Why is Perth so Boring, Expensive?

Taxis are actually not bad tbh Stacey I think cheaper than UK...

good news for me! other option would of been sleeping on a park bench  one of the things i like the sound of about perth is that it seems like it has a really good transport system - late trains and buses. Dont think i'd be using them very often but at least the options there! wouldnt be hard to beat the transport where i live tho and the taxis are a rip off

That's because petrol is MILES cheaper in Oz than the UK

Some people don't see the full picture, they will complain about the price of a pint, but never say they are filling the car up at less than £1 per litre

You're not wrong there Stevie. Swings and roundabouts mate....swings and roundabouts....it's no more expensive than the UK overall (disclaimer.... IMO!)

TBH if I was by myself and needed to travel in a taxi I would be very worried....the stuff I hear about taxi drivers here is shocking....some asking for sexual favours instead of the fare...I know it's not all drivers.

i think its swings and roundabouts most of the time. also think a lot of people forget that things are increasing here too - not so much on this forum but ive noticed it on other ones mainly BE. People going on about "this was cheaper in the uk" Its as if they think prices have stayed the same here since they left the uk - they havent and a lot of people are struggling on minimum wage or just a bit better than that.

Hehehe i sound like the Hoff, may aswell take over since hes on holiday

I would'nt get a Taxi on my own in Perth, never did it in my younger years and won't do it know, most people I know well girls would'nt do it either, we usually have someone who does'nt drink or only has a couple and we all go together in one car, if we have to get a taxi it would probably be about $80 to $90 after dropping us all off at our houses, the would be from the Casino or the Northbridge.

No I don't like taxi travel either...theres always someone last to be dropped off though. I guess if youre uneasy the last 2 get out together. My hubby used to hate me getting taxis in UK..here he tends to pick me up...

Only ever pay $2 for 2 litres in Brisbane unless we buy in a small shop. You can buy different brands dearer in the supermarket but not that much unless it is soy latte mocca organic hand churned milk :)

No am not personally calling you an idiot but the only reason why you pay $11.50 a pint is because the establishments ask and people are silly enough to pay. These places are laughing behind you back while gouging you with an Idiot tax.

Even in Sydney CBD in a normal Irish pub (not an RSL) a pint of Kilkenny should not set you back more than $8 which I consider expensive.

http://www.pjobriens.com.au/sydney/menus/drink/

There's 88 pints per keg so thats a rort of $308 per keg, maybe it down to transport costs but my feeling is that the establishments charge that because people are stupid enough to pay it.

If everyone refused to pay $11.50 and just pay $8 the establishments would have no other option but accept it, it's the same country FFS they are just using the mining boom to take the piss out of people (and an extra $3.50 per pint it seems)

It is taking the pee out of folk but what to do in such an individualistic society? I have certainly noticed over the past five years how as resonably well paid colleagues psychologists and those in related areas look for the cheaper options when going out . Seven years back this was not an issue.

same here really, i dont even drink much milk really, mostly just for my cereal. dave goes through it a lot and cheese! cheese addict!

i just looked and it costs £15.50 to get into the zoo in edinburgh so not really a cheap day out if you have a big family here when you include petrol and food

I think you put them up to it in the hope of reducing the number of people who move there. Quite honestly the only place I hear people criticising Perth is on here. I have relatives and friends who live there and love it.

I was telling my uncle about some of the comments I read on here - particularly the Perth is boring an expensive ones - his response was that they must be written by boring poor people

I can assure you I an neither poor or boring and most the folk I associate with are in professions and mixed between Aussies and others though few Poms....and even those on considerable salaries have in general the same opinion that Perth is a rip off........

£15.50 x 2.2 = $34

Our local zoo's = $33 and the other $37

Swings and roundabouts :)

$22.50 to get into Perth Zoo

Also, Coles Perth, $2 for 2L of milk

thats what i thought too, £15.50 here and 11.50 for under 15's for edinburgh zoo. i wonder if the price has went up cos of those pandas, they must of made a fortune. im sure i heard someone say they were having a birthday party for them lol.

we dont go places like that much but when we took daves nephew places it always ends up a expensive day

My eldest wants to be a psychologist and my youngest a vet, professions which could take them anywhere. My youngest is a triple citizen so the world is truly her oyster. As for feeling stranded, I know I won't feel like that as I have brought my children up to be resilient, confident individuals and they will feel comfortable and have no guilt doing what they please (or going where they please) when they are older. Close knit families struggle obviously, I have often read of mothers who say they won't be able to manage bringing up their kids without the support of their families. I am thankfully not one of those women.

With hindsight and we have lived in Canada, US and here with short stints in Norway and Holland, the hardest move I ever made was the move to London in our little Peugeot 205 diesel with 2 suitcases!! Moving overseas was a walk in the park after that!

It's a little like losing one's virginity. First time it's a big deal....but gets easier each time after that......psychology is a very over subscribed study these days......hope your eldest expectations matches the reality....

It also depends how much you drink too...every time I go out in Perth or Leederville/Joondalup I've never spent more than $50 I used to take 30 pounds for a night out in the UK.

$50 dollars for a night out in Perth...lol.....where did you go fiona? The local takeaway.

The best value over here in Brisbane is entry to 3 large theme parks (Movie World, Sea World and Wet 'n Wild) for the salary equivalent of 45 pounds for the WHOLE YEAR ($99).

A lot of local families buy them and take the kids over and over: http://myfun.com.au/vip-pass.aspx?WT.mc_id=MyFun;Homepage;VIPS-Wanted

Plus if you buy 3 annual passes they give you another one free...

No getting away from it, some people love it....but the facts are...some don't, views from both sides are best...agree?

It goes deeper than liking and not liking. It is about how a whole way of living has been turned on its head in such a short period of time. It's about a change of the ethos of the place from being fairly inclusive to increasingly exclusive.

would you not consider moving? at the end of the day its not nice seeing somewhere going downhill (in some peoples opinion) but you have to make a choice wether to do something about it (if you can) or put up with it or leave for somewhere else. not meaning that to sound rude tho!
