All the good things about living in Perth

I could go on about the weather, the scenery, the fact you can sit out on a winter's afternoon, the open spaces...

BUT most of all....

The kindness of people here continues to surprise me. Most recent incident occurred after spending most of Friday at work complaining about being cold in the evenings. Without any warning, I had a text message from my boss on Saturday - he'd dropped a gas heater round to my house and just wanted to let me know it was out the front.

We are in Perth at the moment. I imagine (and this is only from what i've heard and read, as we haven't made the east coast yet) that Perth is like the California of Australia. I think Perth is about the weather, the beaches, the outdoor lifestyle, having the weather to keep fit in what ever way takes your fancy, socialising, eating out, and generally chilling.

We are here on a 2 year secondment, so for us this is a 2 year chill out, and is exactly what we expected Australia to be. As far as Perth city is concerned, I'm not particularly a city lover, but like the feel of Perth, I think it's reasonably compact and the centre is easy to get about. I think that probably Sydney, Melbourne etc perhaps have more of a buzz, and probably more choice (of just about everything) the only downside to Perth for us is the cost, and I think this is a view shared by many, but for the time being we are happy to be here!

Wow, you are lucky! I think I'd faint with shock if my boss did something as nice as that!! I think I might have been unlucky on the employer front though, job 1 - everyone lovely, so very nice. job 2 - no-body spoke to me for nearly 3 months, it was as if I didn't exist! Which was interesting seeing as though the office only had 12 people in! So not all aussies are the warm and welcoming type...

My OH's boss did exactly the same, although we only scored an electric fan heater, so obviously my OH's boss doesnt like him as much as your boss likes you :biglaugh:

My first boss lent us his 4 wheel drive when we were moving out of our rental and the landlord and landlady helped us pack all our belongings in the removal van.

Best of all though was I went for my first interview for a job and not knowing Perth that well jumped on a bus that I thought would take me to where our rental was. Went close then turned down a road I didn't recognise, then went another couple of stops and it became clear that it wasn't heading in the right direction at all. Went to ask the driver where to get off and when he found out where I wanted to get to he told me to stay on as he was heading back to the bus station in Perth and would drop me off. He took me right to the house, not even the closest bus stop. Couldn't believe it. Got the usual "no worries mate" when I thanked him.

When I was in Australia travelling a couple of years ago, Perth was one of my favourite places in Australia.

A very clean city, great weather and beaches, the people were friendly, loved Fremantle and spending time in the city and down on the river.

I am hoping to emigrate over to Oz in the future and based on my experience of Perth, it will be where I want to move!

Just got to start the ball rolling now and hope I am eligible for a visa!!!

Ok we don't "love" Perth, but it's a nice place to be for us at the moment!

Just got back from a weekend in Dwellingup - 103km south of Perth, was a gorgeous weekend walking in Lane Poole Reserve, getting back to nature and staying somewhere with a log fire, kangaroos hopping around outside, tame enough to come up to you for a pet and a stroke.

We like off-roading, so many places to see off the beaten track outside of Perth! Mundering Power Lines track, Lancelin, Ledge Point, Wedge Island, Cervantes.

Jurien Bay to swim with the sea-lions - EPIC, everyone should do this!

Adventure World, Penguin Island, Perth Zoo, Rottnest Island, Margaret River, Augusta Whale Watching (doing this next weekend!), Fremantle Prison, Little Creatures, Natural History Museum, Northbridge, Yanchep Lagoon, Whitman Park, Caversham Wildlife Park.

Yes the climate is nice - pretty chilly today though don't you think?! Roll on Summer!

Yep very nice down south. Perth though does have its limitations.

Perth enjoys a reputation of being a clean, modern city with great facilities in a beautiful part of the world..all this and more

Without the benefit of having visited other states to compare I think that Perth is a great place to live....it is diverse, far more to it than the suburban sprawl, country, city or beachside lifestyles are all possible within easy reach of the city so there really is something for everyone....Perth has culture and history....museums galore, galleries, cafe culture, big city...or should I say smallish city amenities....a brand new arena right in the middle of town, several hip little towns close to the city where all the trendy people live....a strong beach life culture in the coastal burbs...you do see bronzed surfer dudes biking down to the beach topless with a board on their back! Its quite a relaxed vibe wherever you go...

There is a selection of quality restaurants with a price tag to match, lots of cool little places to eat in the burbs...strong European influences with pockets of Italian, Greek and Polish shops and restaurants, lots of Asian influences too...Koreans and Vietnamese...markets selling authentic food....fab smells...

The Swan Valley, foodie and wino heaven, great breweries and vineyards....tourist attractions, etc

Further north of Perth is the surburban sprawl which extends South too..lots of poms make for these value suburbs but youll find plenty of locals too.....everywhere is pretty easy to get around. Public transport is good, free city travel within Perth cbd and Joondalup cbd which is not a city as such more of a town but has everything the city has on a much smaller scale....

Sporting facilities are good....surf clubs, soccer, afl, tennis, whatever you like...lots of walk trails in the regional parks, different scenery every day if you like, a coastal walk, a bush walk, a lake walk, a riverside walk...speaking of the river...the spectacular Swan is magnificent and the Canning an awesome sight too....an oval or green space in every single suburb, larger burbs have several....

Kings Park, amazing, massive and still havent seen it all...native plants and trees a plenty...different scenery according to the season too...lots of spring wildflowers...autumnal changes, the leaves go red and orange and make for some beautiful tree lined avenue picture opportunities...in the summer everywhere is brown and scorched in the winter the rivers and lakes fill up and everywhere turns magically green almost overnight after the first rains!

Theres an awful lot to love about Perth and thats just the metro area...venture further afield in WA and its another thread entirely!!

I think Perth needs to be looked at with a wide stroke of the brush. The usual things being raised here, good beaches, weather, place for the kiddies.....perhaps the rather limited responses is suggestive to the nature of the place.

Lol .. some of us were at work

Takes a woman's touch to explain all the arty stuff. Very nicely done, agree with all that.

We moved here from Canada in May (orginally) from the UK and love, love, love it here....the people ar very friendly and the place is clean, tidy and above all, WARM in the winter :)

The evenings are cold but a few jumpers and all is good. The beaches are amazing and the parks have free BBQ's to use which are not broken with graffiti all over them.

It is expensive here mind you but the wages are better!

We just keep asking ourselves why we didnt do this 5 years ago! If you like the outdoor lifestyle, the Perth if defo for you!!!

Dolphins swimming round my daughter when she's having a surfing lesson. (though the first sight of that fin nearly gave me a heart attack!!)

Outdoor cinema at Kings Park.

The most gorgeous breakfasts, with so many fab cafes to choose from.

Shopping ( I lived in an armpit country in the ME for 5 years, trust me the shopping here is fab).

Great schools with enthusiastic teachers.

Lovely landlord (I know that one maybe a bit rarer).

beautiful beaches where I can wear my shorts...or even a bikini (again armpit ME)

Freo markets and Little Creatures

People smiling and say "Morning" when you walk past them when we're out for our Saturday morning stroll around the lake.

Margaret River.

Needless to say we are loving it here!!
