job whilst still in the UK and had contracts signed and exchanged over a month before we flew. I had a few other companies say they wanted to interview me upon arrival but in the end that wasnt' necessary.

Reecruitment agents wont talk to you when you're still in the UK - Do the homework yourself and email companies directly. Thats what I did and it worked well.

when I went to NZ i got a job before I left. However, if you see a post that your visa will not affect and you can just leave with no consequences, should it be total crap then apply. When I went to Oz I totally avoided applying for jobs, until I was just a few weeks away from moving.

However, I am in nursing and LOT and LOTS of people aplly months before they get there.

Back in 2007 I arranged 3 interviews as a Fitter during a holiday visit, i got shown round by all the bosses the suburbs also as well as round plant. I got offered all 3 jobs, one right after the interview had the contract on the table desperate for me to sign. The job i took, the best paid one I am still there, my hourly rate back then was $26 an hour, minimum pay rise i had has been 4% which is the trend in Brisbane, 4% pay rise is standard pretty much as far as I am aware, certainly in food manufacture. This year the maintenance department set up an enterprise bargaining agreement, got the union involved and my rate jumped from $30 an hour to $41 an hour as we have been moved to a roster. I was working 60 hours a week mon to fri and sat as overtime. Because of our big pay rise our overtime has been stopped so take home same as on 60 hour week which was too much hours anyway. Now every 3 weeks i get a 5 day weekend which i enjoy. My brother is a business systems architect he moved to sydney and in UK he was on 40k in uk and in sydney hes earning triple his uk salary or thereabouts earning around $180k.

I remember having same problem, tell them you are visiting australia and would like to arrange an interview during your visit. As soon as i did that the floodgates opened for me. Thing is applying for job in australia they need to know you are serious. Tell them you are making a visit shows you are serious. Putting your money where your mouth is.

Emailed on spec with CV, 2 long phone interviews, offered job, accepted, my OH did the same, skype interviews, offered and accepted, both employers waited 3 months as that was the notice my OH had to work when she resigned her UK job, recruitment process here is slower than UK, If you want to try and get a job before you come start now, good luck

Applied for a job. Got a phone call back saying they weren't looking at foreign candidates. Week later, call back again asking if I was still interested as they couldn't find anyone who matched my skill set.

Two interviews via Skype and the job was mine.

Just waiting on the 457 to go through and I'm away.
